Complementary and alternative medicine use among pediatric patients with leukemia: The case of Lebanon
Background: International evidence indicates that caretakers of pediatric leukemia patients are increasingly using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies. Such a trend has never been substantiated in the Arab world. Objective: Examine the frequency, types, modes, and reasons of CAM use among pediatric leukemia patients in Lebanon. Methods: A cross-sectional design was utilized to survey (by phone) the caregivers of all pediatric leukemia patients on the rosters of the 2 largest cancer treatment facilities in Lebanon for years 2005-2009. A total of 125 parents out of 175 (71.4percent) completed the questionnaire, which included 3 sections: socio-demographic characteristics, clinical information and CAM use details. Data analysis employed univariate descriptive statistics, t-test, and χ 2 Results: Overall, 15.2percent of respondents reported using one or more CAM therapies for their child (95percent confidence interval: 8.9percent to 22.0percent). The main CAM therapies used included dietary supplements, prayer-spiritual healing, and unconventional cultural practices (ingesting bone ashes). CAM therapies were used for strengthening immunity (42.1percent) and improving the chance of cure (21percent). Pediatric users of CAM were 2 years older than nonusers and had been diagnosed with leukemia for a longer period of time (4.76 ± 3.24 vs 3.49 ± 2.38, P andlt;.05). The percentage of males among CAM users was higher than that among nonusers (89.5percent vs 56.6percent, P andlt;.05). Conclusion: Increasing awareness of both caretakers and physicians of pediatric leukemia patients on the effects and risks of CAM therapies is essential should rational, safe, and evidence-based utilization of CAM therapies be achieved. © The Author(s) 2011.Ammar W, 2001, J Med Liban, V49, P126; Baba S, 2010, CANCER SCI, V101, P787, DOI 10.1111-j.1349-7006.2009.01443.x; Ball SD, 2005, J AM DIET ASSOC, V105, P78, DOI 10.1016-j.jada.2004.10.008; Bishop FL, 2010, PEDIATRICS, V125, P768, DOI 10.1542-peds.2009-1775; Biswas S, 2009, ASIAN PAC J CANCER P, V10, P903; Bold J, 2001, J Pediatr Oncol Nurs, V18, P16, DOI 10.1053-jpon.2001.20403; Clerici CA, 2009, PEDIATR BLOOD CANCER, V53, P599, DOI 10.1002-pbc.22093; CROOKS V, 1991, J GERONTOL, V46, pM139; DOWNER SM, 1994, BRIT MED J, V309, P86; el Saghir N S, 1998, J Med Liban, V46, P4; Ernst E, 1999, EUR J PEDIATR, V158, P7, DOI 10.1007-s004310051000; Ernst E, 2001, J CLIN ONCOL, V19, P2365; Fernandez CV, 1998, J CLIN ONCOL, V16, P1279; Gozum S, 2007, CANCER NURS, V30, P38, DOI 10.1097-00002820-200701000-00007; GRUENWALD J, 2002, NUTRACOS, V5, P18; Gupta M, 2002, PHARMACOEPIDEM DR S, V11, P671, DOI 10.1002-pds.782; Hamidah A, 2009, PEDIATR BLOOD CANCER, V52, P70, DOI 10.1002-pbc.21798; Hensel M, 2009, SUPPORT CARE CANCER, V17, P47, DOI 10.1007-s00520-008-0452-y; Kaatsch P, 2010, CANCER TREAT REV, V36, P277, DOI 10.1016-j.ctrv.2010.02.003; Kelly KM, 2004, EUR J CANCER, V40, P2041, DOI 10.1016-j.ejca.2004.05.012; Lacour B, 2010, EUR J CANCER PREV, V19, P173, DOI 10.1097-CEJ.0b013e32833876c0; Laengler A, 2008, EUR J CANCER, V44, P2233, DOI 10.1016-j.ejca.2008.07.020; Madsen H, 2003, EUR J PEDIATR, V162, P334, DOI 10.1007-s00431-003-1180-4; Martel D, 2005, PEDIATR BLOOD CANCER, V44, P660, DOI 10.1002-pbc.20205; McCurdy EA, 2003, J PEDIAT HEMATOL ONC, V25, P125, DOI 10.1097-00043426-200302000-00008; Molassiotis Alexander, 2004, Eur J Oncol Nurs, V8, P50, DOI 10.1016-S1462-3889(03)00054-1; Montazeri A, 2007, EUR J CANCER CARE, V16, P144, DOI 10.1111-j.1365-2354.2006.00722.x; Moreira-Almeida A, 2008, CURR PAIN HEADACHE R, V12, P327, DOI 10.1007-s11916-008-0055-9; Mottonen M, 1997, MED PEDIATR ONCOL, V28, P205; Mousavi SM, 2010, J PEDIAT HEMATOL ONC, V32, P376, DOI 10.1097-MPH.0b013e3181e003f7; NADKARNI KM, 1976, INDIAN MATERIA MED C, V1; Nathanson I, 2007, J PEDIAT HEMATOL ONC, V29, P705; Paltiel O, 2001, J CLIN ONCOL, V19, P2439; Pui CH, 2008, LANCET, V371, P1030, DOI 10.1016-S0140-6736(08)60457-2; SALOMI NJ, 1992, CANCER LETT, V63, P41, DOI 10.1016-0304-3835(92)90087-C; Shih SF, 2008, SOC SCI MED, V67, P1183, DOI 10.1016-j.socscimed.2008.06.011; Sollner W, 2000, CANCER-AM CANCER SOC, V89, P873, DOI 10.1002-1097-0142(20000815)89:4873::AID-CNCR213.0.CO;2-K; *SPSS, 2003, STAT PACK WIND VERS; Vrooman LM, 2009, CURR OPIN PEDIATR, V21, P1, DOI 10.1097-MOP.0b013e32831f1f24; *WHO, 2008, WHO REP TRAD MED; Worthen DR, 1998, ANTICANCER RES, V18, P1527; Yeh CH, 2000, PEDIATR HEMAT ONCOL, V17, P55, DOI 10.1080-08880010027666856
Tinjauan Hukum terhadap Bangunan Hotel sebagai Objek Investasi (Riset pada Cambridge Condominium & Shopping Mall)
This thesis is titled: “Legal Review on Hotel Building as Investment Object (Research on Cambridge Condominium & Shopping Mall)”. The hotel building meant in this thesis is hotel building that is located on Cambridge Condominium & Shopping Mall complex. This hotel building is a unit of public housing. For its character as public housing, this building has regulations about common objects, common spaces and common lot. This hotel building can be used for various functions. It can be used as residential space and can also be used as profit opportunity by renting it to other parties. In this case, PT. Global Medan Town Square acts as the hotel owner and uses the building to be used as accommodation.
