The role of physico-chemical interactions in the seasonality of toxic dinoflagellate cyst assemblages: The case of the NW Patagonian fjords system

    No full text
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are recurrent in the NW Patagonia fjords system and their frequency has increased over the last few decades. Outbreaks of HAB species such as Alexandrium catenella, a causal agent of paralytic shellfish poisoning, and Protoceratium reticulatum, a yessotoxins producer, have raised considerable concern due to their adverse socioeconomic consequences. Monitoring programs have mainly focused on their planktonic stages, but since these species produce benthic resting cysts, the factors influencing cyst distributions are increasingly gaining recognition as potentially important to HAB recurrence in some regions. Still, a holistic understanding of the physico-chemical conditions influencing cyst distribution in this region is lacking, especially as it relates to seasonal changes in drivers of cyst distributions as the characteristics that favor cyst preservation in the sediment may change through the seasons. In this study, we analyzed the physico–chemical properties of the sediment (temperature, pH, redox potential) and measured the bottom dissolved oxygen levels in a “hotspot” area of southern Chile, sampling during the spring and summer as well as the fall and winter, to determine the role these factors may play as modulators of dinoflagellate cyst distribution, and specifically for the cysts of A. catenella and P. reticulatum. A permutational analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) showed the significant effect of sediment redox conditions in explaining the differences in the cyst assemblages between spring-summer and fall-winter periods (seasonality). In a generalized linear model (GLM), sediment redox potential and pH were associated with the highest abundances of A. catenella resting cysts in the spring-summer, however it was sediment temperature that most explained the distribution of A. catenella in the fall-winter. For P. reticulatum, only spring-summer sediment redox potential and temperature explained the variation in cyst abundances. The implications of environmental physico-chemical seasonality for the resting cysts dynamics of both species are discussed.3,74

This dissertation sought to understand how the phenomenon of the Independence of Brazil changed the experience of Portuguese history. Based on the intellectual trajectory of the Portuguese scholar, Francisco Solano Constâncio (1777-1846), author completely immersed in the discourses of the Independence, became possible to follow the construction and the exhaustion of the narratives and conceptual fundamental structures for the realignment of the relationship between Portugal and Brazil after 1808. The analysis of the fundamental concepts of history, progress and decadence, as well as the production or decrease of the historical distance between both kingdoms, was prioritized from the different texts of the author, including his História do Brasil (1839). From this analysis, we sought to describe and understand what expectations were broken or intensified from the political separation that has hindered the reestablishment of a positive sense for the history of Portugal due to the loss of Brazil

Funding: The ShareTrait project has been supported by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research through the Open Science programme (OSF 203.001.015; OSF23.1.042). We are grateful for individual research support from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, Research Foundation—Flanders (FWO), Israel Science Foundation, Agencia National de Investigation y Desarrollo (ANID), Hudson River Foundation and The Nature Conservancy, National Biodiversity Future Centre and Fonds National de Recherche Scientifique. We acknowledge support by the Open Access publication fund of Alfred-Wegener-Institut Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung. We also acknowledge Manuel Díaz, Jorge Henríquez, Thamara Matamala and Katherine Espinoza for their support during the field campaign associated with one dataset used in this study. Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL.1. More and more data on species traits are being collected and made openly available. Despite these efforts, effective syntheses of trait data to comprehend how species respond to and affect their environment are hampered by inadequate standards for publishing the data and the associated metadata, which limits the interoperability and reuse of data across studies. 2. We have developed ShareTrait (https://sharetrait.org/), a novel initiative that consolidates individual-level trait data and associated metadata in an interoperable and reusable format, enabling standardised and integrated use. As a proof-of-concept, we initially focus on three core traits of ectotherms: metabolic rate, development time and fecundity. These traits, measurable in almost all animals, are fundamental to an organism’s overall fitness. 3. ShareTrait enables researchers to share their (meta)data with the research community. To date, researchers from diverse fields have contributed 28,692 individual-level data records to ShareTrait. These records originated from 45 datasets and are just the tip of the iceberg of existing data, highlighting the potential of ShareTrait to be a valuable community resource for meta-analyses and comparative approaches. 4. Future directions of ShareTrait will focus on accumulating more records, expanding to cover more traits, including those measurable at the population level, and partnering with journals in relevant fields (ecology, physiology, evolution) to make sharing standardised trait data part of the standard publication process. 5. We envision ShareTrait, along with its digital infrastructure and comprehensive metadata, to be a catalyst for collating trait data across species. ShareTrait can streamline research efforts, minimise duplication and empower researchers to explore patterns and broader ecological, evolutionary and physiological questions among taxa (e.g. via meta-analyses and comparative approaches). This way, ShareTrait will unlock new frontiers in trait-based approaches, enhancing our understanding of species–environment relationships.Peer reviewe

