Taming the Renewables: Actors’ Innovation in Improving the Utilisation of Biogas for Everyday Use in Agricultural Setting

    No full text
Biogas development in Indonesia has reached a large number of users since 2009 and the technology has had a successful adoption rate at the local level. However, the ways that users develop and adopt innovation with regards to this useful technology has been under-researched. This study aims to address the innovations being undertaken by biogas users; these innovations are a decentralising process of technical knowledge that is based on users’ interpretations of pre-existing social and cultural values they experience in everyday life. Through innovation, users can demonstrate a greater sense of ownership, which leads to them feeling more able to integrate the biogas into their lives, including its incorporation into agricultural activities at home. The main recommendation drawn from this research is that users’ ideas and knowledge, as well as the social-cultural values underlying their everyday lives, should be taken into account in order to ensure successful construction processes and that they be understood as co-shaping elements that will enable a smooth immersion of the users and the technology.Article History: Received November 26th 2015; Received in revised form January 15th 2016; Accepted January 26th 2016; Available online How to Cite This Article: Alam, M. For over decades in Indonesian public high school, freshmen orientation program in form of school initiation has been perceived as process that leads to altruistic behavior; consisted of solidarity, closely group interaction, deeper understanding on school’s living values, and internal norms. However, its implementation is currently raising many protests of educational experts and scholars as well as become a point of vocal in public areas because violent actions are profoundly practiced as ways to infitrate those altruism and potentially inflct another precedent thought that the activities could be alternative for individual’ growth in near future. Accordingly, this research conducted in one of public school in Yogyakarta province attempts to analyze the involvement of school stakeholders throughout the ongoing process in the school initiation and to identify why misleading concept of education remains applied by school’ stakeholders. Therefore, the fial recommendation of this research is subjected not only to the school stakeholders, but also relevant boards in the government, where the school aparatus should highly involve parents in making decision and implement accountable action in disseminating information pertinent to education process, the relevant board of education in governmental sector should also increase the partnership with local non-governmental organization who has areas of working in the peace and education to seek and design relevant alternative programs for the sake of eradicating violent actions in the school. Local community situated in the school’s surroundings should be also actively involved by respective schools for some of community development-related activities. The last mentioned recommendation is purposively to have students understand deeper and comprehend throroughly the use of knowledge that they learn at school for society

Abstract. The irresistible global phenomenon of climate change is widely known as an emerging challenge that threatens the sustainability of public life. This article examines climate change complexities in urban areas of Indonesia, particularly those that are the result of massive urban infrastructure development. In Indonesia, urban infrastructure development has been observed to have reduced the number of open green spaces, resulting in increased temperatures, primarily in city areas. This environmental issue is exacerbated by the presence of prolonged drought due to El Niño. Several studies have demonstrated that climate change causes mental disorders among urban residents, characterized by emotional and cultural disengagement from their place of residence, clinically called 'solastalgia'. This term was coined by Professor Glenn Albrecht, an Australian environmentalist, formerly based in Newcastle NSW. This study examined the concept of solastalgia through ethnographic interviews with five young people who have permanently lived in the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia for more than 20 years. This study captures their personal solastalgia experiences resulting from climate change complexities. Solastalgia, as confirmed by the respondents, covers various socio-cultural symptoms like social tension, immobility, distress, and future insecurity. The narratives of the respondents indicate that climate change in addition to urban infrastructure development has uprooted their belongingness to the city, valued by them as a space for communal cultural identity formation. Subsequently, after analyzing their subjective experiences, this study confirms that spatial development of the urban area of Yogyakarta in favor of the economy neglects the future of young people.Keywords.  solastalgia, climate change, urban, Yogyakarta City.

Kata kunci : teknologi, mitigasi, biogas, teori domestikasi The emergence of biogas technology in Indonesia is invasive after the rising of climate change mitigation discourse by scientists. Methane gas as results of animal wastage in Indonesia has withdrawn technologists to apply an appropriate yet affordable technology for rural household, namely biogas. However, nowadays research on biogas barely investigate how such cooking technology is made to be integrated in the household space. By using the domestication theory, this paper is an attempt to shed particular lights on distinctive social stages of biogas technology in being immersed into the life of household

For community living in Least Developing Countries (LDC) climate change has imposed recent pressure on the locals. The impact it causes is also exacerbated by the inadequate infrastructure and regional policy in those countries. With the focus of interest in the case of Tuvalu, one of LDCs located in Western Oceania which clearly encounters rapid destruction due to climatic events, this paper presents the natural changes and living conditions of Tuvaluan inhabitants. Those calamities are caused predominantly by sea-level rise, warmer temperatures, unprecedented cyclones and contaminated water. Benchmarked with other small islands stretching across the Pacific Ocean, the finding demonstrates that Tuvalu has ignoredinternational concerns due to its critical situations that are causedby the government and local community members.  </jats:p
