Wielka Wojna i męskość peryferii [rec. Monika Szczepaniak: Habitus żołnierski w literaturze i kulturze polskiej w kontekście Wielkiej Wojny. Kraków: Towarzystwo Autorów i Wydawców Prac Naukowych Universitas, 2017, ss. 400.]
The article discusses Monika Szczepaniak monograph: Habitus żołnierski w literaturze i kulturze polskiej w kontekście Wielkiej Wojny [Habitus Soldier in Polish Literature and Culture in the Context of the Great War]. Following the changes taking place in the Polish habitus at the beginning of the 20th century, the author analyzes the strategies of creating a hegemonic normative militarized masculinity, which in its Polish variant refers to the heroic Romantic-Sarmatian models. In this context, the author discusses minority narratives, presenting various non-heroic masculinity superseded by dominant discourses. The article discusses Monika Szczepaniak monograph: Habitus żołnierski w literaturze i kulturze polskiej w kontekście Wielkiej Wojny [Habitus Soldier in Polish Literature and Culture in the Context of the Great War].
representar a temática. Por último, realiza-se uma análise das crônicas em questão, na qual
constam as relações que elas apresentam com a pesquisa. The present work aims to perceive the presence of prejudice in relation to the deaf subjects
during their insertion in the social environment. Therefore, it was necessary to carry out
research and readings that would bring someone who had actually lived this experience. The
experience of prejudice in relation to deafness is found in the portraits made by Paula
Pfeifer's book, Crônicas da Surdez, published in 2013. In the first chapter, the conceptions of
each theme and what is intended when analyzing the work are addressed. In the second part,
the crônica is presented as a literary genre, as it was the genre chosen by the author to bring
her biography and report her experiences. Therefore, we sought to understand it better, how
its structure and characteristics work, in order to understand why the author made this
choice. Thenceforth, the book by Paula Pfeifer was presented, who the author is, a little
about her life and why she was chosen to represent the theme. Finally, an analysis of the
crônicas is developed, in which the relationships they present with the research are set out
Intercomparison of simulations using 4 WRF microphysical schemes with dual-polarization data for a German squall line
Simulations of a squall line system which occurred on 12 August 2004 near Munich, Germany are performed using a fine grid version of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with five different microphysical schemes. Synthetic dual polarization observations are created from the model output and compared with detailed observations gathered by the DLR polarimetric radar POLDIRAD located near Munich. Synthetic polarimetric radar scans are derived from the model forecasts employing the polarimetric radar forward operator SynPolRad. Evaluations of the microphysical parameterization schemes are carried out comparing Plan Position Indicator (PPI) and Range Height Indicator (RHI) scans of reflectivity and the spatial distribution of hydrometeor types. The hydrometeor types are derived applying a hydrometeor classification scheme to the observed and simulated polarimetric radar quantities. Furthermore, the Ebert-McBride contiguous rain area method of verification is tested in a variety of ways on the reflectivity output from the simulations. It is found that all five schemes overestimate reflectivity in the domain, particularly in the stratiform region of the convective system. All four schemes including graupel as a hydrometeor type produce too much of it. Differences are seen among the schemes in their depiction of reflectivity in the convective line and their representation of radar bright bands
Validating precipitation forecasts using remote sensor synergy: A case study approach
Several types of remote sensing data are applied synergistically to evaluate the chain of microphysical
processes leading to precipitation in a high-resolution numerical weather prediction model. The data provides
information relating to (i) cloud-top temperature and optical depth (SEVERI), (ii) ice cloud amount (AMSUB),
(iii) type and amount of precipitation particles (polarimetric radar), and (iv) surface precipitation
(raingauge-calibrated radar data). Forecasts are produced by the COSMO-DE model of the German weather
service, with a horizontal resolution of 2.8 km. The comparison with data is done in a model-to-observation
framework, that is, forward operators are applied to the model output to produce synthetic data sets that
can be directly compared to the observations. Additional diagnostics based on diurnal cycle and system
tracking are also considered. Two case studies over Germany from the summer of 2006 are examined. The
first case is dominated by widespread stratiform precipitation. Together the various data sets show that the
model overestimates the amount of high cloud, while underestimating the concentration of ice scatterers
and overestimating reflectivity and differential reflectivity (ZDR). This indicates errors in both the amount
and the size distributions of cloud and precipitation particles in the model’s microphysical parameterization.
In the second case a narrow band of convective precipitation is embedded in a cold front, with significant
modulation by the diurnal cycle. The model fails to show a significant diurnal cycle in cloud amount, and
the timing and duration of convective cells is incorrect. In this case, both the microphysical parameterization,
and errors in the interaction of the simulated front with the orography of the Alps appear to contribute. These
results demonstrate the potential of combinations of remote sensing data for model evaluation, although a
long-term trial will be required to determine whether the errors seen in the case studies are characteristic for

Self-Assembly of Ternary Insulin-Polyethylenimine (PEI)-DNA Nanoparticles for Enhanced Gene Delivery and Expression in Alveolar Epithelial Cells
Enhancing gene delivery and expression in alveolar epithelial cells could offer the opportunity for the treatment of acquired and inherited lung diseases. Here, we show that particle adsorption of human insulin (INS) is capable of increasing plasmid DNA (pDNA) delivery from polyethylenimine (PEI) nanoparticles specifically in alveolar epithelial cells. INS receptors were predominantly detected on alveolar but not on bronchial epithelial cells. INS was adsorbed on the surface of PEI gene vectors by spontaneous self-assembly resulting in ternary PEI−pDNA−INS nanoparticles. Surface adsorption was confirmed by particle size, surface charge, and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) measurements. INS adsorption significantly increased gene expression of PEI−pDNA nanoparticles up to 16-fold on alveolar epithelial cells but not on bronchial epithelial cells. This increased gene expression was INS receptor specific. Our results demonstrate that targeting INS receptor for gene delivery in alveolar epithelial cells represents a promising approach for enhanced gene delivery and expression