The present thesis studies the path of Lêda Boechat Rodrigues (1917-2014), and aims to investigate, through her personal experience, how the intersections between gender and academia have set structural tensions that accompanied her career and delimited the ways which Boechat found to become a historian. In the course of her path as a jurist and historian, Lêda Boechat Rodrigues received a considerable recognition, except within the History of Historiography. For this field of knowledge, the path walked by the scholar was followed by the shadow of the man chosen to be her husband: José Honório Rodrigues (1913-1987). This shadow would project itself over her experience as an intellectual, causing a void in her career, in which her place would be only of a wife, and not that of a historian. Based on this study case, the objective of this thesis is, therefore, to question the duality that was established between her recognition and the effective dimension of her work. We believe that the analysis of Lêda’s path allows us to question this (non)place held for her in the historical and historiographic imaginary. In the light of the political dimension of gender that hindered her recognition and set what was important or deserved to be remembered, our core hypothesis is that Lêda found a peculiar way to establish herself as a historian (and a historian of Historiography). Besides the wide historiographic production dedicated to Brazilian and North-American Law History, the intellectual acted effectively in the organization of José Honório’s texts as a historian, a pivotal author to the History of Brazilian Historiography. Either in the condition of collaborator, or as an organizer of his literary estate, producing a wide historigraphic heritage about Rodrigues, Lêda made this author and his work a reference not only for those who knew him in life, but a historiographic monument to be read and recognized by other generations

This paper is an essay that presents an autobiographical narrative of a family that experiences the adoption. The family consists of the mother and author of this work, father and six adopted children. The work also aims to understand aspects of abandonment, institutionalization and the late adoption; notes narrate facts, feelings and challenges present in the trajectory of reception and family structure; analyze the prospect of changes in the world of reading and family life written in adoption of context; and reflect on the changes perceived in the school life of children after adoption. The theory of subjectivity González Rey (2003), which values the human capacity to produce subjective senses; the idea of living as conceptualized by Nietzsche (Viesenteiner, 2013); and systemic approach of family psychology Maldonado (2001) and Bucher (1986) cross the conceptual approach of this work, other than the authors directly related to depth issues. The test is organized into three themes: abandonment, institutionalization and adoption. Each theme is developed in three stages: the first deals with the story of the process experienced by children and adopting parents; the second brings the subjective experience of the author and mother; and the third presents contributions of theoretical order to help you understand the narrative about the experienced adoption process. A reading of the world and word universe of ownership and affects the new family is woven into the narrative course. It is emphasized the right to childhood, built and achieved historically

Climate-driven changes in freshwater inputs to a Northern patagonia Fjord and overfishing of wild mussel seed could threaten Chilean mussel farming

    No full text
Chile is the world’s leading exporter of farmed mussels, with an annual harvest of about 400,000 tonnes; this production is based on the capture of wild seeds, the availability of which may be threatened by climate change and overfishing. Climate change has led to a decrease in annual precipitation, which increases the salinity of the water column and may affect the vertical distribution of mussel populations in fjords. In Reloncaví Fjord, Chile, observed changes in precipitation are reducing freshwater inputs, leading to potential shifts in the habitat and distribution of the economically important Chilean mussel (Mytilus chilensis) and a competing species, Aulacomya atra. This study analyses the vertical dynamics of mussel beds in relation to changing environmental conditions, including freshwater inputs, salinity and hydrological regimes in a fjord exploited for mussel seed collection. The results suggest that decreasing trends in precipitation could lead to increased surface salinity, reducing M. chilensis beds while favouring A. atra, with negative consequences for wild seed collection, thus threatening the Chilean mussel farming industry and predicting socio-economic consequences for small-scale aquaculture. This study also describes the increasing fishing pressure on wild mussel larvae, suggesting joint effects that cannot be disentangled with the information currently available and that represent a key challenge for the design of adaptation measures to climate change. Therefore, this study highlights the need for better monitoring of mussel beds together with seed production and oceanographic conditions, as well as improving aquaculture practices that reduce unnecessary pressure on mussel beds through seed collection in the face of changing environmental conditions

