    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Doğa kaynaklı afetler, Van İl genelinde fiziksel, ekonomik, sosyal ve çevresel kayıplara neden olmaktadır. Sadece 2019-2022 yılları arasında deprem, sel, heyelan, çığ ve kaya düşmesi kaynaklı birden fazla afet yaşanmıştır. Bu olaylardan kaya düşmesine etki eden bölgedeki parametreler jeolojik, jeomorfolojik, klimatolojik, deprem ve bitki örtüsüdür. Bu parametrelerden sadece birinin etkin olduğu olaylar yaşandığı gibi her birinin farklı oranlarda etkisi vardır. Bununla birlikte insan hareketliliği ve nüfus artışına bağlı olarak bilinçsiz ve çarpık kentleşme de afet risklerinin artmasına neden olmaktadır. Afet risklerini azaltmak, toplumun ve yaşam çevresinin direnç derecesini arttırmak için tehlikeyi barındıran duyarlı alanların açık bir şekilde ortaya konulması gerekmektedir. Bu kapsamda Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri (CBS) kullanılarak Van İli sınırları içerisindeki kaya düşme duyarlılığı ortaya konulmuştur.     Tectonic Geomorphology of the Şemdinli Yüksekova Fault Zone (SYFZ) and Başkale Fault Zone (BFZ) (SE Turkey): Evidence from Morphometric Analysis and Neotectonic Structures

    The collision between the Arabian and Eurasian plates resulted in the uplift of The East Anatolian Province of Shortening (EAPS). Within the EAPS, the faulting mechanism is characterized by right- and left-lateral strike-slip faults, thrust faults, and a relatively limited occurrence of normal faults. When examined on a regional tectonic scale, about 70% of the deformation of the EAPS is controlled by strike-slip faults. However, the proportion of right- and left-lateral strike-slip faults contributing to this deformation remains unknown and is poorly understood. Two adjacent fault zones located at the southeastern margin of EAPS were selected to investigate the deformation associated with right- and left-lateral strike-slip mechanisms using morphometric analysis along with field observations. These fault zones are the Şemdinli Yüksekova Fault Zone (ŞYFZ), which exhibits right lateral deformation and is defined as a seismic gap, and the Başkale Fault Zone (BFZ), which has a left lateral deformation and that caused a destructive earthquake in (23/02/2020 ,Mw:5.9). To elucidate the relative degree of active tectonics of both fault zones, morphometric analysis were applied alongside field surveys. An adaptation of the Relative active tectonic index (Iat) was computed for Başkale and Yüksekova-Şemdinli sub-basins in the region. The results supported by field observations indicate that the drainage basins are largely controlled by fault activity and exhibit a youthful topographic character. Moreover, quantitative data derived from the Index of Active Tectonics (IAT) reveal that the Şemdinli-Yüksekova Fault Zone (SYFZ) demonstrates very high tectonic activity, while the Başkale Fault Zone (BFZ) displays moderate levels of active tectonic deformation. These numerical findings, which indicate ongoing deformation, are further corroborated by field observations that clearly reflect the surface expressions of tectonic activity

