Teaching Cultural Differences through Korean Canadians: Teaching Material Development for English as a Foreign Language Classes

    No full text
Introduction: Students of English as a foreign language must possess intercultural communicative skills in order to be able to interpret and discuss the cultural diversity that surrounds them when they use English for communicational purposes. This paper claims, and is based on the conviction, that the development of these skills takes place primarily through teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in most educational contexts. This approach is facilitated by the fact that the English language functions as the most widely used foreign language in the context of culture teaching. Methods: Based on these considerations and with a view to theoretical and practical aspects concerning teaching material development, the presented study discusses some fundamental concepts associated with the relationship between teaching EFL, teaching cultural information and developing students’ intercultural skills. After reviewing potential theories, it adopts Byram’s (1997, 2008) Intercultural Communicative Competence model as a theoretical foundation for creating teaching materials for the purpose of developing students’ intercultural communicative skills. Results: The study presents the results of this endeavour through the example of author-designed worksheets focusing on Canadian content, and analyses a worksheet that covers Korean immigrant culture in Canada in order to demonstrate, with the help of this example, how theoretical considerations can be put into practice in the scope of developing teaching materials with Canadian content focusing on the development of intercultural communicative skills. Discussion: Within the scope of English as a foreign language, Byram’s (1997, 2008) Intercultural Communicative Competence model proves a very practical model to be used for the purpose of designing worksheets that develop students’ intercultural communicative skills: this is proved on the basis of the analysis of the above-mentioned worksheet. It is also demonstrated that teaching intercultural communicative skills through Canadian contents is a feasible and practicable way of introducing students to the concept of interculturality through the cultural heritage of an English-speaking country. Limitations: The theoretical background and the teaching material development project described below can serve as a potential model for designing similar worksheets, but the actual use and efficiency of this and similar worksheets depends on the applicable national curriculum and the specificities (primarily the language and motivational levels) of the class where such materials are intended for use. This also means that some aspects of the project are worth reconsidering when one intends to design their own teaching materials. Conclusion: For the design of worksheets developing intercultural communicative skills, this study provides a tried and tested methodological model to follow and presents a worksheet that can function as a potential model. In addition, this paper hopes to generate further research in the field of developing teaching materials focusing either on the development of intercultural communicative skills or on Canadian culture, and, through setting an example, it encourages the creation of worksheets of a comparable design or topic

