Abstract: Organizational performance is acknowledged as a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. Previous works on multi-dimensional classification schemes of organizational performance have tried to provide general guidelines on how to conceptualize and measure performance. However, these efforts have lacked internal consistency and collective exhaustiveness. The purpose of this study is to propose a new multi-dimensional analytical model of organizational performance, which is developed upon previous works but is expected to correct their flaws. So, proceeding from the literature review and on the basis of a conceptual classification method, a Multi-dimensional Analytical Model of Organizational Performance was developed by means of the aggregation of attributes, properties and dimensions. Finally, the model was used to accomplish a comparative, categorical, cross-national, longitudinal, descriptive-quantitative and inferential-qualitative content-analysis of Brazilian and Foreign empirical studies from Organizational Studies and Strategy areas, published from 2005 to 2007. The study concluded that, in the context of these areas, the concept of performance reveals a multi-dimensional homologous structure, of polysemic, polymorphic and polyfunctional nature. The results also show diferences and similarities between Brazilian and Foreign researchers'use of attributes, properties and dimensions. This study also extends earlier works by increasing the conceptual base of more empirically-based classifications of organizational performance dimension

Process philosophy's potential contributions to innovation process research within organization studies

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to discuss process philosophy's potential contributions to understanding and investigation of innovation processes associated with organizational contexts. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is a theoretical piece that examines the concept of process philosophy by relating it to the relevant literature and use of examples. Findings: In particular, the authors develop some ideas and encourage future discussion around two aspects: process philosophy-oriented conceptualizations of innovation processes and process philosophy-oriented methods of investigation about innovation processes. The authors conclude that more process philosophy-oriented research of innovation processes must be conceptually multidimensional and methodologically performative. Originality/value: There is a recent claim about a "process turn" within organization studies, which is partly represented by attempts to develop and apply a deeper meaning of process. The presentation of the concept is novel, and does add to the literature. These aspects provide clarification regarding implications of thinking and enquiring procedurally into innovation processes

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Strategic organizational adaptation under multiple theoretical lenses: sudy og Weg Between 1961-2013

Studies on strategic organizational adaptation are related to the development and application of descriptive and explanatory theories of strategic options and the degree of potential organizational mobilization in response to internal and external elements potentially influential of strategic decision making. The main objective of this research was to analyze the individual and joint explanatory power of organizational strategic adaptation theories, based on changes in the strategic content of a large Brazilian organization over 40 years of history. Methodologically, it is a qualitative, descriptive and analytical study. Secondary data were collected in books about the corporate history and information available in official media about the organization. The results demonstrated complementarities between the theories used to explain the organizational strategic adaptation phenomenon. Among the key findings, it appears that the understanding of the organizational strategic adaptation process in longitudinal perspective is a phenomenon that requires multiple theoretical lenses. Moreover, it results from the interaction between internal and external elements of the organization

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
