    Secondary Literacy Across the Curriculum

    No full text
This paper discusses the challenges and possibilities attendant upon successfully implementing literacy across the curriculum initiatives – or ‘school language policies’ as they have come to be known – particularly at the secondary or high school level. It provides a theoretical background to these issues, exploring previous academic discussions of school language policies, and highlights key areas of concern as well as opportunity with respect to school implementation of such policies. As such, it provides a necessary conceptual background to the subsequent papers in this special issue, which focus upon the Secondary Schools’ Literacy Initiative (SSLI) – a New Zealand funded programme that aims to establish cross-curricular language and literacy policies in secondary schools

The importance of resistance in the context of critical infrastructure resilience: An extension of the CIERA method

    No full text
Technical sectors compose an inseparable and elementary part of a complex critical infrastructure (CI) system. Their provided services are essential to the functioning of all of the dependent sectors of CI on which society and states depend, especially in areas experiencing high levels of urbanisation. The initial point for effective CI elements’ protection is the permanent assessment and strengthening of their capacity for resilience to the negative effects of internal and external threats. The current perceptions of resilience focus primarily on repressive components responsive to incidents (i.e., robustness, recoverability, and adaptability), while minimal attention is paid to the preventative components. The article’s contribution to this literature gap is its definition of resistance, which can be considered as a CI element’s ability to prevent the occurrence of incidents. To this goal, the current study defines (1) the individual factors (variables and parameters) determining CI resistance and (2) the methodological procedure for infrastructure element resistance assessment in order to identify the weak points throughout a complex CI system and subsequently strengthen them. Moreover, a practical example of resistance assessment for a selected critical energy infrastructure element is presented. The main outcome of this article is the definition of the primary steps for the expansion of the CIERA method, via the enhancement of CI components’ resilience capacity in the prevention phase

Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity-Short: An Investigation of Reliability and Construct Validity in a Clinical Sample of African American Women

    No full text
The Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity (MIBI), derived from the Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity (MMRI), is frequently used to evaluate the meaning African Americans ascribe to race. The scale was developed for use with African American college students from predominantly working- or middle-class socioeconomic backgrounds and has primarily been studied with similar college samples. Despite its popularity, mixed findings regarding the scale’s psychometric properties call into question the extent to which the MIBI adequately captures the complexity of the MMRI for a wide range of African Americans. Many scholars have called for an examination of the MIBI’s applicability with a more representative sample of African Americans from diverse age, gender, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds (e.g., Fischer & Morandi, 2001; Sellers et al., 1997) and clinical and community samples (Lewis, Mathews, & Jones, 2022). The current study responds to this call by examining the psychometric properties of a shortened version of the MIBI (MIBI-S) in a sample of 196 African American women who are middle-aged, from poor or working-class socioeconomic backgrounds with low educational attainment recruited from a clinical setting. Findings revealed that the MIBI-S scores closely map onto the first-order seven-factor structure proposed in the MMRI framework and thus evidenced acceptable internal consistency and structural validity in a clinical sample of African American Women. However, the higher-order factor structure proposed in the MMRI framework was not supported by these data. Clinical implications and recommendations for future Black racial identity research and MIBI scale refinement are discussed.Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)Psycholog
