Climate change and heatwaves in the main coastal cities of the Basque Country
In this paper we analyse the probabilistic behaviour of heatwaves (HWs) in the main coastal cities of the Basque Country (Bayonne, Bilbao and Donostia-San Sebastian) in the twentyfirst century. We estimate HW behaviour using data from eight climate circulation models under two representative concentration pathways (RCP 8.5 and RCP 4.5). We model HWs according to three factors: number per annum, duration and intensity, including correlations, and find very different results for each climate model. This highlights the problem of using a single model. Under RCP 8.5, we find an expected mean excess over the 30C temperature threshold of 4.19C for Bayonne, 4.05C for Bilbao and 4.14C for Donostia-San Sebastian in 2100. These expected values are based on incomplete information, so we also calculate several risk measures. © 2020 Servicio Central Publicaciones. A Qualitative Study on a Process of Parents’ Acceptance of Children’s Severe Motor and Intellectual Disabilities (SMID)
The purpose of this paper was to generate viewpoints on how parents acknowledge and accept children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) by interviewing eight parents with children who have SMID. The author used a basic principle of a paper-based MAXqda to examine the process and analyze the interview data. The result of the analysis indicated that six concepts were found concerning parents’ acceptance of children with SMID: complaint of medical care, learning of child-raising skills by mothers, support by families, differences in ways of thinking between husbands and wives, reference group members, and generation gaps.
When parents had children with SMID, it was meaningful to have groups to rely on. In particular, the author found three viewpoints. First, parents’ sharing their suffering or joy with other parents who had SMID led to a positive way of thinking. Second, once the parents became connected with other parents, they established a network.
Then, the network was reinforced and deployed as activities of a peer group. Third, the parents tried to change the system which contradicted the reality by using the network established.departmental bulletin pape
Half a degree and rapid socioeconomic development matter for heatwave risk
While every society can be exposed to heatwaves, some people suffer far less harm and recover more quickly than others from their occurrence. Here we project indicators of global heatwave risk associated with global warming of 1.5 and 2 °C, specified by the Paris agreement, for two future pathways of societal development representing low and high vulnerability conditions. Results suggest that at the 1.5 °C warming level, heatwave exposure in 2075 estimated for the population living in low development countries is expected to be greater than exposure at the warming level of 2 °C for the population living in very high development countries. A similar result holds for an illustrative heatwave risk index. However, the projected difference in heatwave exposure and the illustrative risk index for the low and very high development countries will be significantly reduced if global warming is stabilized below 1.5 °C, and in the presence of rapid social development.publishersversionpublishe
Climate change and impacts in the urban systems
A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Information Management, specialization in Geographic Information SystemsUrban systems are not only major drivers of climate change, but also impact hotspots. The processes of global warming and urban population growth make our urban agglomerations vulnerable to chain reactions triggered by climate related hazards. Hence, the reliable and cost-effective assessment of future climate impact is of high importance. Two major approaches emerge from the literature: i) detailed spatially explicit assessments, and ii) more holistic approaches consistently assessing multiple cities. In this multidisciplinary thesis both approaches were addressed. Firstly, we discuss the underlying reasons and main challenges of the applicability of downscaling procedures of climate projections in the process of urban planning. While the climate community has invested significant effort to provide downscaling techniques yielding localised information on future climate extreme events, these methods are not widely exploited in the process of urban planning. The first part of this research attempts to help bridge the gap between the communities of urban planners and climatologists. First, we summarize the rationale for such cooperation, supporting the argument that the spatial scale represents an important linkage between urban and climate science in the process of designing an urban space. Secondly, we introduce the main families of downscaling techniques and their application on climate projections, also providing the references to profound studies in the field. Thirdly, special attention is given to previous works focused on the utilization of downscaled ensembles of climate simulations in urban agglomerations. Finally, we identify three major challenges of the wider utilization of climate projections and downscaling techniques, namely: (i) the scale mismatch between data needs and data availability, (ii) the terminology, and (iii) the IT bottleneck. The practical implications of these issues are discussed in the context of urban studies. The second part of this work is devoted to the assessment of impacts of extreme