Mercy, Mercy, Mercy: An Ethic of Reconciliation

    No full text
The author of this dissertation contends that reconciliation is the goal of divine and human action. The problem addressed is that human attempts at reconciliation are incomplete. Reconciliation can be defined with careful attention to the use of the words mercy, justice, and truth. The disse1iation\u27s thesis is that the South African expe1ience of mercy provides a reconciliation model for relationship, conversation, and ministry in Portland, Oregon. Chapter 1 introduces the challenge of addressing the problem through an account of a Restorative Listening Project on Gentrification meeting. The challenge is to move from words to action. Chapter 1 then describes the ministry contexts in and around Westminster Presbyterian Church in P01iland. Chapter 2 addresses four key issues: (a) human and divine aspects of reconciliation and the relationship between them, (b) reconciliation as a central theme in the Bible, (c) enacting human reconciliation, and (d) biblical roots of the words restorative justice and mercy. Chapter 3 addresses four issues similar to those in chapter 2 from a theological perspective: (a) human and divine aspects of reconciliation, (b) a postmodern challenge to universals and reconciliation as a goal, ( c) enacting human reconciliation, and ( d) justice out of balance. The final issue exemplifies how determining the meaning of the word justice can lead to tension. In this chapter, as in the previous one, the author intentionally chooses scholars who disagree to explore the tensions that stand in the way of reconciliation. Chapter 4 describes the South African experience of mercy, relates mercy to forgiveness, and defines truth as narrative truth. It examines critiques of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission experience in South Africa and provides a model for reconciliation based on the South African experience. Chapter 5 describes the Restorative Listening Project on Gentrification and the Genesis Community Fellowship, used by the dissertation\u27s author in translating the reconciliation model from chapter 4 into action. Chapter 6 claims that a balance of mercy, justice, and truth is the strongest and deepest reconciliation response to human divisions and injustice. The dissertation claims that balance demands increased attention to mercy. The dissertation shows that though human attempts at reconciliation are imperfect, it is important to continue them

Euthanasis as an act of false mercy

    No full text
Ks. Adam Skreczko,Euthanasis is sometimes perceived as an act of mercy, and this view is also shared by many Christians. They say it is justified when it arises due to mercy, love of a neighbour, care and sympathy one feels while looking at the sufferings of a person. That is why it is necessary to distingush euthanasia from mercy. This concerns not only non-believers who do not analyse the issue, but also the Christians who treat the Church’s teaching selectively and are driven by false views. In the title of the article, euthanasia is defined as an act of false mercy. The author focuses on the following problems: a) Manipulating terminology concerning the problem, b) Is euthanasia ’good death’? c) The need for the ’imagination of mercy’, d) the proper understanding of mercy in the context of euthanasia.Uniwersytet Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego w Warszawie11/113714

    No full text
The aim of the study was to explore and describe the perceptions posed by society towards homosexual individuals in selected South African rural communities. The research methodology employed was a qualitative approach via the used of a purposive sampling method for the selection of 12 voluntary participants who were willing to participate in the study. In-depth interviews were conducted and data analysed according to thematic content method. The perceptions of community members were shared through participants' responses to a central research question. Participants expressed different responses which were both positive and negative towards homosexuality. The findings of the study showed that society is still conservative when it comes to homosexuality. However, it discourages harsh negative attitudes towards homosexual people. The study recommends that Society needs to develop more accepting and tolerant behaviors towards homosexuality

HUMAN CAPITAL ASSESSMENT INDICATORS AS INFLUENTIAL DETERMINANTS PERTAINING TO THE ADMISSION CRITERIA UTILIZED BY PRE-LICENSURE PROGRAMS FOR NURSING EDUCATION

The attainment of educational credentials contributes to the acquisition of human capital. Academic preparedness is a component therein that allows for the attainment of increased levels of education. Most institutions of higher education utilize measures of academic preparedness, such as grade point averages or standardized tests. Requirements for the levels of academic preparedness are based upon many factors. The requirements most relevant to this study are the selectivity of the institution and the academic preparedness of potential candidates of pre-licensure programs for nursing education. The pre-licensure education of nurses is enigmatic when compared to other professional disciplines. Pre-licensure education for registered nurses exists in three distinct and differently classified programs: a hospital-based diploma program, an associate degree program, or a baccalaureate program. (There is an additional baccalaureate program, known as accelerated second degree programs, for students possessing a baccalaureate degree in another discipline. These accelerated programs are not included in this discussion.) The National Center for Education Statistics classifies each of the three programs, making clear that the differing program levels of post-secondary education are neither equivalent nor interchangeable. According to the literature, the academic preparedness of individuals and the level of selectivity of higher education institutions vary greatly depending upon the particular classification of nursing program. What then, is the level of programmatic selectivity, given that all three pre-licensure programs produce candidates for the identical occupational certification while attracting candidates known to have varying levels of academic preparedness? This study aimed to determine the levels of selectivity of the three pre-licensure nursing education programs types so as identify trends and patterns within and across pre-licensure program types. In order to determine these trends and patterns, the author examined the admissions requirements that are transparent to the public on schools’ websites in which these programs are housed, employing the methodology of document analysis. The determination for the level of selectivity was based upon Barron’s Measure of Selectivity (Barron’s Educational Series, 2011)

