"Free men name themselves": Cape Verdeans in Massachusetts negotiate race, 1900-1980

This project is about what it has meant to be "black" in twentieth century New England for immigrants from the African Diaspora. In this study, I document the experiences of Cape Verdeans in Massachusetts with brief comparative references to Caribbean immigrants. Specifically, their notions of identity and responses to US socio-cultural beliefs regarding race and immigration are examined during the period 1900-1980. I argue that the consistent choice of most Cape Verdean immigrants to reject the US racial binary by defining themselves as exactly "Cape Verdean" versus "black" or "white" represented a form of strategic resistance--both informal and organized--to both the colonial forces in their homeland and the racist and nativist impulses in their new home abroad. Their choices stood in sharp contrast to the overwhelmingly popular choice of most Caribbeans who for the most part adhered to the Garvey-inspired Black Nationalist strategies of racial protest reflecting differences in the two sets of immigrants' colonial pasts and ideological influences. Practical differences in terms of class, language, phenotype, literacy and culture--i.e. religion also helped shape these foreigners' responses and their attendant identity politics. The dissertation is grounded in traditional African-American history and historiographical arguments as well as African Diaspora theory. As members of overlapping diasporas, Cape Verdean immigrants' inability to choose either one identity or another stemmed from the fact that their heritage reflected a mlange of influences, both African and European, simultaneously interacting in the form of multiple, interlocked subjectivities. Within the realm of these overlapping diasporas, the construct of race was not the penultimate marker of one's identity; rather, in keeping with African tradition, one's identity was shaped more by family name or clan. The varied choices made by Cape Verdean and Caribbean immigrants regarding racial affiliation reflects the diversity of experiences in the African Diaspora and within the so-called "black" population of the United States. Thus telling this history represents a challenge to African-American essentialism and pushes the boundaries of African-American history to include little known ethnic groups of people of African descent like the Cape Verdeans of the New England region.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 148-158)by Aminah Nailah Pilgri

This research focuses on analyzing Nailah Dean’s opinion to reveal the existence of controversy regarding the Muslim marriage crisis. The Muslim marriage crisis is a phenomenon of discrimination against Muslims in marriage. In her opinion, Nailah explains that this discrimination is often carried out by fellow Muslims themselves, which is a factor that has sparked debate, especially against Muslim women. This research identifies a three-dimensional analysis of text, social cognition, and social context from Nailah Dean's opinions on websites and the results of interviews with Nailah Dean via email. It is essential to recognize how Nailah Dean’s position as a Black American woman experiencing marital discrimination influenced her language and perspective. The theory of this research is Critical Discourse Analysis by Teun A. van Dijk. The data used is in the form of transcripts of opinion texts and the results of email interviews with Nailah Dean, which are then analyzed using the three dimensions, social cognition, and social context of Teun A. van Dijk’s model. Other supporting data from internet sources and comments on Nailah Dean's Instagram were added to strengthen the findings. The results of this research show that the phenomenon of the Muslim marriage crisis was born from the discrimination faced by Nailah Dean and other Muslim women due to societal stigma. In addition, Nailah Dean’s use of language shows that she is voicing Muslim women’s rights in marriage so that the public can use it to understand the phenomenon of the Muslim marriage crisis. Then, the social context reveals power relations, namely that many Muslim women face the same problems in marriage, such as racism, sexism, ageism, and ableism. Nailah Dean’s statement can be said to be a form of resistance to this phenomenon and aims to eliminate the Muslim marriage crisis

Automatic Room Power Control / Nailah Amirudin

Have you ever thought is there a person in your room? Occasionally, people build a circuit for 'Automatic Room Power Control’ only got one light sensor. This when the person get into the room the lights will become ‘on’ and when the person leave the room the light becomes ‘off. But what happen if two persons get into the room at the same time. This is certainly will remains the lights ‘off all the time. So, to overcome this problem we have made a circuit that will ‘on’ and ‘off the lights according to it desired fashion. This is where it used two light diode resistors (LDR) This placed one after another so that it will separately sense a person getting into the room or coming out of the room. This circuit has a small memory which enables it to automatically switch ‘on’ and switch ‘off the lights to it desired fashion. Output of two LED , after it has been processes, are used with bi-colour LED so that when a person getting into a room it emits green light and when the person coming out of the room it emits red light. It is then applied to two decade counter. This is where when persons getting into a room, one of the counters will count upwards. While the other counter will count downwards. The next stage comprises two logic ICs which combine the outputs of the two decade counters and determine if there are still persons left the room or not. This circuit has a maximum number of persons that are limited to four since it reset on the fifth clock pulse using the counters. It used up to +9V power supply.

Cybercrime / Wan Nailah Abdullah and Roshima Said

Cybercrime has been an issue which impacts the lives of many people around the world. Cybercrime is a crime which, a) is directed at computers or other devices (for instance, computer hacking), and b) where computers or other devices are integral to the offence (for instance, identity theft, online fraud, and the distribution of child exploitation material) (Australian Cyber Security Centre, 2016). Some of the most typical types of cybercrime include online scams and fraud, hacking, identity theft, attacks on computer systems, as well as prohibited and illegal online content. Cybercrime is illegal because its effects can be extremely upsetting for victims, and may go way beyond merely being due to financial reasons. The crime may cause its victims to find themselves being powerless as the result of their privacy being violated. As the modern economic reliance on technology grows, the cost and incidence of cybercrime is expected to increase in many parts of the world

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Determinants of dividend policy towards financial sector listed in Bursa Malaysia/ Nailah Aziz

The return on investment can be divided in capital gain and dividend payout. It is a difficult task to a management to allocate a sufficient amount in both segments especially to prevent from agency or management problem. The firms pay dividends only when they meet their requirement and short term needs. Besides, dividend shows the level of condition of a firm in term of management and profitability. It reflects their credibility and image. Each shareholders hope for a high dividend payout in return to their investment and they will find the best firm in order to earn more income or profits. However, this study is aims to investigate the determinants of dividend policy towards financial sector listed in Bursa Malaysia. The factors examined in this study include firm size (log of total asset), debt, sales growth (operating profit margin), investment opportunity (INV) and return on equity (ROE). In broad, this study a total of 10 financial sector companies listed in Bursa Malaysia had been selected randomly. Panel data of period of year from 2006 until 2015 of selected financial sector companies had been used to measure the data. The results revealed the four factors that are TA, Debt and ROE have a positive significant influence on dividend per share while OPM and INV have a negative significant effect
