The Effect of Single-Dose Albendazole on the Prevalence of SoilTransmitted Helminth Infections and Nutritional Status of Children in Perokonda Village, Southwest Sumba
Perokonda Village located in Sumba Island is one of the most underdeveloped regions in Indonesia with high risk of soil-transmitted helminthes (STH) infections. These parasites could affect nutritional status of the subjects. This study was aimed to know the nutritional status and to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment using singledose albendazole on the prevalence of STH infections in Perokonda Village. This study used a pre-post design. Data were collected twice on August 2015 and January 2016. Data of STH infections were obtained from stool samples examined under light microscope. Nutritional status was assessed by determining Z-score in accordance with WHO chart. A total of 66 children were included ranging between 1-12 years old. This study showed that before treatment, subjects with normal nutritional status were 84,8% and 15,2% were underweight. After treatment, subjects with normal nutritional status declined to 75,8%, subjects who were underweight increased to 19,7%, and 4,5% were severely underweight. The result also showed that prevalence of STH was still high after treatment. Prevalence of A.lumbricoides infections significantly decreased (McNemar test, p=0,001), while prevalence of T.trichiura and hookworm infections increased. In conclusion, single dose albendazole significantly reduced the infections of A.lumbricoides, but it did not reduce the prevalence of T.trichiura and hookworm infections. Further study is needed to measure the effectiveness of treatment using triple dose albendazole for STH infection and its association with children’s nutritional status in Perokonda Village
Obesity Is Less Frequently Associated with Cognitive Impairment in Elderly Individuals: A Cross-Sectional Study in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Obesity is one of the factors associated with cognitive impairment. However, obesity may differently affect cognitive function in different age groups, and scarce data are available from low- and middle-income countries. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the association between obesity and cognitive impairment among 143 elderly individuals in Yogyakarta. We recorded the sociodemographic factors and some comorbidities, also measured the body mass index as a parameter of obesity, cognitive function using Montreal Cognitive Assessment—Indonesia, mood condition and depression status using geriatric depression scale-short form, as well as the daily life function using Activity of Daily Living and Instrumental Activity of Daily Living. After adjustment for the sociodemographic and comorbidities, we found that subjects with older age were more likely to have cognitive impairment (odds ratio [OR] 3.544, 95%CI: 1.36–9.22, p < 0.01) and compared with elderly individuals with normal weight, obese elderly individuals were 40% less likely to have cognitive impairment (OR 0.604, 95%CI: 0.39–0.95, p < 0.05). This study suggests that obesity in elderly individuals is less frequently associated with cognitive impairment. These findings support the reverse causation mechanism related to body mass index (BMI) and cognitive impairment in low/middle-income countries
Correlation of serum D-dimer level and the event microvessel cardiac thrombosis observed on core biopsy in post mortem COVID-19 Patients in Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya, Indonesia
Abstract
Link of Video Abstract: https://youtu.be/ivpwfj9PxWQ
Background: Microvascular coronary thrombosis is an emerging risk factor that worsens the prognosis of COVID-19 patients. This study aims to show for the first time a descriptive of histopathologic findings from post-mortem COVID-19 patients and to analyze whether D-Dimer serum level, a marker of hyper-coagulopathy, correlates with coronary microvascular thrombosis from the cardiac core biopsy.
Method: This was an observational analytic study with a retrospective cohort design from July-December 2020. Cardiac core biopsy was taken from patients who died while treated at the isolation ICU at Dr. Soetomo due to severe COVID-19. The samples were taken in 1-hour post-mortem and then analyzed histopathologically with Hematoxylin-eosin staining under a light microscope to evaluate the presence of coronary microvascular thrombosis and other pathological findings from the cardiac biopsy. Clinical information and D-Dimer levels from medical records and analyzed for coronary microvascular thrombosis using Man-Whitney and C-statistic analysis using SPSS 22 software.
Result: There were 39 samples of post-mortem patients in this study. The majority were men (71.8%), with a mean age of 48.9 years old. Focal microvessel coronary thrombosis was found in 28%). The median D-Dimer level was increased from the average baseline (3460 mg/dl). However, there was no significant difference in D-dimer levels between focal microvessel coronary thrombosis incidents (p-value 0.827, C statistic AUC 0.523). The lack of focal necrosis in the surrounding tissue suggests that the thrombosis resulted from proximal embolization to distal capillary coronary, which already happened before, rather than the primary in-situ process in microvascular, hence may explain why D-Dimer was not correlated with the finding of coronary microvascular thrombosis in this study.
Conclusion: D-dimer serum levels were not associated with focal microvessel thrombi in post-mortem COVID-19 patients. This result supports previous studies that showed D-Dimer was not specific to detect thrombosis in microvascular

<p><em><span>KKN is a real action from students as a form of community service. The purpose of this activity is how students can help solve phenomena that exist in society, especially those related to the environment where they live, especially related to inorganic waste management. As is well known, an organic waste if not managed properly can damage the environment on the one hand, but on the other hand it can be used for environmental sustainability and beauty and can even be used as a source of additional income for households through creative management properly and correctly. Implementation of KKN group 15 which was carried out in West Sidomulyo Sub-District in RW 26 at RT I, II and III with "awareness raising efforts and real action in environmental management" in the form of an organic waste management to become "Paving Block". This activity can reduce the negative impact of inorganic waste scattered around people's homes. So as to create a clean and comfortable environment that will have an impact on improving the quality of life of the community both in terms of health and the economy.</span></em></p>
