    A reliable system for the transformation of cantaloupe charentais melon (Cucumis melo L. var. cantalupensis) leading to a majority of diploid regenerants

    An efficient system of transformation leading to a majority of transformed diploid plants from leaf explants of Cucumis melo L. var. Cantalupensis (cv. Védrantais) was developed. Several regeneration protocols using cotyledon or leaf explants were analysed with particular emphasis on the regeneration efficiency and the ploidy level of the regenerated melon plants. The use of leaf explants excised from 10 day-old seedlings, cultured in Murashige and Skoog's medium supplemented with 1 mM 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 1 mM 6-(g,g-dimethylallylamino)-purine (2iP), resulted in a high regeneration frequency (73%). In these conditions, more than 84% of the regenerated plants were found to be diploid. Addition of an Agrobacterium-mediated transformation step did not significantly change the percentage (81.8%) of diploid plants regenerated. This protocol was successfully used to produce diploid transgenic melon plants expressing the antisense ACC oxidase gene, encoding ACC oxidase which catalyses the last step of ethylene biosynthesis. Ethylene production and ACC oxidase activity of the leaf explants from transgenic plants was reduced by more than 80% as compared to the control untransformed tissues.     O uso preferencial da irrigação por gotejamento na cultura do melão (Cucumis melo L.) tem ocasionado uma crescente demanda de fertirrigação nessa cultura. A aplicação dessa tecnologia tem como um dos principais obstáculos a não-disponibilidade de recomendações capazes de viabilizá-la na prática. Este trabalho teve por objetivo definir níveis de nitrogênio (N) e de potássio (K) que maximizem racionalmente a produtividade do meloeiro sob irrigação por gotejamento em solos de textura arenosa. Foram avaliados quatro níveis de N (0, 60, 120 e 180 kg.ha -1) e quatro de K (130, 200, 270 e 340 kg.ha –1) em um delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso em arranjo fatorial 4 x 4, com três repetições. Houve efeito significativo apenas para o N na produtividade total, comercial e não comercial do meloeiro, e os rendimentos da cultura aumentaram com o aumento dos níveis de N. A dosagem de 120 kg.ha-1 de N aplicado via água de irrigação foi a mais adequada para a cultura do meloeiro para as condições químicas do solo e edafoclimáticas da área experimental. Os níveis de potássio do solo não permitiram verificar os efeitos das doses do nutriente aplicado via água na produtividade do melão, e a interação entre os níveis de nitrogênio e potássio não tiveram efeito significativo na produtividade da cultura. As características físicas e químicas de qualidade de frutos não foram influenciadas pelos níveis de N e K utilizados

The author shows that, for n sufficiently large, the index of the inclusion An=(Q⊗A2n)∗A2nA1n⊂(Q⊗A2n+1)∗A2n+1A1n+1=An+1 is equal to λ (here ∗ denotes the reduced, amalgamated free product of the algebras in question). Using the random matrix model of Voiculescu, he proves that if Q is the von Neumann algebra L(F∞) of the free group with infinitely many generators, then An is isomorphic to L(F∞). The two facts together imply the existence, for any λ in the Jones discrete series, of an irreducible subfactor of L(F∞) of index λ. This constitutes the first example of a nonhyperfinite, non-Γ II1 factor such that its Jones invariant is fully computable (the existence of nonirreducible subfactors of L(F∞) for any index ≥4 is a simple consequence of known results)

    Telah dilakukan penelitian Ketertarikan Spodoptera litura F. terhadap papan perangkap berwarna di area tanaman melon (Cucumis melo L.).Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui ketertarikan Spodoptera litura F. terhadap papan perangkap berwarna (biru, putih, hijau, kuning). Penelitian dilakukan di Desa Bayuran Kelurahan Sumber Agung , Jetis Bantul. Pelaksanaan penelitian mulai 5 Mei 2008 hingga 12 Juli 2008. Luas area tanaman melon 600 m2 . Pengambilan sampel Spodoptera litura F. menggunakan metode papan perangkap berwarna (biru, putih, hijau, kuning). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jumlah rerata individu tertinggi sebesar 5,14 /minggu (hst) pada papan perangkap warna hijau, dan serangan tertinggi Spodoptera saat tanaman melon berumur 53 (hst) dengan rerata kombinasi warna 5,45/minggu (hst)

    Phylogenetics of Cucumis (Cucurbitaceae)