Az értekezés célja a Jászapátin élő roma és magyar kultúrában élő kisiskolások pragmatikai kompetenciájának feltérképezése, mellyel segíteni szeretném az alsó tagozatos pedagógusok munkáját. A szociopragmatikai vizsgálódások során arra voltam kíváncsi, hogy egy bizonyos közösség tagjai (szociolingvisztika) milyen nyelvi eszközökkel érik el céljaikat (pragmalingvisztika), és a célok mögött milyen kulturális világszemlélet húzódik (szociopragmatika). A szóbeli nyelvhasználat elemzése során a személyközi kapcsolatok alakítására koncentráltam a két kultúra viszonylatában. Elméleti keretül a kapcsolatkezelés („rapport management”) elméleti keretét választottam Spencer-Oatey-tól (2000), hiszen e szociopragmatikai megközelítésű modell alapján lehetővé vált a kultúraközi elemzés is. A kisiskoláskorban alkalmazott kapcsolatkezelési stratégiákat szerepjátszós módszerrel hívtam elő. A fenti kérdéseken kívül a nyelvhasználat diskurzusjellegzetességeire is kíváncsi voltam, ezért egy másik fejezetben a konverzációban való részvétel során a következő jellegzetességeket vizsgáltam (Cheng 2003): 1. A preferenciaszerveződés az egyet nem értés kapcsán 2. A szimultán beszéd 3. A diskurzus témájának kezelése, alakítása 4. A diskurzus információs struktúrája. A tantárgyi követelményekben olvashatjuk azonban a párbeszédek használatának fontosságát a szöveg élményszerűvé tétele céljából. The aim of my dissertation is to map the pragmatic competence of Roma and Hungarian primary school children living in Jászapáti, with which I would like to help teachers in primary education. During the sociopragmatic investigation, I was interested in what linguistic tools (pragmalinguistics) are used by members of a certain community (sociolinguistics) to reach their goals and what cultural world view lies behind the goals. In the course of the analysis of oral language usage I concentrated on the development of interpersonal relationship between the two cultures. As a theoretical framework I chose Spencer-Oatey’s (2000) rapport management, since this sociopragmatic approach gives an overall view to the investigation of the interaction functions of the discourse. Most of all, this model made the intercultural analysis possible as well. I evoked the social interactional strategies among elementary school children with role-play method. During my research among elementary school children, I decided to investigate a group consisting of 30 students. Out of the group, there were 15 Roma language speaking, 15 Hungarian language speaking first grade students. During the research, each student had to participate in 15 situations all together, depending on which social norm was violated. The dialogues created with the role-play situations were suitable to recall strategies from children that were acquired during the socialization process. I managed to identify the world view behind the strategy choice with follow-up questions. Investigating the strategies of social interactions among Roma and Hungarian children, we can draw a conclusion that after violating a maxim they care about face saving the most, from the sociopragmatic principles. Roma children’s strategy choice concentrated mostly on the self-face saving, on the other hand, in case of Hungarians the partner and other expectations also played major role. Besides this fact, we also concluded that Hungarian’s polite language usage are indicated with IFID-strategies (expressing shame, expressing sorrow, asking for forgiveness, apologizing), in the case of Roma’s, the subcategories of category 2. (confessing the fault, refusing to confess the fault, admitting self-mistake, recognizing that the partner deserves apology, lack of deliberate action, refusing responsibility) indicate it. It is also a very important remark that Hungarians used many and more complex strategies with teachers and parents, on the other hand, Romas used them in the interaction with friends. Besides that, Roma children applied -2 (refusing responsibility), -2.a (refusing to confess the fault), 6 (expressing perplexity) and 9 (distraction, avoiding responsibility) strategies more frequently with teachers; the strategies they consider a bad solution for apologizing. In the investigation of developing pragmatic competence, I found out that children by fourth grade apply more and more complete strategies to maintain their social relations. By the age of ten, they prefer to use responsibility transforming strategies. Besides the previous questions I was also interested in the discourse patterns of language usage as well, so in another chapter I investigated the following patterns in conversations (Cheng 2003): 1. preference organization in connection with disagreements 2. simultaneous talk 3. managing, shaping the topic of discourse 4. discourse information structure. Apart from the role-play method, discourse analysis required authentic conversations. In the research, we sit two elementary school students together who were given preliminary instructions to plan the last day at school. All together, 20 elementary school students from Jászapáti participated in 2-2 situations (with a partner from identical and different cultural background). To reveal the sociopragmatic conventions and to investigate attitude, I created a questionnaire which was filled out by the children after the conversation. In the investigation of disagreement I found out that Hungarians tend to disagree with Romas more often and they frequently flout the maxim of politeness . The investigation of simultaneous talk proved that Hungarians tend to skip the maxim of politeness, in case of Romas the maxim of approval dominates. Hungarians were more frequently the originators of simultaneous talk. Comparing to the Romas, Hungarians more frequently kept the turn. As the topic handling, I assumed that the function of language usage in Hungarians, when planning the last day, was information exchange. But in Romas, the function of language usage was mostly interpersonal interaction. In the investigation of discourse patters, it turned out that Romas prefer indirect strategies, for example argument and teasing. Beyond the differences in oral language usage I also searched an answer, why do Roma children have difficulties in literacy. I started my research by separating oral and written criteria. After that I investigated traces of logical patterns about sentence structure and addressee in elementary school children’s compositions on the basis of theoretical background (mostly Kernya). As a starting point from the typical characteristics of a narrative genre, I used Labov and Waletzky’s (1967) variation theory as a frame to find a global cohesion in the texts, as well as the link among narrative sentences in compositions. I gave instructions to 4th grade students (24 Hungarian and 24 Roma) to write a narrative composition to a teacher who does not teach in their class, with the title of “I had a great experience”. I did not determine the topic, only the genre: it should be a narrative composition. After analyzing the compositions of elementary school children, we can draw a conclusion that the expected linear and global cohesion patterns in compositions do not succeed properly. Although, in the subject requirements the importance of using discourses to make the text more life-like is highlighted. It seems that the reason why Roma story telling is more interesting for the reader is that they use oral language strategies during text creation. After reviewing the differences in language usage I would like to give some suggestions about how the results may be implemented in the curriculum, in the last chapter. As my thesis is about a linguistic subject, I only touch upon the practical implementations

    Y. K. Choi’s recent novel, Kay’s Lucky Coin Variety (2016) contains ample references to the differences between Western and Eastern ways of courtship, romance and marriage. Applying Kim Min-Sun’s cultural communication theory to the analysis as described in her book entitled Non-Western Perspectives on Human Communication (2002), the paper will explore how the diasporic Korean-Canadian female protagonist, Yu-Rhee/ Mary’s ideas and experience of male-female relationships are affected by her Korean cultural heritage and the Canadian environment in which she grows up

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
