    GIS-mapping model of low entalphy geothermal potential in Southern Italy (VIGOR PROJECT)

    Low enthalpy geothermics is based on the exploitation of the thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth by means of ground source heat pump systems (GSHP). These systems, which take advantage from the fact that the ground temperature is almost constant, are able to exchange heat with the ground with relatively shallow boreholes (depth typically about 100 m and generally lower than 200 m). The aim of the study, carried out in the frame of the geothermal assessment of the VIGOR Project, is to create a digital cartographic instrument, based on Geographic Information System (GIS). This outcome is not only devoted to geothermal aims, but also open to all geological uses. The resulting database will be easily accessible, upgradeable, and able to synthesize geological knowledge of the underground thermal properties. In this way, a useful tool for territorial planning and environmental control is obtained and will be made available. Knowledge about the physical and thermal parameters has to be supported by thematic maps. The work done suggests a methodological approach able to define the features that mainly influence the ability of the ground to “geoexchange”. Geological and thermodynamic properties are recorded in a dedicated geo-database. The corresponding digital thematic maps can be combined, by means of a suitable algorithm, to determine the geothermal potential map. Examples from Apulia region are discussed

    Modelling MECA scenarios using Brahms and KAoS

    In this report we present a simulation of a MECA scenario, powered by Brahms and KAoS. To achieve this, the KAoS/Brahms bridge is developed, which allows agents in a Brahms multi-agent system to query KAoS policies. With the KAoS/Brahms bridge at hand, the MECA project is used as context for a scenario modelled in Brahms. The scenario is scripted to contain various situations in which Brahms’ work practice approach interacts with KAoS’ topdown specification of rules. The outcome of these interactions directly influences the outcome of the scenario as a whole. By including an actual human being in the simulation, the scenario can also be used to assess man-machine interaction between this human subject and the other agents. The human subject can assume the role of one of the actors, while the other actors remain simulated. Seeds were usedwerespecies genotype of IPB C9, which is the freshly harvested from pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)collection of the GeneticsandPlant Breeding Division, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). Vigor test methods arenatural deterioration test at room temperature in controlled humidity (RH 90-95%) compared to 4 Accelerated Aging (AA) methods using hot water (60ºC), methanol 20%, ethanol 20% and termperature test at 40ºC. This first experiment aimed ataccelerated aging methods for testing seed vigor in relation to seed storability of pepper seed.The best method was selected using analysis of variance, coeficient of variance, regression dan t student analysis. Based on these analysis is was found that AA methods using methanol 20% and time periods of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours, is the best method to determine pepper seed vigor in relation to seed storability. The second experiment was designed to evaluate rapid ageing methods of methanol 20% for 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours which is the first stage of the experiment results on some of the pepper seeds genotypes including hybrid, non hybrid, local, introduction, and a great chili seeds produced in year 2009 and 2010. Seed used was non hybrid seed as much as 4 genotypes of production in 2009 and 4 genotype seed of production in 2010. Hybrid seeds used were 10 genotypes of production in 2009 and 8 genotypes of production in 2010. Data analysis used were analysis of the slope of the regression line which is the angle resulting from the comparison of the ordinate and the axis. Information obtained based on test results of the accelerated aging method by using methanol 20% for 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours, that the shelf life of seed vigor in relation to storability of production in 2009 is better than from the production in 2010. Pepper seeds evaluated, the hybrid seeds, have same seed vigor in relation to seed storability with the non hybrid pepper seeds, as well as seed vigor in relation to seed storability between local vs introduction seeds, and the seed vigor in relation to seed storability of great chili vs chili pepper seeds.The third experiment was to achieve a method of selection in helping pepper breeding programs to produce high seeds vigor in relation to storability. Parents used was pepper seeds are high yielding varieties of pepper seed collections from research by IPB genetic and plant breeding division. There was no maternal effect on pepper seed vigor in relation to storability in power germinated, growth speed and electrical conductivity benchmarks, contrary there was maternal effect in length of radicle and length of hipocotyl benchmarks.     TCC (graduação em Agronomia) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências Agrárias, 2011O trabalho foi conduzido no Laboratório de Sementes da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, no Centro de Ciências Agrárias, tendo como objetivo de determinar qual a etapa de beneficiamento promove maiores danos às sementes de milho, bem como qual foi o comportamento das variedades durante o processo. Foram utilizadas sementes de uma variedade crioula (Pixurum 05 - V1) e duas variedades de polinização aberta (SCS 155 Catarina - V2 e SCS 154 Fortuna - V3). A amostragem de sementes foi realizada em cinco pontos de coleta dentro da Unidade de Beneficiamento de Sementes (UBS) da cooperativa Oestebio, sendo eles: recepção - testemunha, após a pré-limpeza (P2), após a secagem (P3), após a armazenagem em silo (P4) e na pré-embalagem (P5). As avaliações de viabilidade e vigor (germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, frio, IVG e tetrazólio), umidade, pureza física e peso de mil sementes, foram baseadas nas Regras para Análise de Sementes. Na fase da recepção das amostras as sementes da variedade V1 apresentaram 14% de umidade, a V2 18,5% e a variedade V3 19,5%, após o beneficiamento a umidade das variedades foi de 12,4%, 13,5% e 12,4% respectivamente. As cultivares apresentaram comportamento diferente no processo de beneficiamento sendo que a variedade V1 foi mais estável durante o processo uma vez que sua umidade esteve constante durante todo o beneficiamento. As etapas de limpeza e classificação foram eficientes na padronização da pureza física apenas para as variedades V1 e V3 e do peso de mil sementes para as três variedades, destacando-se a variedade V1 como a de maior peso. O processamento na UBS não promoveu danos que afetassem o comprimento do coleóptilo e da radícula e no teste de germinação apenas a variedade V2 atingiu os padrões mínimos para comercialização e somente no ponto P5. Os testes de frio e tetrazólio não foram eficientes para detectar diferenças no vigor entre as três variedades e entre os pontos de coleta, no entanto o teste de envelhecimento acelerado mostrou a variedade V3 como mais sensível. A maioria dos danos e alterações na viabilidade e no vigor ocorreu em decorrência da secagem e o armazenamento no silo pulmão (P3 e P4 respectivamente), devido ao elevado teor de umidade com que as sementes das variedades V2 e V3 chegaram à UBS. Após o ponto P5 todas as variedades comportam-se de forma semelhante apontando eficiência na etapa final do beneficiamento, havendo a necessidade de adequação nos pontos P3 e P4 e especial atenção ao teor de umidade desde a colheita até o beneficiamento para evitar a perda da qualidade fisiológica das semente

    Methicillin-resistant staphylococci are disseminated all over the world and are frequent causes of health care- and community-associated infections. Methicillin-resistant strains typically carry the acquired mecA gene that encodes a low-affinity penicillin-binding protein (PBP), designated PBP2a or PBP2′. In most strains, mecA is part of a chromosomally integrated mobile genetic element called staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec). The mecA gene is widely disseminated among Staphylococcus aureus and other staphylococcal species, and its expression is essential for the methicillin-resistant phenotype. Recently, mecA gene homologues that are only distantly related to mecA have been identified in the genomes of staphylococci and some related bacterial species (Table 1). So far, four groups of mecA homologues have been described based on their degree of homology to the earliest identified mecA gene. We believe that this diversity warrants a new naming system based on phylogenetic principles which can also serve as a guideline for the reporting of additional novel mecA homologues that may be identified in the future