    Background: Melon, Cucumis melo, and cucumber, C. sativus, are among the most widely cultivated crops worldwide. Cucumis, as traditionally conceived, is geographically centered in Africa, with C. sativus and C. hystrix thought to be the only Cucumis species in Asia. This taxonomy forms the basis for all ongoing Cucumis breeding and genomics efforts. We tested relationships among Cucumis and related genera based on DNA sequences from chloroplast gene, intron, and spacer regions (rbcL, matK, rpl20-rps12, trnL, and trnL-F), adding nuclear internal transcribed spacer sequences to resolve relationships within Cucumis. Results: Analyses of combined chloroplast sequences (4,375 aligned nucleotides) for 123 of the 130 genera of Cucurbitaceae indicate that the genera Cucumella, Dicaelospermum, Mukia, Myrmecosicyos, and Oreosyce are embedded within Cucumis. Phylogenetic trees from nuclear sequences for these taxa are congruent, and the combined data yield a well-supported phylogeny. The nesting of the five genera in Cucumis greatly changes the natural geographic range of the genus, extending it throughout the Malesian region and into Australia. The closest relative of Cucumis is Muellerargia, with one species in Australia and Indonesia, the other in Madagascar. Cucumber and its sister species, C. hystrix, are nested among Australian, Malaysian, and Western Indian species placed in Mukia or Dicaelospermum and in one case not yet formally described. Cucumis melo is sister to this Australian/Asian clade, rather than being close to African species as previously thought. Molecular clocks indicate that the deepest divergences in Cucumis, including the split between C. melo and its Australian/Asian sister clade, go back to the mid-Eocene. Conclusion: Based on congruent nuclear and chloroplast phylogenies we conclude that Cucumis comprises an old Australian/Asian component that was heretofore unsuspected. Cucumis sativus evolved within this Australian/Asian clade and is phylogenetically far more distant from C. melo than implied by the current morphological classification

(Figures 11A, 15D) Diagnosis The male differs from those of M. atlantica, M. purpurata, M. xavante sp. n., and M. mapinguari sp. n. by the minute medial protruding process of S4, with a triangular profile in lateral view; from M. guarani sp. n. by the dark brown integument with metallic green reflections, and the dark brown metasoma with purple tints. Description Male. (15) Scape with diameter gradually enlarging toward the apex. (16) Flagellum blackish; F1–F11 not differing in diameter; F2 about two-thirds of F 3 in length. (17) Metanotum with integument, in dorsal view, not hidden by short plumose pillosity. (18) Basal area of metapostnotum blackish, its length 0.6× that of metanotum; smooth and without longitudinal rugulosities along its surface (Figure 11A). (19) Metepisternum with sparse pilosity, integument visible through pilosity; posterior upper margin of metepisternum unmodified, lacking a velvety process. The ‘Karitiana’ experienced a brutal demographic decline after contact with the whites.     PERTUMBUHAN DAN HASIL TANAMAN MELON (Cucumis melo L.) DENGAN PEMBERIAN DOSIS PUPUK KOTORAN AYAM PADA ULTISOL Abstrak Tanaman melon dapat tumbuh pada dataran rendah hingga menengah. Penelitian ini membahas tentang Pertumbuhan dan Hasil Tanaman Melon (Cucumis melo L.) dengan Pemberian Dosis Pupuk Kotoran Ayam pada Ultisol. Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan di Rumah Kaca, Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Andalas Padang yang dimulai dari bulan Januari sampai April 2020. Rancangan yang digunakan adalah rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) yang terdiri dari 5 taraf perlakuan yaitu (10 ton/ha, 20 ton/ha, 30 ton/ha, 40 ton/ha, 50 ton/ha) dengan 4 ulangan. Data dari hasil pengamatan dianalisis dengan uji F pada taraf 5%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian berbagai dosis pupuk kotoran ayam memberikan pengaruh yang sama terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman melon pada ultisol. PLANT WITH THE DOSAGE OF CHICKEN FERTILIZER ON ULTISOL Abstrack Melon plants can grow in low to medium plains. This study discusses the Growth and Yield of Melon (Cucumis melo L.) by Giving Dose of Chicken Manure on Ultisols. This research was conducted at the Greenhouse, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University, Padang, starting from January to April 2020. The design used was a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 5 levels of treatment, namely (10 tonnes / ha, 20 tonnes / ha , 30 tonnes / ha, 40 tonnes / ha, 50 tonnes / ha) with 4 replications. Data from the observations were analyzed with the F test at the 5% level.