The Relation of Human Suffering in God's Grace

    No full text
Suffering is a legacy of the existence of the world of souls [humans] living on earth. Suffering is not imagination, not some nightmare, on the contrary is real, actual, but not academic. Suffering comes when humans are born. Humans cannot escape suffering. Suffering comes from various angles of life. Suffering comes from a broken relationship with God. Starting from the failure of Adam and Eve's relationship with God, humans began to feel suffering. Humans cannot resist the suffering they experience. The purpose of this study is to determine the cause of human suffering and its consequences, and how to overcome suffering. The author uses a descriptive method of literature and research results as follows: first, mercy is the perfect character of the deity of God. God's mercy from eternal to eternal until humans are afraid of God. Kindness is the essence of the quality of divinity, but God shows mercy on an ongoing basis through His sovereign will. Second, the source of God's mercy. The source of God's mercy is God's goodness and love expressed mysteriously. God's mercy is stated to guide someone to live righteously. People who receive God's mercy are living in godly living conditions and they need God's protection or care. Third, God's mercy cannot be stopped by humans. Instead humans can be made to not understand by God. God is free to act surprisingly, correcting human deviation. God is free to allow the test of Satan and not to tell anyone about it that was tested. God is also free to regulate &nbsp

Big Data, Big Libraries, Big Problems?: the 2014 LibTech Anti-talk?

The desire to create automatons is a familiar theme in human history, and during the age of the Enlightenment mechanical automatons became not only an “emblem of the cosmos”, but a symbol of man’s confidence that he would unlock nature’s greatest mysteries and fully harness her power. And yet only a century later, automatons had begun to represent human repression and servitude, a theme later picked up by writers of science fiction. Man’s confidence undeterred, the endgame of the modern scientific and technological mindset, or MSTM, seems to be increasingly coming into view with the rise of “information technology” in general and “Big data” in particular. Along with those who wield them, these can be seen as functioning together as a “mechanical muse” of sorts – surprisingly alluring – and, like a physical automaton can serve as a symbol – a microcosm – of what the MSTM sees (at the very least in practice) as the cosmic machine, our “final frontier”. And yet, individuals who unreflectively participate in these things – giving themselves over to them and seeking the powers afforded by the technology apart from technology’s rightful purposes – in fact yield to the same pragmatism and reductionism those wielding them are captive to. Thus, they ultimately nullify themselves philosophically, politically, and economically – their value increasingly being only the data concerning their persons, and its perceived usefulness. Likewise libraries, the time-honored place of, and symbol for, the intellectual flowering of the individual, will, insofar as they spurn the classical liberal arts (with the idea that things are intrinsically good, and in the case of humans, special as well) in favor of the alluring embrace of MSTM-driven “information technology” and Big data - unwittingly contribute to their irrelevance and demise as they find themselves increasingly less needed, valued, wanted. Likewise for the liberal arts as a whole, and in fact history itself, if the acid of a “science” untethered from what is, in fact, good (intrinsically), continues to gain strengt

It is the main working tool for any professional who uses their voice. Teachers are one of the populations most vulnerable to vocal pathologies due to the need to raise their voices above the ambient noise in their workplace, which is generated by the population they address (their students). The objective of this field project, entitled “Assessment of the level of voice risk perception among teachers working at Plaza Sésamo and Jason Miller schools,” was to identify risk situations that affect the working life and vocal production of teachers. The “EVM-D” risk detection scale was used, which detects situations of vocal risk for teachers within the school context. The total population applied the scale consisted of 70 teachers from two private educational institutions. It is important to note that the responses obtained were anonymized and are kept by the author of this project. The results showed that 79% of teachers had a very low level of vocal risk and 9% of the same population had a moderate risk. The results obtained from the scale showed a slight vocal risk or absence thereof in the teachers surveyed, despite being considered a high-risk vocal community due to the intensity to which they expose their voices in their context. Although these results are low, the percentage of moderate risk cannot be ignored, and therefore, it is necessary to implement preventive measures to guard against the progression of any vocal pathologyPregrad