    Iğdır Fay Zonu (IFZ) Türkiye’nin en doğu ucunda, Ağrı Dağı’nın yaklaşık 13 km kuzeybatısında yer almaktadır. Kuzeybatıda Küllük köyünden başlayan fay güneydoğuda Kavaktepe köyüne kadar devam etmektedir. Yaklaşık olarak K20°B ile K60°B arasında değişen doğrultulara sahip olan sağ yanal doğrultu atımlı Iğdır Fay Zonu 19 alt geometrik segmentten oluşmaktadır. Fay kontrollü drenaj ağı, ötelenmiş akarsular ve alüvyal, kolüvyal yelpazeler ve başı kesik dereler fayın aktif olduğunu morfoloji üzerinde gösteren belirteçlerdir. Bu çalışmada Küçük Kafkas Tektonik Bloğu içerisinde konumlanan Iğdır Fay Zonu’nun bölge içerisindeki tektonik etkisinin belirlenmesi hedeflenmiştir. Bu hedefe bağlı olarak Iğdır Fay Zonu ve yakın civarının hem tarihsel hem de aletsel deprem kataloğu oluşturulmuş ve fay üzerinde morfometrik analizler (yüzey pürüzlülüğü, hipsometrik integral, havza asimetri faktörü, dağ önü kıvrımlılığı, vadi tabanı genişliğinin vadi yüksekliğine oranı) gerçekleştirilmiştir. Fay Zonu üzerinde belirlenen morfotektonik belirteçler ve indis sonuçları IFZ’nin normal bileşene de sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Birbirine parelel 5 alt kol halinde bulunan IFZ gevşeyen büklüm yapısı sergilemekte ve güneydoğu kısımda Ağrı Dağı açılma çatlağı ile birleşmektedir. Tarihsel dönem depremsellik ve morfometrik indis sonuçlarına bakıldığında çalışma alanının morfolojik olarak genç olduğu, yükselim hızının KB ve GD kesimlerinde yılda 0,5 mm’den fazla olduğu görülmektedir. Iğdır Fay Zonu boyu yapılan indis sonuçları değerlendirildiğinde Iğdır Fay Zonu’nun Ağrı Dağı’na yakın olan güneydoğu ucundaki segmentlerin göreceli olarak daha fazla deformasyon biriktirdiği ve daha fazla yükselme hızına sahip olduğu görülmektedir.The Iğdır Fault Zone (IFZ) is located at the easternmost edge of Turkey, approximately 13 km northwest of Mount Ağrı. The fault extends from Küllük village in the northwest to Kavaktepe village in the southeast. The right-lateral strike-slip Iğdır Fault Zone, which exhibits strike variations between N20°E and N60°E, consists of 19 sub-geometric segments. Fault-controlled drainage networks, offset streams, alluvial and colluvial fans, and truncated valleys are key morphological indicators of the fault’s activity. This study aims to determine the tectonic influence of the Iğdır Fault Zone, which is situated within the Small Caucasus Tectonic Block. To achieve this objective, both historical and instrumental earthquake catalogs were compiled for the IFZ and its vicinity. Additionally, morphometric analyses were conducted on the fault zone, including surface roughness, hypsometric integral, basin asymmetry factor, mountain front sinuosity, and the ratio of valley floor width to valley height. The identified morphotectonic markers and index results indicate that the IFZ also possesses a normal fault component. The fault zone consists of five parallel sub-branches and exhibits a releasing bend structure, merging with the&nbsp; Mount Ağrı extensional crack in the southeastern section. The historical seismicity and morphometric index results suggest that the study area is morphologically young, with an uplift rate exceeding 0.5 mm per year in the NW and SE sections. When the fault length and index results are evaluated, it is observed that the southeastern segments of the Iğdır Fault Zone, particularly those closer to Mount Ağrı, have accumulated relatively higher deformation and exhibit a greater uplift rate.</p

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     This study examines the morphotectonic characteristics, segment geometry, and deformation behavior of the Yeniköşk Fault within the current compressional tectonic regime by integrating digital elevation models, SWAT profiles, drone imagery, and detailed field observations. Five principal segments—Yeşilköy, Ziyaret, Kireç, Özkaynak, and Çerkezkaya—were identified along the fault trace, each displaying distinct deformation patterns. The presence of well-preserved fault scarps, fault-front depressions, and elevated local relief values, particularly within the Özkaynak and Çerkezkaya segments, indicates that the southern portions of the fault accommodate more intense and localized deformation. Topographic profiles acquired both parallel and perpendicular to the fault demonstrate uplift and block tilting associated with thrust faulting, providing evidence for sustained Holocene activity. Collectively, the results show that the Yeniköşk Fault constitutes a key structural component of the contractional regime governing the eastern Lake Van Basin and suggest that the fault possesses significant potential to generate future surface-rupturing earthquakes.</p

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