Beer is one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages in the world and has been consumed by humans since ancient times. The main ingredients for its production include malt, water, hops and yeast. Each of these raw materials act in a specific way, providing a specific flavor as a final result. Currently, there are two main beer-producing methods in the world, which can be industrial or craft (artisanal), the latter being produced in more detail and in small quantities, naturally, without the addition of preservatives or chemical products, with longer manufacturing time. Drinking a quality and safe beverage is one of the basic requirements to ensure the health of consumers. One of the ways to ensure that the beer complies with the standards established by legislation is through physical-chemical analyses, in which it is possible to observe whether the drink has adequate characteristics for consumption. Therefore, this study aimed to bibliometrically analyze the scientific production obtained through an integrative literature review on the production and quality of craft beers. The research was carried using the Google Scholar databases, Periodico Capes database and the Theses and Dissertations Catalog portal. Twenty works on the subject were selected and were classified according to the year of publication. The year 2017 had the highest number of publications, 20% of the total. The research area that stood out the most was food, accounting for 55%, and the most found sub theme in the works was on the production, sensory and physical-chemical analysis of craft beer. Regarding the authors with more publications, ALVES (2017) stood out, with three works on craft beer, being the main author of 2 (two). The ranking was also carried out in terms of the database with the most publications, and Google Scholar stood out, with 75%. The journal with the highest number of publications was the Revista Brasileira de Desenvolvimento (BJD) (Brazilian Journal of Development). The main physicochemical analyzes performed on craft beers were also identified, in which the pH and alcohol content parameter stood out in 19 (nineteen) of the 20 (twenty) works analyzed, as well as the acidity parameter found in 17 (seventeen) studies. Most studies followed the methods described by Instituto Adolfo Lutz. Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that it may contribute to the development of future works related to the analysis of craft beer in a practical and theoretical way, avoiding possible errors and allowing methodologies updates. It should be noted that the research results are subject to limitations related to data production. Thus, the use of other databases, including those in the English language, are recommended for future studies.

We will explain the following ideas about the work of the author: 1 - there is a discontinuity among man (conscience) and real; 2 - the real also mobilized in order to destabilize the meanings and senses that are given world, and 3 - the history (research of the past ) also becomes important with regard to the possibility of disclosure of the real (or history) is, and this behavior by describing the theoretical and practical men in the past, their insights and strategies. Keywords: Gumbrecht, theory of history, philosophy of history

Recent massive invasions of the circumboreal sea anemone Metridium senile in North and South Patagonia

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.The circumboreal sea anemone species Metridium senile is a non-native species in Chilean Patagonia. The species is responsible for the occupation of large tracts of benthic substrate, threatening benthic resources such as sea urchins and barnacles. It has potentially devastating ecological impact on the overall benthic community. Species associated to the genus Metridium have been alluded to in the historical literature on Chilean marine life by various names. We summarize and evaluate their appearance in the literature and suggest eliminating the name Metridium senile lobatum for the South American subspecies. The first appearance of Metridium senile was confirmed in 2005 by the authors from Central Patagonia. Subsequently it was noted as abundant at multiple sites. In North Patagonia, it was first recorded from one site in 2011, followed by one more record in 2013 and several in 2015. In subsequent years, it has been recorded at an increasing number of sites based on our surveying. During our most recent surveys in 2021, we confirmed that it remains abundant at numerous sites throughout North Patagonia. In South Patagonia, it was first reported in 2015 from one site in the Straits of Magellan, and from two further sites around Cape Horn in 2017. It has not been recorded at additional sites nor has it significantly increased in abundance in southern Chilean Patagonia. However, it has been observed to be common at the Becasses Islands in the Argentinean part of Beagle Channel in 2021. Therefore, we recommend starting a monitoring program and putting restrictions on the transport of benthic invertebrates to avoid introducing the species to sites where it is not present yet
