Two Wrong Decisions are Worse Than One: Dual-Task Performance on an ID Screening Task
Using identification documents (IDs) is important to many security-related professionals who compare an ID to a live person. ID screening is a two-part process - the card and identity need to be authenticated. Psychology research has focused on identity verification without considering card verification or eye movements. Participants will wear eye tracking glasses while making 50 card and/or identity authentication decisions. Each trial will present a physical ID card depicting a facial image beside a facial video. Afterwards, participants will complete a standard face matching test (KFMT). We predict that dual-task interference (the Card and Identity authentication) will reduce accuracy and increase reaction times compared to single-task performance (Card or Identity verification). We also predict that fixation count, fixation duration, and saccade count may vary by condition and accuracy. This research may inform real-world ID screening situations to support implementation-oriented initiatives to increase safety at ID screening checkpoints
Going Gray Too Early: Color (Grayscale) Effects on Correct Facial Identification
Comparing identification documents (IDs) to the person presenting them is common before accessing restricted goods, areas, and services. Research has revealed ID comparison errors such as the low prevalence effect (i.e., rarity of fake IDs presented), document bias (i.e., reduced performance when ID comparison vs. real face comparison), size disparity (i.e., difference in size of ID and real face), and the cross-race effect (i.e., difficulty discerning faces of another race). The current study investigated how grayscale face images on IDs compared to color face images on IDs. Participants compared 48 IDs (color or grayscale) to a color video of a person. This task was performed while wearing eye tracking glasses. We predict errors in discriminability and response bias that stem from color disparity (i.e., difference in color between ID and video). Further, we included eye tracking technology to study eye movement differences between the two conditions
Many FACETS, One Emotion: Reporting the Valence and Labeling of Emotional Faces
Common facial expressions correspond with universal emotions across cultures. Therefore, researchers need normative data from existing facial databases to study distinct processes that involve facial emotion recognition and facial identity recognition. FACETS (Faces Across Camera, Environment, Time, and Settings) is the most comprehensive option, including diversity, variability, and emotionality for 265 different facial image sets. Approximately N =300 participants will view several emotional facial images from the FACETS database and provide an emotional label (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, distinctiveness, or neutral), rate emotional valence (i.e., strength of emotion), and rate emotional genuineness (i.e., the degree to which the expression is a natural emotional response and not posed). We will calculate and report descriptive statistics for all 1590 FACETS images. By adding emotion ratings to the FACETS database, we aim to provide stimuli that support researchers’ future studies on topics such as emotional intelligence, mood disorders, and emotional development
Exposing Kids to STEM: Creating an Engineering Kit to Inspire Future Engineers and to Determine the Effectiveness of Different Teaching Methods
abstract: This thesis presents a kit of materials intended to present students with a glimpse of what engineering entails by guiding them through building engineering projects similar to what is in the real world. The objective of this project is to pique the interest of children by introducing them to lesser known engineering related topics, and increasing their literacy of terms and methods engineers use to solve problems. The effectiveness of the kit’s content and teaching methods was tested in a classroom of 6th graders and was measured using the responses from surveys handed out. I found that kit did in fact positively lead to a change in the way the students perceived engineering, and it taught students about new engineering related topics. Students were capable of completing difficult tasks of wiring and coding successfully through the use of detailed instruction. However, the instructions were seen in two opposing views of either being too overwhelming or more guidance was necessary
The degree work is based on the following research question: What is the relationship between governance, social capital and citizen culture in the municipality of Cáqueza? and in what way do these elements affect the construction of the civic community?
In the first part of the research the theoretical discussion of the concepts will be approached taking as main axis the considerations of Robert Putnam in the construction of the civic community, the governance networks proposed by RW Rhodes, the social capital centered on the associative links and civic values, as well as the civic culture in its sociocultural dimension oriented to the fulfillment of norms and the promotion of the political culture. This allows building conceptual bridges through three transversal elements in the concepts: networks, trust and norms.
