Heaven is Hard Work: The Nation of Islam\u27s Economic Philosophy, Program, and Voices from the Pioneers, 1930-1975

No full text
Elijah Muhammad led the Nation of Islam (NOI) from 1934-1974 and propelled it as an organization to help black people in America fight economic oppression. Muhammad urged black Americans to accept Islam and create a “heaven on earth” by developing and executing an economic program in which several business enterprises opened in major cities. Muhammad encouraged members to adhere to a strict moral code that included working hard and saving money. Some NOI members worked within the movement’s enterprises and others opened their own businesses. This manuscript surveys the Nation of Islam’s economic program in Atlanta, Chicago, and New York under Muhammad’s leadership. This work also extracts and contextualizes over twenty testimonials from the pioneers or NOI members who participated in the economic program between 1930-1975 primarily from interviews conducted by the author as well as accounts found in the NOI’s newspaper, Muhammad Speaks. Findings reveal that the NOI’s economic program helped some pioneers develop an identity, improved their work ethic, provided a way out of economic oppression, and made them economically self-sufficient

PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS (PCMs) APPLICATION IN BUILDING ENVELOP (A REVIEW)

No full text
Global contribution of energy consumption of building sector, both residential and commercial, is very high and steadily increased. In buildings, chief energy consumer is heating ventilation &air conditioning (HVAC) system used for thermal comfort and maintaining indoor air quality. Building envelope plays vital role in regulating indoor thermal comfort conditions as it is interface between indoor and outdoor environment. The key component of building envelop are walls, roof, floor and fenestrations. Energy consumption of HVAC system can be reduced up to desired limit by using different methods in construction of building envelop. One of these innovative methods is use of phase change materials (PCM). PCM are considered as a possible solution for controlling energy demand of buildings. PCM\u27s are substances that can absorb and release thermal energy by changing their phase from solid to liquid at room temperature and stabilize thermal comfort inside the building with reduced carbon dioxide emissions. In this paper recent developments in the field of PCMs, their application in building envelop, incorporation and their influence on energy reduction are reviewed.Key Words: Energy consumption, Building Envelope, Phase Change Material (PCM)

A class of discrete predator–prey interaction with bifurcation analysis and chaos control

No full text
The interaction between prey and predator is well-known within natural ecosystems. Due to their multifariousness and strong link population dynamics, predators contain distinct features of ecological communities. Keeping in view the Nicholson-Bailey framework for host-parasitoid interaction, a discrete-time predator–prey system is formulated and studied with implementation of type-II functional response and logistic prey growth in form of the Beverton-Holt map. Persistence of solutions and existence of equilibria are discussed. Moreover, stability analysis of equilibria is carried out for predator–prey model. With implementation of bifurcation theory of normal forms and center manifold theorem, it is proved that system undergoes transcritical bifurcation around its boundary equilibrium. On the other hand, if growth rate of consumers is taken as bifurcation parameter, then system undergoes Neimark-Sacker bifurcation around its positive equilibrium point. Methods of chaos control are introduced to avoid the populations from unpredictable behavior. Numerical simulation is provided to strengthen our theoretical discussion

A Modified Energy Detection Based Spectrum Sensing Algorithm for Green Cognitive Radio Communication

No full text
Spectrum Sensing is the first and fundamental function of Cognitive Cycle which plays a vital role in the success of CRs (Cognitive Radios). Spectrum Sensing indicate the presence and absence of PUs (Primary Users) in RF (Radio Frequency) spectrum occupancy measurements. In order to correctly determine the presence and absence of Primary Users, the algorithms in practice include complex mathematics which increases the computational complexity of the algorithm, thus shifted the CRs to operate as ?green? communication systems. In this paper, an energy efficient and computationally less complex, energy detection based Spectrum Sensing algorithm have been proposed. The design goals of the proposed algorithm are to save the processing and sensing energies. At first, by using less MAC (Multiply and Accumulate) operation, it saves the processing energy needed to determine the presence and absence of PUs. Secondly, it saves the sensing energy by providing a way to find lowest possible sensing time at which spectrum is to be sensed. Two scenarios have been defined for testing the proposed algorithm i.e. simulate detection capability of Primary Users in ideal and noisy scenarios. Detection of PUs in both of these scenarios have been compared to obtain the probability of detection. Energy Efficiency of the proposed algorithm has been proved by making performance comparison between the proposed (less complex) algorithm and the legacy energy detection algorithm. With reduced complexity, the proposed spectrum sensing algorithm can be considered under the paradigm of Green Cognitive Radio Communicatio
