    Tutte sets in graphs I: Maximal tutte sets and D-graphs

    No full text
    A well-known formula of Tutte and Berge expresses the size of a maximum matching in a graph G in terms of what is usually called the deficiency of G. A subset X of V(G) for which this deficiency is attained is called a Tutte set of G. While much is known about maximum matchings, less is known about the structure of Tutte sets. In this article, we study the structural aspects of maximal Tutte sets in a graph G. Towards this end, we introduce a related graph D(G). We first show that the maximal Tutte sets in G are precisely the maximal independent sets in its D-graph D(G), and then continue with the study of D-graphs in their own right, and of iterated D-graphs. We show that G is isomorphic to a spanning subgraph of D(G), and characterize the graphs for which G ≅ D(G) and for which D(G) ≅ D2(G). Surprisingly, it turns out that for every graph G with a perfect matching, D3(G) ≅ D2(G). Finally, we characterize bipartite D-graphs and comment on the problem of characterizing D-graphs in general. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

    O profeta São João Maria continua encantando no meio do povo: um estudo sobre os discursos contemporâneos a respeito de João Maria em Santa Catarina

    Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Antropologia Social.Este é um estudo sobre os discursos contemporâneos a respeito de João Maria em Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil. Partindo da noção de discurso como ação humana significativa (Ricoeur), afirmo que os discursos a respeito de João Maria são construídos pelos joaninos a partir de sua cultura histórica (formada por valores, símbolos, imagens, personagens, eventos contextuais e um catolicismo difuso), possuem temporalidade, expressam algo e são disponibilizados para outras leituras e interpretações. É o próprio discurso dos joaninos que serve como mecanismo de legitimação de João Maria, dos discursos atribuídos a ele, dos próprios discursantes (joaninos) e de sua cultura histórica. João Maria é visto, neste trabalho, como evento fundante, em torno do qual gravitam muitos sentidos, e como entidade multivalente, identificado como Deus, Jesus Cristo, Profeta, Santo ou símbolo da luta pela terra. Legitimados, os discursos a respeito de João Maria apresentam-se como adequados na interpretação do mundo dos joaninos, no controle da indeterminação do mundo, para anunciar e acabar com o mal, reagir contra aquilo que não está de acordo com sua cultura, estimular a luta política ou anunciar o mundo desejado

    Minimally invasive radio-guided parathyroidectomy on a group of 452 primary hyperparathyroid patients - Refinement of preoperative imaging and intraoperative procedure

    THE AIM: of this study was to investigate the efficacy of minimally invasive radio-guided parathyroidectomy (MIRP) in primary hyperparathyroid (PHPT) patients. PATIENTS, METHODS: 452 consecutive PHPT patients were evaluated. Inclusion criteria for MIRP were (a) evidence at scintigraphy of a solitary parathyroid adenoma (PA); (b) a clear sestamibi uptake in the PA; (c) the absence of concomitant thyroid nodules; (d) no history of familial HPT or MEN; (e) no history of previous neck irradiation. Intra-operative protocol consisted of the injection of a low 37 MBq sestamibi dose in the operating suite 10 min before surgery. A hand held 11-mm collimated gamma probe was used. Quick PTH (QPTH) was routinely measured. RESULTS: 344 out of the 452 patients met the inclusion criteria, and MIRP was successfully performed in 321 of them (93.3%). No major intra-operative complication was recorded. MIRP required a mean operative time of 32 min, and a mean hospital stay of 1.2 d. The parathyroid to background ratio (P/B) calculated by the probe was well correlated with the P/B calculated by sestamibi SPECT (r = 0.91; p < 0.01), while no significant correlation was found between the probe-calculated P/B and the P/B calculated at planar sestamibi scan. CONCLUSIONS: In our experience: a) an accurate preoperative localising imaging protocol based on planar and SPECT sestamibi scan, and neck US is effective in selecting PHPT patients for MIRP, b) the P/B calculated by sestamibi SPECT seems able to predict the probe-calculated P/B more accurately than the P/B calculated at planar scan, c) the low 37 MBq sestamibi dose protocol proved to be a safe and effective approach to perform MIRP

    Search for the decay modes D-0 -> e(+) e(-), D-0 -> mu(+) mu(-), and D-0 -> e(+/-) mu -/+

    We present searches for the rare decay modes D-0 -> e(+) e(-), D-0 -> mu(+) mu(-), and D-0 -> e(+/-) mu(-/+) in continuum e(+) e(-) -> c (c) over bar events recorded by the BABAR detector in a data sample that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 468 fb(-1). These decays are highly Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani suppressed but may be enhanced in several extensions of the standard model. Our observed event yields are consistent with the expected backgrounds. An excess is seen in the D-0 -> mu(+) mu(-) channel, although the observed yield is consistent with an upward background fluctuation at the 5% level. Using the Feldman-Cousins method, we set the following 90% confidence level intervals on the branching fractions: B(D-0 -> e(+) e(-)) mu(+) mu(-)) within [0.6,8.1] x 10(-7), and B(D-0 -> e(+/-) mu(-/+)) < 3.3 x 10(-7).