temperatures across the European capital cities. In warming Europe, we are witnessing a growth in urban population with aging trend, which will make the society more vulnerable to extreme heat waves. In the period 1950-2015 the occurrence of extreme heat waves increased across European capitals. As an example, Moscow was hit by the strongest heat wave of the present era, killing more than ten thousand people. Here we focus on larger metropolitan areas of European capitals. By using an ensemble of eight EURO-CORDEX models under the RCP8.5 scenario, we calculate a suite of temperature based climate indices. We introduce a ranking procedure based on ensemble predictions using the mean of metropolitan grid cells for each capital, and socio-economic variables as a proxy to quantify the future impact. Results show that all the investigated European metropolitan areas will be more vulnerable to extreme heat in the coming decades. Based on the impact ranking, the results reveal that in near, but mainly in distant future, the extreme heat events in European capitals will be not exclusive to traditionally exposed areas such as the Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula. Cold waves will represent some threat in mid of the century, but they are projected to completely vanish by the end of this century. The ranking of European capitals based on their vulnerability to the extreme heat could be of paramount importance to the decision makers in order to mitigate the heat related mortality. Such a simplistic but descriptive multi-risk urban indicator has two major uses. Firstly, it communicates the risk associated with climate change locally and in a simple way. By allowing to illustratively relate to situations of other capitals, it may help to engage not only scientists, but also the decision makers and general public, in efforts to combat climate change. Secondly, such an indicator can serve as a basis to decision making on European level, assisting with prioritizing the investments and other efforts in the adaptation strategy. Finally, this study transparently communicates the magnitude of future heat, and as such contributes to raise awareness about heat waves, since they are still often not perceived as a serious risk.
Another contribution of this work to communication of consequences of changing climate is represented by the MetroHeat web tool, which provides an open data climate service for visualising and interacting with extreme temperature indices and heat wave indicators for European capitals. The target audience comprises climate impact researchers, intermediate organisations, societal-end users, and the general public

Piety, practices of reading and inquisition. A Catalan Saint Cyprian prayer from 1557 and its context.
The author focuses on a defendant of an inquisition trial (1641-1644) and its sources, namely, a healing hermit and the Saint Cyprian prayer in Catalan published in 1557 and used by him as a magical charm. The author, beyound the philological and folkloristic study of the text, presents the vulgarisation of reading skills and the realization of reading practice in a given social context. She uses the most important and relevant theological literature of the period and the attestations of the trial as keys to reading. She pays special attention to the context of prayer and its real social use. Her objective is to analyse the textual elements and gestures of the healing rite, therefore she investigates the probable readins of the healing specialist, which makes it possible to reach a deeper understanding of the hermit's role as a cultural mediator

We trace a 9 path to think about this difficulty that considers Freud\'s reflections on repetition, transference and countertransference and Lacan\'s reflections on repetition, transference, and the analyst\'s desire and resistance. We propose to call joint repetition a discursive index that an analysis, despite its empirical continuity may occur, does not progress from the point of view of the symptom or the relationship with the truth. For if an analysis goes through remembering, repeating and elaborating and the instant of seeing, time to understand and moment to conclude, it is plausible to think that it, for some reasons, may be unable to proceed to the elaboration. and for the moment to conclude and stand still in a joint repetition between patient and analyst. Our hypothesis is that once this index of impossibility is detected, there are chances that it can be evaluated, either just to recognize it, or to try to turn it into a possibility and reduce the risks of iatrogenesis or of disturbing the progress of the process. treatment. We used four interviews with Freudian and Lacanian analysts, beginners and experienced, one with each of these combinations. We submitted the interviews to psychoanalytic discourse analysis to, through this analysis, collect examples and logical operators that point to this perception of treatment stagnation. In the end, we could argue that although we have the tripod as formative support personal analysis, supervision and theoretical study , we will not always be able to discern when to use these supports, as this judgment will be impaired by the effect of repetition, and they will not always be sufficient. to help in the direction of a treatment and it may be impossible and in a joint repetition, until the analysand ceases the treatment or the analyst can give adequate treatment to the perceived impossibility, in order to try to reverse it
