Parameterization of the duration of infection stages of serotype O foot-and-mouth disease virus: an analytical review and meta-analysis with application to simulation models

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is considered one of the most important infectious diseases of livestock because of the devastating economic consequences that it inflicts in affected regions. The value of critical parameters, such as the duration of the latency or the duration of the infectious periods, which affect the transmission rate of the FMD virus (FMDV), are believed to be influenced by characteristics of the host and the virus. Disease control and surveillance strategies, as well as FMD simulation models, will benefit from improved parameter estimation. The objective of this study was to quantify the distributions of variables associated with the duration of the latency, subclinical, incubation, and infectiousness periods of FMDV transmission. A double independent, systematic review of 19 retrieved publications reporting results from experimental trials, using 295 animals in four reference laboratories, was performed to extract individual values related to FMDV transmission. Probability density functions were fitted to data and a set of regression models were used to identify factors associated with the assessed parameters. Latent, subclinical, incubation, and infectious periods ranged from 3.1 to 4.8, 2 to 2.3, 5.5 to 6.6, and 3.3 to 5.7 days, respectively. Durations were significantly (p < 0.05) associated independently with route of exposure, type of donor, animal species, strains, characteristics of sampling, and clinical signs. These results will contribute to the improvement of disease control and surveillance strategies and stochastic models used to simulate FMD spread and, ultimately, development of cost-effective plans to prevent and control the potential spread of the disease in FMD-free regions of the world

Curriculum Studies as an international conversation: cosmopolitanism in a Latin American key

    No full text
My work addresses the field of Curriculum Studies as a worldwide interdisciplinary field, its difficulties, complications, and possibilities. It primarily focuses on the relations between the Anglo-Saxon field of Curriculum Studies and the Latin American educational tradition. Looking at these relations from the 1960s to the current moment, I seek to unpack the complexities involved in understanding Curriculum Studies as an international field. Although there are historical and current power dynamics complicating this endeavor, I suggest a possible cosmopolitan project informed by intercultural dialogue. I develop my understanding of curriculum as currere (Pinar, 1976a, 1976b; Grumet 1976a, 1976b) to inform my dissertation both conceptually and methodologically. I accept Pinar’s conceptualization of the field of Curriculum Studies as a complicated conversation. I situate my joining the conversation in that field from an international point of view, from my Latin American self. It is my own biography that brings this particular conversation into being, with the intention of making life educative. I situate my own educational experience at the center of this inquiry, trying to understand my biographical situation as a Latin American history teacher earning a Ph.d. in Curriculum and Instruction in an American University,a context where my biography intertwines with the field’s history. I move from biography to history in a conversation where personal troubles become public issues, biography and history intertwine, and the struggle for a better life emerges with ethical urgency. Methodologically, I suggest a variant of the regressive-progressive-analytical-synthetical method currere. I tie each of these four moments of currere to a specific decade in my life and in the history of the field in the United States and Latin America. The regressive moment, the time of the given, is tied to the 1960s, when the field of curriculum arrived and was in tension with the progressive moment, which is tied to the 1990s and the problem of ‘the other’ that emerged around the commemoration of 1492. The analytical is the 2000s, in which the decision to devote myself to the field of education was put into tension with the synthetical, which refers to the current moment, the 2010s, when I advocate the study of Curriculum Studies. From there, I propose my version of a cosmopolitan project in Curriculum Studies, a cosmopolitanism that I can only sing in a Latin American key.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2018-12-01The student, Daniel Johnson Mardones, accepted the attached license on 2016-11-15 at 13:53.The student, Daniel Johnson Mardones, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2016-11-15 at 14:07.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2016-11-17 at 14:59.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10249 on 2017-02-28 at 14:41:33Made available in DSpace on 2017-03-01T17:01:17Z (GMT). Fragments of the self: self-awareness, identity, and heteronymy in the works of Fernando Pessoa

    No full text
This thesis explores the theme of self-awareness in the works of Fernando Pessoa, with a particular focus on the relashionship between identity and heteronymy. Through the creation of his heteronymys, Pessoa addresses fundamental questions related to the fragmentation of the self and the complexity of human identity. The analysis centers on the multifaceted nature of the author, investigating how each heteronym represents a distinct aspect of his inner world and an attempt to understand and transcend the limits of individuality

Abstract : The construction of Fernando Henrique Cardoso?s legacy has been developed based on the mark of structuring ruptures and dichotomies, characteristics that are both articulated around the idea of the transition from the intellectual to the political activity, in a process that reinforces strong features of the Brazilian political imagination. Anchored in a criticism of this view, this study investigates what the process of formation of the author?s legacy developed until the present moment reveal about the forms through which the ?Brazilian political thought? is produced and reinvented, or, in other words, what his personal intellectual trajectory represents in relation to the collective thought trajectory designated by this expression. Two main interpretative theses are tested throughout this work: the first one is that the continuity and the unity between the several moments of Cardoso?s intellectual trajectory (denied by the approaches that, until the present moment, have been systematizing his legacy) can be reconstructed and recuperated if the emphasis of the analysis lies in the political specificity of his writings - assuming that both the reconstructing and the recuperation, obviously, do not fail to consider possible inconsistencies, incoherences and changes in the beliefs of the author throughout his trajectory; and second , that such political thought , without disregarding other sources generally labeled as ?universal? , is structured from a selective, systematic and continuous dialogue with some of the main forms of interpretation of the policy in the country, this dialogue , on the one hand , makes it possible to show the existence of a worldview to act as ?common thread? for all of his thought (giving him a sense of coherence), and on the other, to understand the impact of this ressignificador thinking about such matrices. The work is organized in three parts: in the first, the field of the Brazilian political thought is theoretical and methodologically questioned; in the second part, the specificity of the author?s political reflection is discussed based on two different moments (the establishment and the consolidation of his political beliefs); and, in the third part, in an attempt of approximating the two previous parts, the specificity of the insertion of the author?s political thought in the Brazilian political thought field is discussed, which is based on two variables: the filiations and the receptions

[EN] An approach to Fernando Ostiz's creative work-concerning not only the outcome of his scientific work, but also the way in which he developed it according to the social and cultural context he lived in-is proposed. Consequently, the contrast established by the author between the Cuban savant's image and the Spanish anthropologist Julio Caro Baroja is quite interesting. Peer reviewe

Fernando Vizcaíno Casas is an author with multiple facets, although he was only recognised by his successfull leading articles during the Spanish Transition. Drama was one of less known biographical attitudes. It as never claimed by himself, despite of being a proud author.
