Does monetary integration lead to an increase in FDI flows? An empirical investigation from the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ)
AbstractThis paper investigates the relationship between monetary integration, foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade in the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) using annual time series for the period 1980–2013. It also examines whether trade and FDI are complement or substitute. Several econometric models are applied including Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and fully-modified OLS (FMOLS). Our empirical results revealed that FDI flows into the WAMZ is influence positively by monetary integration. The findings also suggest that while real GDP, large population size and greater distance positively influence FDI flows, weak economic freedom index negatively impact FDI flows into the zone. The results support the argument that monetary union positively affect trade. Our empirical finding support the hypothesis that FDI and trade flows are complementary. The results are in line with earlier research findings. Therefore, any policy that promotes trade such as monetary integration enhances FDI inflows as well. The findings offer perspectives and insight for a new policy in WAMZ economies in their drive to attain sustainable economic growth

Determinants of Islamic banking growth: an empirical analysis
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the determinants of growth rate in Islamic banking using annual time series data.
Design/methodology/approach
The author applied several econometrics methods including generalized linear model and survey-based indicators. The author uses the World Bank Enterprise Survey data to supplement the answers.
Findings
The results support the view that high oil prices, stable domestic prices, higher educated populace and greater presence of capital resources have positive effects on growth in Islamic banking. The findings, however, revealed that instability adversely affects Islamic banking growth. The author found no clear conclusion on the impact of economic growth, greater presence of Muslim population and presence of sharia in the legal system of the country on growth in Islamic banking. The major constraints impeding Islamic banking growth include regulations, tax rates and skilled labor force.
Originality/value
There is no empirical work that has been done on the determinants of Islamic banking growth by taking into account the following factors: oil price dynamics, sharia compliant, macroeconomic variables, instability and World Bank Enterprise survey. This paper attempts to search for the push and pull factors of Islamic banking growth to fill the gap in determining the Islamic banking growth.

The Umayyad presence in the Bilad al-Sham: A toponymic study
This dissertation presents a study of the toponymies of the Umayyad estates and establishments in the area between the desert and the sown in the Bilad al-Sham. The toponymies of the Umayyad sites have received scant attention from scholars studying the Umayyad period. In the past, very little was known of the Umayyad settlement policy in the Bilad al-Sham due to the lack of systematic explorations. In the last four decades, however, several comprehensive surveys and excavations have been carried out in the area. The time seems appropriate for a re-analysis of both archaeological and textual material. The methodology used in this research involved the examination of both archaeological and textual record related to these establishments. Literary sources play a significant role in investigating the names of sites, although our sources are all from the Abbasid period. We have investigated the meaning of the names of these sites. The name of the building may be a clear reflection of intention of its owner and a further indication of his personal attitude toward it. Archaeological investigations to the Umayyad sites showed that these constructions were located near water resources and they have canal irrigation, regardless whether these canals were already founded and just repaired and reused by the Umayyads. Our investigations demonstrated that the Umayyads had a settlement policy of turning the desert fringes into places of habitation (tamsir). The view presented here is that the Umayyad sites served two purposes. First, the primary reason behind the Umayyad building program was related to agricultural exploitation. Second, the Umayyad caliphs built such a significant number of palaces between the desert and the sown to give themselves the opportunity to be in close contact with the Arab tribes. In fact, some of the Umayyad buildings might have been built for members of these tribes. Without establishing themselves among the Bedouin tribes, the Umayyads would have had difficulty in organizing their armies. Accordingly, as long as the Umayyads were able to keep their prestige among the Bedouin, they could organize their power. Once they neglected the source of their power among the Syrian Bedouin and left their desert residences, as was the case of the last Umayyad Caliphs, Yazid III and Marwan II, the Umayyad caliphate came to an end. Finally, it has been widely believed that almost all Umayyad settlements were abandoned by the fall of the Umayyad dynasty in 132/750. Now this claim has been rejected because archaeological investigations in many of these sites indicate occupation continuity from the Umayyad into the Abbasid periods. Mapping transference : problems of African literature and translation from French into English
Although a number of African literary works have been
translated from French into English since the middle of this
century, research and debate on their translation has remained
scanty, fragmentary, and scattered in diverse learned journals
and other short publications. This thesis seeks to broaden the
scope of research by mapping out aspects of transference in
translation in terms of analysis and transfer strategies that
have been, or could be, used. A selection of major translated
works have been compared with their originals, to give textual
examples indicative of transfer strategies.
Current issues in African literature as well as typical
features of the literature in French and English have been
explored in order to examine differences between them and English
and French literatures. The implications of these differences (at
the levels of content, cultural setting, peculiar use of English
and French, and the target audience) for translation are
considered, and a brief historical survey of the translation of
African literature provides insights into how translators have
approached, and continue to approach, literary texts as well as
cope with their target readership. Furthermore, dominant trends
in literary translation studies (mainly in the West) are explored
to determine if, and in what ways, they relate to translation
studies in Africa.
The analysis of transfer strategies focuses on the
distinctive features of francophone African literary texts,
drawing on relevant Western literary translation theories and
models, on African literary theory and criticism, as well as on
other disciplines likely contribute to an informed understanding
of the texts. Finally, a case study applies the analysis to a
text which is translated, and transfer strategies discussed
