Evidence for the decay B0→J/ψω and measurement of the relative branching fractions of meson decays to J/ψη and J/ψη′
No full textFirst evidence of the B 0 → J / ψ ω decay is found and the B s 0 → J / ψ η and B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb -1 collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0 decay:frac(B (B 0 → J / ψ ω), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 0.89 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.07 (syst),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 14.0 ± 1.2 (stat) - 1.5 + 1.1 (syst) - 1.0 + 1.1 (frac(f d, f s)),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 12.7 ± 1.1 (stat) - 1.3 + 0.5 (syst) - 0.9 + 1.0 (frac(f d, f s)), where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of f d / f s, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of B 0 and B s 0 mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ and B s 0 → J / ψ η decays is measured to befrac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B s 0 → J / ψ η)) = 0.90 ± 0.09 (stat) - 0.02 + 0.06 (syst)

Vegf‐independent activation of müller cells by the vitreous from proliferative diabetic retinopathy patients
No full textProliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), a major complication of diabetes mellitus, results from an inflammation‐sustained interplay among endothelial cells, neurons, and glia. Even though anti‐vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) interventions represent the therapeutic option for PDR, they are only partially efficacious. In PDR, Müller cells undergo reactive gliosis, produce inflammatory cytokines/chemokines, and contribute to scar formation and retinal neovascularization. However, the impact of anti‐VEGF interventions on Müller cell activation has not been fully elucidated. Here, we show that treatment of MIO‐M1 Müller cells with vitreous obtained from PDR patients stimulates cell proliferation and motility, and activates various intracellular signaling pathways. This leads to cytokine/chemokine upregulation, a response that was not mimicked by treatment with recombinant VEGF nor inhibited by the anti‐VEGF drug ranibizumab. In contrast, fibroblast growth factor‐2 (FGF2) induced a significant overexpression of various cytokines/chemokines in MIO‐M1 cells. In addition, the FGF receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor BGJ398, the pan‐FGF trap NSC12, the heparin‐binding protein antagonist N‐tert-butyloxycarbonyl‐Phe‐Leu‐Phe‐Leu‐Phe Boc2, and the anti‐inflammatory hydrocortisone all inhibited Müller cell activation mediated by PDR vitreous. These findings point to a role for various modulators beside VEGF in Müller cell activation and pave the way to the search for novel therapeutic strategies in PDR

No full textAttraverso il personaggio di Paul Gompitz, il racconto La passeggiata da Rostock a Siracusa (1995) di F. C. Delius narra la reale esperienza di Klaus Müller che, dopo una lunga e accurata pianificazione, nel 1988 fugge temporaneamente dalla Repubblica Democratica Tedesca per ripercorrere il viaggio in Italia effettuato a piedi, nel 1802, dal conterraneo scrittore J. G. Seume. Il testo di Delius consente non solo di mettere a fuoco la funzione del viaggio di formazione setto-ottocentesco nel contesto geo-politico della Germania dell’Est, ma anche di indagare interessanti questioni sul piano spaziale, temporale e narrativo. L’Italia, meta agognata da Gompitz/Müller sin dall’infanzia, si configura nel testo soprattutto come parte integrante dell’Occidente libero e capitalista, la cui raffigurazione letteraria mostra in che misura rappresentare l’Altro implichi rappresentare se stessi

Measurement of the CP-violating phase \phi s in Bs->J/\psi\pi+\pi- decays
No full textMeasurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase phi_s in Bs decays is of prime importance in probing new physics. Here 7421 +/- 105 signal events from the dominantly CP-odd final state J/\psi pi+ pi- are selected in 1/fb of pp collision data collected at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. A time-dependent fit to the data yields a value of phi_s=-0.019^{+0.173+0.004}_{-0.174-0.003} rad, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. No evidence of direct CP violation is found
