The investigation in "Dora Bruder" of Patrick Modiano
This work proposes to deal with the subject of investigation in the novel "Dora Bruder" by French writer Patrick Modiano, published in 1997. It’s the most known publishing success of the author, which, in a narrative in the meantime biographical and autobiographical, goes on the trail of Dora Bruder, a young Jewish girl disappeared in 1941, of whom all traces have been definitively lost. This thesis is composed by three chapters. In the first, we will analyse the reasons why the author deal with the story of the young girl vanished during the Second World War. Then, in the second chapter, we will approach how the author does his own investigation to understand what happened to her, becoming sort of a detective on an old case of disappearence. Finally, in the last chapter, we focus on which it’ll be the outcome of his investigation

Patrick Modiano, Nobel Prize for Literature 2014, has had an abundant activity as a songwriter between 1967 and 1970. Together with his friend from prep school, Hughes de Courson, they were writing songs for artists as prestigious as Françoise Hardy, Régine and Myriam Anissimov, famous for her biographies of Primo Levi and Romain Gary. In this article, we explore the core themes of some of those songs, asking ourselves to what extent they reflect literary themes and characters Modiano develops in his novels. We argue that his years of songwriting have allowed Modiano to find his voice as an author. With Modiano having found the sober elegance which is still marking his writing in Les boulevards de ceinture, he abruptly stopped writing songs, with one exception in 2018. The fiction of Modiano : rehashes, variations, breaks
From La Place de l’Etoile to L’Horizon, can we recognize the same "signature" of Modiano ? He marked his début with the first novel by a flamboyant character (the author deems later as "a sort of pamphlet"), then the mannerism yield to a (neo) classicism. A break would be intervened in the writing of Modiano. But when does this break occur ? It is certain that from the second novel, La Ronde de nuit, the tone has changed. However, La Place de l’Etoile with La Ronde de nuit and Les Boulevards de ceinture forms the first trilogy, focusing on the German occupation of Paris : this character invites us to examine the continuity and discontinuity in the fictive writing of Modiano. Due to the rehashes and variations, the style of writer has certain strikings features that can be easily identified. There is no doubt, in reading retrospectively all the novels of Modiano, the aberrant nature of La Place de l’Etoile is strident . However, if we abstracte his appearance delirious, isn’t it possible to notice that there exist already several signs of forerunners in the writing of Modiano ? This present research starts from a detailed study of La Place de l’Etoile to examine the “petite musique” of Modiano. We confront this novel with his later works, by following the chronology of his creation, in expectation to identify in his writing the elements of rehashes, variations and breaks

The German Occupation in recent French fiction : an analysis of the literary “mode retro”
This thesis attempts to analyse and characterise the mode rétro, the remarkable renewal of interest in the German Occupation of France, which is coloured by an extensive re-evaluation of the period's significance. An introduction places this fashion in its literary, social and historical context, revealing how, from 1940 to 1969, a collective and predominantly Gaullist 'myth' of the Resistance became established, with the result that the national response to invasion was accepted to be one of wide-spread heroism and revolt. Part I studies the reaction to such résistancialisme, showing how this orthodox interpretation of events was undermined and, for many, discredited, and offering explanations of the timing and direction of the new view. Part II focuses on the fiction, memoirs, autobiographies and biographies of the younger authors, those who have no direct adult experience of the années noires. It is suggested that their obvious obsession with absent parent-figures reflects their awareness that the past has been misrepresented and their heritage rendered problematic. Their sole means of escape from this predicament, their only source of emotional relief is seen to lie in the creation of a personal account of the early 1940s running contrary to the prevalent orthodoxy, the fabrication of a 'counter-myth'. It is thus the notion of myth which links the various sections of the survey, and so gives the thesis its overall unity
‘Repertoire images’ in Patrick Modiano\u27s Fiction
This article aims to integrate the notion of repertoire (understood as complementary and not synonymous with the notion of archive) with the notion of memory which is at the basis of Patrick Modiano\u27s narrative work. After elaborating a definition of the term ‘repertoire,’ an analysis of four novels by the author is proposed in which, as indeed in all his production, a weak and frayed memory feeds, in its continuous struggle against oblivion, on images resurfaced from the past.
Patrick Modiano
Winner of some of France's most prestigious literary prizes, Patrick Modiano is considered one of the most fascinating French novelists alive today. This is the first English literary critique of this best-selling French author, whose works are found increasingly in translation throughout the world and who is attracting considerable critical attention outside France. In this lucid study, Alan Morris explores Modiano's fifteen major novels. He also traces Modiano's development as a writer and the tragedies which have influenced his works: the death of his younger brother, the neglect of his father and the horrors of the German occupation. Morris delves into Modiano's themes of time, memory, identity and the past, clearly demonstrating this intriguing writer's key place in French writing today
Finalement, on observe aussi que Modiano établit une proximité entre la remémoration et l'enquête, il s'approprie et subvertit à la fois le modèle du roman policier traditionnelThis research is concerned with Patrick Modiano's literary universe, an author whose work is articulated around the period of the Nazy Occupation in his country and inserted in the context of French literature that refers to the Second Generation of Jewish writers. Firstly, it shows the development of Modiano's production, contextualizing it literary and historically and emphasizing the author's powerful role in the appearance of new interpretations for Vichy government. Then, it analyses the movement of attraction and resistance to the autobiographical gender and the elaboration of an autobiographical space in his works that can be read in an articulated way. As the main substract in Modiano's works are remembrances, this research also demonstrates that the writer remakes a gap memory, creating a kind of poetics that aspires to present a blank. In this process of recalling, photography is worth mentioning since it is a valuable tool for the transmission of remembrances. Lastly, the research points to the fact that Modiano makes recalling close to investigation, using and overthrowing the traditional patterns of detective novel