Related to rental management carried out by PT. Global Medan Town Square as both owner and developer is an interesting issue to discuss. Questions arise: what kind of legal regulations that appear in the rental management contract? Which legal regulations do the parties used for applying the rules? Is it by using groups of regulations as written in Indonesian Civil Code or by using groups of regulations specifically concerning public housing? How is each party’s right and obligation stated in the contract related to commonly possessed objects and what is the legal consequence in case an breach of contract happens? This is an interesting question because breach of contract may cancel a contract.
In this research, the author made a library research using Indonesian Civil Code, groups of legal regulations, books, seminars, articles, theses, etc. The author has also done field research by doing direct approach to a key person. In this case, the key person is a Notary related to the case and as a library support.
The contract that is contained in this thesis refers to Law No. 16 of 1985 concerning public housing, Indonesian Civil Code, and several other related regulations. Rights and obligations of all parties are protected by law and in case a breach of contract happens, discussion is preferred to solve any conflict that may arise. If this doesn’t solve the problem, legal action will be taken. Therefore, it is expected that the government may make more complete and comprehensive regulations concerning public housing, and contract regulations. It is important to guarantee legal protection for any party that is related in public housing ownershipTesis ini penulis beri judul : “Tinjauan Hukum Terhadap Bangunan Hotel Sebagai Objek Investasi (Riset Pada Cambridge Condominium & Shopping Mall)”.

Identity and Pluralism : Ethnicity, Religion and Values
This publication contains presentations from the workshop “Identity and Pluralism” held at Linköping University in Sweden in June 2008. ¨The first article by Reevany Bustami, Ellisha Nasruddin and Sarmila Md Sum offers a critique of the ‘diversity and inclusion’ discussions in the present CSR discourse. In doing so, it seeks to expand the parameters of diversity to include the broader community as well as the supply chain networks within which companies exist. It also examines the issues of diversity and pluralism within the context of multi religious and multi ethnic Malaysian society as well as the continuing debates of affirmative action originated from Malaysia’s New Economic Policy (NEP). In their essay on pluralism in Malaysian higher education Ellisha Nasruddin, Reevany Bustami and Ng Sen Fa discuss: 1) key future trends/alternatives within higher education and their cross-impacts; 2) how these trends/alternatives may create undesirable or desirable impact on ethnic pluralism; and 3) roadmap(s) for transformation within higher education vis-a-vis ethnic pluralism. What is the role of Christian churches in Malaysia? Göran Wiking discusses the isolationist characteristics inherent in some Malaysian churches and denominations. Secondly, a brief analysis of the phenomenon is attempted: is this a genuine or just a perceived impediment to national integration? Are there in fact indicators to the contrary, whereby a certain degree of ethnic isolation can serve to strengthen identity and foster more wholesome members of the society at large? Göran Collste discusses one aspect of Malaysian political pluralism; the policy of affirmative action. Affirmative action is favouring Malays and to be Muslim is one of the requirements for being beneficiary of affirmative action. He points at some problems for the policy of affirmative action in a time with increased religious tensions and an increased emphasis on religious affiliation as identity marker. What are the conditions for a real dialogue between members of different ethnic and religious groups? Peter Gan argues that openness to transformation by the other is not strictly speaking an ethic of reducing the other to the self. Rather, it is an orientation that is predicated upon a symmetric self-other relation. In exploring this form of openness, the author attempts to unravel the intricacies embedded within the dialogic process which permeates interethnic, particularly interreligious relations. The concept “secular state” is nowadays often used in both everyday discourse and scholarly debate. Often it comes with normative connotations; that the democratic state should be secular. However, the exact meaning of the concept is not clear. In his essay Marcus Agnafors examines different meanings of the concept “secular state”. He also discusses some arguments commonly presented in support of the idea that the state should, in some sense, be secular. Finally, Anne-Christine Hornborg’s essay deals with the struggle for identity by an Indian tribe in Canada. She discusses the impact of the so called residential school on contemporary Mi’kmaq life worlds and identities, drawing on interviews from fieldworks conducted in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.Authors participating in this publication apart from the editor: Reevany Bustami, Ellisha Nasruddin, Sarmila Md Sum, Ng Sen Fa, Göran Wiking, Peter Gan, Marcus Agnafors and Anne-Christine Hornborg.</p
