This thesis aims to analyze the vain attempt of the search for female freedom through the rebellion of Emma Bovary, the famous romantic and anti-conformist heroine created by the French author Gustave Flaubert, against submission, as a woman, of the rigid moral and social conventions imposed by patriarchal society. The first chapter focuses on the contemptuous criticism of bourgeois society in the historical context of the nineteenth century and the denunciation of the novel for immorality that brings the writer to trial before the court. The second chapter examines the sociability of the flaubertiennes girls, the social roles imposed on women of the time through the physical and psychological description of the protagonist Emma. Finally, in the third chapter we find the first love encounters between lovers and how Emma has managed to influence contemporary female readers, especially Annie Ernaux. The figure of Emma becomes a symbol of female emancipation as she struggles to assert herself individually thanks to her desires and her passions, despite her tragic fate, highlighting some power dynamics that emphasize the difference between the two sexes

Through the testimonies left by the cardinal Achille Silvestrini to her, the Author of this essay reconstructs the main features of the life and personality of the cardinal Domenico Tardini, sixty years after his death. Tardini was side by side with Eugenio Pacelli, as the latter was Secretary of State of Pope Pio xi; then he became prosecretary of State of Pope Pio xii and finally Secretary of State of Pope John xxiii. The cardinal Silvestrini was called by Tardini to work at the Secretariat of State since 1953; and in this first-hand account he tells how his master, and he himself with him, faced the most important events and choices of the Holy See’s diplomacy: from the threat of the totalitarianisms to the World War ii, from the Cold War to the detente policy. The account leads to a more and more global scenario where we can see the warning signs of the Ostpolitik of the Holy See in Europe and then towards China. In the end, Domenico Tardini embodies the transition of the Holy See’s diplomacy from a model still longing for Christianitas to a new one, more dialoguing and open-minded

The growing prominence of Sub-Saharan African authors in the global literary domain has garnered substantial interest in narratives that delve into the intersections of identity, migration, culture, and multilingualism. Aiming at investigating these literary texts and the publishing market context in which they are disseminated, this research project focuses on analysing the distinctive characteristics that define the hybrid and multilingual writings of seven Nigerian authors and one non-binary author: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Taiye Selasi, Yejide Kilanko, Sefi Atta, Helen Oyeyemi, Akwaeke Emezi, Chinelo Okparanta, and Chika Unigwe. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates studies on transnational migration, transnational feminism, stylistics and the publishing industry, this study endeavours to highlight how the authors under examination contribute to presenting a complex depiction of contemporary migratory phenomena, characterised by multiple facets emerging from multiple senses of affiliation and cultural belonging. Building on such premises, the doctoral thesis is structured into three parts. The first section examines contemporary fiction produced by authors of the African diaspora residing in Europe or the United States by drawing upon studies conducted on migration and transnational feminist school of thought. The texts analysed in this section include Americanah (2013) by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ghana Must Go by Taiye Selasi (2013), A Good Name (2021) by Yedije Kilanko, A Bit of a Difference (2013) by Sefi Atta, The Icarus Girl (2005) by Helen Oyeyemi and Freshwater (2018) by Akawaeke Emezi. The second part of the research focuses on selected short stories in The Thing Around Your Neck (2013) by Adichie, Happiness Like Water (2013) by Okparanta and Better Late Than Never (2019) by Unigwe, illustrating how the authors appropriate, incorporate and reshape the various linguistic registers available to them. Drawing specifically on linguistic-stylistic studies conducted on postcolonial stylistics and authenticity, the analysis highlights how the convergence of English, Nigerian English, Nigerian Pidgin and the authors’ ethnic languages becomes a tool for expressing the complexity of the multilingual context navigated by their characters and the hybrid postcolonial Nigerian identity. The concluding part of the study aims to locate these works and, more generally, modern literary texts within their contemporary socio-cultural and editorial context by highlighting the power dynamics that characterise the Euro-American literary market and their impact on the themes, production and dissemination of Nigerian literature

In 1857, Gustave Flaubert published the novel Madame Bovary. For this work he was sued for offending public morals. The work has an intriguing protagonist. Emma Bovary, a character that shook many in the mid-nineteenth century. A character who barely speaks, but deeply feels every moment of his story. Emma Bovary drew the attention of the psychoanalysts and it was inspired by the bovarysme, a theme that seems retrograde, but explains much of the contemporary. My goal is to analyze this highly controversial character, Emma Bovary. It has a singular peculiarity very well worked and constructed by Gustave Flaubert, that portrays the life of a provincial, french and bourgeois woman of century XIX before a mediocre and moralistic society that valued only the economic and social ascension. This analysis has as main objective to evaluate the context that influenced the author in the construction of the feminine character of the work and to identify the social, psychological and historical aspects based on a patriarchal society of the XIX century. And with this, I aim to understand the ideal of society that we have to this day, a society built by the State and the Church, through the eyes of a woman built in the middle of a class that was consolidated, the bourgeoisie

The paper examines the criticism on Jane Austen’s novel ‘Emma’. In the theoretical part the author provides an insight into the criticism of Jane Austen’s contemporaries, overview of the twentieth century critical reception of the novelist and the discussion of the rise of modern scholarship on Jane Austen. In the empirical part the author examines feminist criticism of the novel and investigates the main directions of it, analyses the criticism of the novel ‘Emma’ from the perspective of Bildungsroman, makes a comparative analysis of twentieth century and modern criticism of the novel ‘Emma’. In addition the author of the paper compares and analyses several essays and publications of important critics of nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first century and gives an evaluation to critical approaches used by the critics. The results of the study indicate that modern criticism adds more aspects to the total understanding of Jane Austen as a literary figure and her novels than earlier critical approaches. Modern criticism looks on the novels using the knowledge of past studies, but adds the combination of close reading, contextual and sociological approach. Moreover, modern criticism studies the novel through cultural, political, social and other various lenses of the modern time, which open and explain the ongoing popularity of Jane Austen and topicality of her novels. The findings can be used as a basis for further study of critical approaches on classic English literature