On the other hand, the second and third chapter of the work, take as a case study the community of Cáqueza Cundinamarca, place of origin of the author of the research. Based on the conceptual framework developed, a survey is developed (based on public surveys of social capital and citizen culture) and a series of semi-structured interviews that allow an exploratory approach to the governance networks, the level of citizen culture and the degree of social capital in the municipality. This provides inputs for the analysis of their current situation and their internal dynamics, which makes it possible to understand to what extent these elements are present and contribute to improving the community of Caqueceña towards a possible transformation as a civic community.Politólogo (a)Pregrad
The microscopic distribution of hydrophilic polymers in interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of medical grade silicone
By introducing hydrophilic polymers into silicone medical devices, highly beneficial biomedical properties can be realized. An established solution to introduce hydrophilic polymers is to form an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) by performing the hydrogel synthesis in the presence of silicone swollen in supercritical carbon dioxide. The precise distribution of the two polymers is not known, and determining this is the goal of this study. Neutron scattering and microscopy were used to determine the distribution of the hydrophilic guest polymer. Atomic force microscopy revealed that the important length scale on the surface of these materials is 10–100 nm, and spin-echo small-angle neutron scattering (SESANS) on IPNs submerged in D2O revealed structures of the same scale within the interior and enabled quantification of their size. SESANS with hydration by D2O proved to be the only scattering technique that could determine the structure of the bulk of these types of materials, and it should be used as an important tool for characterizing polymer medical devices.RST/Neutron and Positron Methods in MaterialsRST/Technici PoolRID/TS/Technici Poo
The aim of this interdisciplinary study is to situate development as a process and use this knowledge to contextualize the cycling inclusion in the national urban mobility policy, aiming to understand the factors related to this process that hinder initiatives and strategies from sectors and from agents that highlight the various positive aspects of this inclusion. To attain this proposed goal the following methodological procedures were adopted: literature review, documental research, data surveys and participative research. The literature review and the documental research involved technical and scientific publications, magazines, documents published by governmental institutions and laws or federal bills, decrees related to urban mobility, and research on electronic sites of national and international entities. The actors and agents approached are part of the government, technical (public and private), industry and commerce, and civil society sectors, related to the movements of insertion of cycling mobility in the national urban mobility policy, which were asked to contribute through personal interviews, via Skype, telephone and electronic messages. The effort resulted in a revision text permeated with interviews and testimonials from urban mobility policy actors and agents involved in the Brazilian scenario, dialoguing with the scientific and technical literature throughout the chapters that address: the Society Development; Urban Mobility in the Environmental Sustainability Agenda; Cycling Mobility in the Brazilian Government Plans and The Paradigm Change: from Transport to Urban Mobility and Accessibility. The fragmented word "de(en)velopment" reveals the need of the expansion capital paradigm to reduce social practices that focus on basic human needs. That's the way car culture has expanded, taking up space on roads and in urban life. Even though car culture is an option that does not solve the mobility problems of the majority, society invests mostly in this form of transport, opposite to equity and citizenship, putting in check the social value of transport. Changing paradigms of urban mobility requires giving priority to public transport, walking and cycling. It is a matter of citizenship, social justice, sustainability and rational use of urban space. But there are barriers to this change, bringing the necessity of treating sustainable urban mobility as a product to be assumed, and social marketing should therefore be used because the culture favorable to private, motorized transport is deeply rooted in today's society. To give political support to the government for the implementation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility policy, and especially the cycling policy, it is necessary that the people accept, defend, and demand change. There is an increasing number of bicycle users as a preferential transportation mode, and cycling advocacy groups in Brazil. The visibility of this segment of society, although increasing, has clearly not been sufficient to put pressure on the government to bring about more significant changes. But it is understood that despite all the problems that social movements face in their daily struggles, they are responsible for social change, and they continue to be the developers of a critical consciousness
