    No full text
This research intended to study the operational practices of selected private higher education institutions in Agusan del Norte. Specifically, it sought to determine the extent to which operational practices are observed by the HEIs in the areas of: forecasting, enrolment promotional activities, capacity planning and expansion, and facilities and equipment upgrading. Using the descriptive survey method and with the aid of a researcher-made questionnaire, the following findings were established: 1) the practices of HEIs in the areas of forecasting, enrolment and promotional activities, and capacity planning and expansion were rated to a great extent, while the facilities and equipment upgrading was rated to a very great extent; 2) there is no significant difference in responses among schools using Friedman’s test; and 3) there is a significant difference in certain areas between positions of respondents using ANOVA test

Specific and General Information Sharing Among Academic Scientists

    No full text
We provide theoretical and empirical evidence on the factors that influence the willingness of academic scientists to share research results. We distinguish between two types of sharing, specific sharing in which a researcher shares her data or materials with another and general sharing in which scientists report results to the entire community (as in conference presentations). We present two simple games in which scientists research a problem of scientific merit (with an associated prize of academic and/or commercial value). In both cases, the scientists have intermediate research results but none has solved the entire problem. We test these models using a unique survey of bio-scientists in the UK and Germany regarding their willingness to "share." Our results generally support both models. In both, sharing is negatively related to competition and the importance of patents. In other respects they differ markedly. For example, large teams are more likely to share specifically but less likely to share generally. Rank does not matter for general sharing, but it does for specific sharing, where untenured faculty are less likely to share. One important implication is that policies designed to enhance sharing must be tailored to the type of sharing.

Restructuring's Effect on Related and Unrelated Diversification Among Top Food Manufacturing Firms in the 1980s

    No full text
Corporate restructuring during the 1980s is argued to have focused on improving firm performance by increasing related and decreasing unrelated diversification. The restructuring patterns of top food manufacturing firms do not support this; instead, much of the restructuring appears to have been driven by the pursuit of stronger market positions. What drives deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon? Evidence from satellite and socioeconomic data

    No full text
This paper analyzes the determinants of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. From a model of optimal use, it derives and then estimates a deforestation equation on county-level data for the period 1978 to 1988. The data include a deforestation measure from satellite images, which is a great advance in that it allows improved within-county analysis. Evidence exists that: increased road density in a county leads to more deforestation in that county and in neighboring counties; development projects were associated with deforestation in the 1970s but not in the 1980s; greater distance from markets south of the Amazon leads to less deforestation; and better soil quality leads to more deforestation. The results for government provision of credit are mixed across specifications. The population density, although the primary explanatory variable in most previous empirical work, does not have a significant effect when all the variables motivated within the model are included. However, a quadratic specification yields a more robust population result: the first few people entering an empty county have significantly more impact than the same number of people added to a densely populated county. This result suggests the importance of the spatial distribution of population.Environmental Economics&Policies,Wetlands,Climate Change,Banks&Banking Reform,Water Conservation,Environmental Economics&Policies,Climate Change,Energy and Environment,Forestry,Banks&Banking Reform

NEW ESTIMATES OF WELFARE AND CONSUMER LOSSES IN U.S. FOOD MANUFACTURING

    No full text
In the past 15 years, industrial-organization economists have significantly expanded the range of algorithms for calculating welfare losses due to imperfect competition. We compare eleven empirical estimates of economic losses due to market power in 47 U.S. food manufacturing industries, almost all of them previously unpublished. Each of the studies incorporate different theoretical assumptions about demand conditions, supply conditions, or industry pricing behavior; or they utilize various data sources, time periods, and assumptions about the proper competitive benchmark. The estimates of average allocative losses due imperfect competition range from 0.2 percent to an impossibly high 289 percent of industry output; consumer losses range from 6.0 percent to 816 percent. However, there is a high degree of congruence in the rankings of economic losses due to market power. Hence, from the perspective of antitrust enforcement, the choice of industry targets has not been greatly altered by advances in estimation techniques.Agribusiness,

The present study aimed to verify the influences of the game Reversi in working memory of students diagnosed with ADHD. The participants were four subjects between 11 and 13 years. Two subjects were male, diagnosed with hyperactivity and two female subjects with a diagnosis of Attention Deficit. There were six meetings with the first and the last to perform the battery of cognitive monitoring Proa. In other meetings were held to practice the game Reversi where the data were measured the frequency rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV) and behaviors regarding the practice of the game: play time, reaction time, number of threads right, wrong number of threads, number of sequences mediated, time visual interaction between the player and mediator and between the player and the board. The results showed positive correlations between the behaviors mediate the wrong number of threads and psychophysiological indices of RR SD, rMSSD, pNN50, and LF, indicating a possible mental effort during the course of matches. Subjects diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive subtype present in the battery monitoring Proa an improvement in working memory task between the pretest and posttest. This study tried to do an initial relationship between the psycho-physiological aspects, behavioral, cognitive, during the course of a departure from the board game Reversi

This thesis examines the occurrence of the phenomenon known as "accruals anomaly" in the Brazilian capital market. The accruals anomaly refers to abnormal gains with the operation of an investment strategy based on the differential persistence of earnings components, and the association between accruals and returns. The study is driven by three hypotheses: (i) earnings components have a differential persistence, and the financial component (cash flow) has a persistence greater than the economic component (accruals) (ii) the expectation of earnings built into the stock price fails to reflect the difference in the persistence of earnings components (accruals and cash flow), (iii) the construction of a hedge portfolio, taking a long position in assets with low accruals and short position in assets with high accruals generates consistent abnormal returns. Data were obtained from the provider Economatica for the years 1990 to 2008. All listed assets in Bolsa de Valores de Sao Paulo (apart from financial firms) were included. The empirical tests demanded the execution of regressions with panel data to identify the persistence of earnings, its components and components of accruals; the Mishkin test, in order to check whether the market rationally pricing earnings; and the formation of the zero-investment portfolio to examine whether the trading strategy based on accruals provide positive and consistent abnormal returns. The results indicated that the persistence of accruals is lower than the persistence of cash flow, that the accrual component is not mispriced by the market, and that the trading strategy based on accruals do not provide consistent and positive returns, confirming the third hypothesis. Despite the evidence are not encouraging for the purpose of arbitrage, the results proved to be relevant in different perspectives. The methodology has identified, among other things, the quality of earnings and its components, the association between the components of earnings and returns and the influence of managerial discretion in the future profitability of assets. Therefore, the work opens new horizons for studies related to the accruals anomaly, such as information asymmetry, valuation and earnings management
