Oral History Interview - Barbara Carson
No full textBarbara Carson began teaching at Rollins in 1973, where over the course of twenty-eight years, she distinguished herself as one of the faculty’s pre-eminent professors and valuable contributors to the community.
A native to Florida, Carson received her primary education in Cocoa, Florida. She studied at Brevard Junior College for a year and then at Florida State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. Four years later, Carson graduated from John Hopkins University with a Ph.D. in English. After teaching for two years and completing a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Carson accepted a teaching position at University of Massachusetts Amherst and then at Valencia Community College before joining the Rollins faculty in 1973.
While at Rollins, Carson taught courses in freshman composition, as well as in British and American Literature. She also served as chair of the English department, participated in the GLCA and ACS teaching workshops, and took an active role in the development of the Academic Honor Code. For her outstanding contributions to the college, she was selected twice for the Hugh F. McKean Award, named Author Davis Fellow by her peers, received the Hamilton Holt School’s Distinguished Teacher Award, and in 1994, named to the Theodore Bruce and Barbara Lawrence Alfond Chair of English.
Carson retired from the College in 2007, but as one student stated, “Like the giant oak tables in Orlando Hall, will be a permanent fixture at Rollins.

The impact of renewable energy systems on local sustainability
No full textThe purpose of the paper is to discuss and assess the impact of renewable energy, RE, generation on sustainable communities, with a specific focus on employment impact. In recent years, local authorities have been involved in the energy planning process due to the site-specific nature of renewable production and thanks to their nearer connection to citizens. Four small and medium-size sustainable communities belonging to Marche region, in central Italy, have been analysed. The work forecasts the employment generated by the RE capacity defined by two different energy scenarios: 1) the 'business as usual' scenario with a 20% CO2 emission reduction target by 2020, where all the energy policies suggested by Sustainable Energy Action Plans have been considered; 2) the 'potential' scenario with a 50% CO2 emission reduction target by 2050. Results show that the spreading of renewable energy, as expected, can increase local jobs, although the high investments required and problems connected to the impact on the grid have to be considered in the analysis of the global economic effect
A Self-discovery Voyage: Taylor's Search for Self-Identity in "The Bean Trees" by Barbara Kingsolver
No full textWestern literature has conventionally been concerned with male characters and their lonely journeys, however, Barbara Kingsolver has escaped the constraints of the genre. Hence, the aim of this paper is to analyze the main character’s self-identity search in The Bean Trees. In order to accomplish this, first, some background information about Barbara Kingsolver is introduced as well as a general explanation about the ecofeminist theory and its influence in the author. The paper deals with the building process of Taylor’s identity regarding four principal themes: gender, community, ethnicity, and nature. In each section, secondary sources and close reading are combined in order to analyze the role of the main characters of this novel. Lastly, the conclusion rounds up how the previously mentioned themes have influenced Taylor’s self-identity and addresses her development throughout her journey
