Biochemical Complexity: Emergence or Design?
It is the criticism of Michael Behe’s concept of irreducible complexity. Author believes that Behe presents a false dichotomy of possible explanations of the origin of biochemical complexity: Darwinism-intelligent design. According to the author, biochemical complexity may be also an outcome of self-organization. He presents arguments that it is indeed the case
ACCIDENTAL 3-LEVEL DOUBLE RESONANCES IN THE LASER-STARK SPECTRUM OF
W. H. Weber, Chem. Phys. Letters 122, 469 (1985). Address of Weber: Physics Department, Research Staff, Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, MI 48121.Author Institution:A series of accidental 3-level double resonances are observed in the non-linear Stark spectrum of obtained with a CO laser and an intracavity cell. They are assigned as Doppler-free-2photon absorptions originating in the a(4, 3) ground state level and terminating in the level, with an exactly resonant s2v2 (5, 3) intermediate state. These resonances occur in pairs, symmetrically located in the Doppler wings on either side of the usual Lamb dips. They are comparable in strength and width to the Lamb dips, but they have the opposite phase. One of each pair is associated with co-propagating absorption. the other being its counter-propagating partner. The co-propagating features are particularly interesting, since they can be observed without a cavity and their resonant field strengths do not depend on the laser frequency. They also span a wide range in electric field, from 22 kV/cm to over 90 kV/cm, and thus constitute an ideal series for establishing calibration standards in field strength. The data are analyzed to determine term values and Stark coefficients for the excited The resulting fit gives an rms error of KHz for 18 lines
Pearson codes design with error-control capabilities
In mass storage systems or certain transmission channels, such as optical data storage and non-volatile memory (flash), noise or interference is not the only disturbance during the data transmission, the error performance sometimes can be seriously degraded by the phenomena of unknown channel offset (drift) or gain mismatch, this is because the conventional minimum Euclidean distance decoding, where the receiver picks a codeword from the code book to minimise the Euclidean distance with the received codeword, doesn't offer resistance for the offset and gain mismatch. As a alternative to the minimum Euclidean distance detection, a new distance called Pearson distance and the Pearson-distance-based detection are introduced by Immink and Weber, where the error performance is immune to unknown offset and/or gain mismatch but more sensitive to the noise than the traditional Euclidean distance detection. In addition, the Pearson-distance-based decoding can only productively used for sets of q-ary codewords with some specific properties, which is a new class of code called Pearson code. Therefore, to make the Pearson-distance-based detection more applicable against the channel noise, it is crucial to improve the error control capabilities of Pearson code. In this thesis, we will investigate the performance of different Pearson codes in the Pearson-distance-based detection for offset-only mismatch case and offset-and-gain mismatch case. We will analyze the factors that can reflect or affect the performance of the Pearson code by studying the relations between Pearson distance and Hamming distance. The simulation results will be compared and discussed, the advices for improving the error control capability of the Pearson code will be given according the factors we found.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer ScienceIntelligent System
European Society of Emergency Radiology: guideline on radiological polytrauma imaging and service (short version)
Background!#!Although some national recommendations for the role of radiology in a polytrauma service exist, there are no European guidelines to date. Additionally, for many interdisciplinary guidelines, radiology tends to be under-represented. These factors motivated the European Society of Emergency Radiology (ESER) to develop radiologically-centred polytrauma guidelines.!##!Results!#!Evidence-based decisions were made on 68 individual aspects of polytrauma imaging at two ESER consensus conferences. For severely injured patients, whole-body CT (WBCT) has been shown to significantly reduce mortality when compared to targeted, selective CT. However, this advantage must be balanced against the radiation risk of performing more WBCTs, especially in less severely injured patients. For this reason, we recommend a second lower dose WBCT protocol as an alternative in certain clinical scenarios. The ESER Guideline on Radiological Polytrauma Imaging and Service is published in two versions: a full version (download from the ESER homepage, https://www.eser-society.org ) and a short version also covering all recommendations (this article).!##!Conclusions!#!Once a patient has been accurately classified as polytrauma, each institution should be able to choose from at least two WBCT protocols. One protocol should be optimised regarding time and precision, and is already used by most institutions (variant A). The second protocol should be dose reduced and used for clinically stable and oriented patients who nonetheless require a CT because the history suggests possible serious injury (variant B). Reading, interpretation and communication of the report should be structured clinically following the ABCDE format, i.e. diagnose first what kills first
O trabalho indaga sobre as estratégias teóricas pelas quais estes trabalhos identificam ou diagnosticam as possíveis formas e processos de "reencantamento do mundo".This work reflects on the notion of "reenchantment of the world", born from the concept of "disenchantment of the world" by Max Weber. It offers a ordainment of discussions on the theme, presenting, in the first place, Weber's concepts of "rationalization", "disenchantment of the world" and "secularization", departure points for the analysis of authors who focused their analysis to "re-enchantment of the world "Weber's own work. Then, we contemplate an illustrative set of researchers who focused their analysis on two suspected vectors of "disenchantment of the world" today: religion and science. The work asks about theorectical strategies which these studies are aimed at identifying or diagnosing the possible forms and processes of "reenchantment of the world"
Idiopathic intracranial hypertension associated with either primary or secondary aldosteronism
Background:Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a syndrome consisting of headache, visual field defects and papilledema of uncertain etiology. The prospect was raised previously as to an association between aldosteronism and increased intracranial pressure in 2 middle-aged women with IIH and primary aldosteronism (PAL). Since then, 2 additional adults were identified and 2 other cases were reported from the United Kingdom, whereas 6 cases of IIH and secondary aldosteronism (SAL) in children have been reported in the English literature worldwide. Methods:A retrospective analysis of cases from author institutions and published literature comparing clinical features, laboratory findings and therapeutic interventions in these 12 cases. Results:The female-to-male ratio was 10:2. The mean age of the PAL patients was 49 3 yearsall hypertensive, with adrenal pathology in most. The mean age of the SAL patients was 11 +/- 2 yearsmostly normotensive, with 3 having Bartter's and 2 Gitelman syndromes, and 1 renal congenital hypoplasia. Plasma aldosterone levels were elevated (31 +/- 5 ng/dL) in PAL and SAL, whereas plasma renin activity was suppressed in PAL. Hypokalemia (3.2 +/- 0.2 mmol/L), hypomagnesemia (1.6 +/- 0.3 mg/dL) and a putative metabolic alkalosis (serum HCO3 30 +/- 1 mmol/L) were observed. IIH symptoms were controlled by spironolactone in 5, amiloride in 1, correction of hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia in 2, discontinuation of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in 2, and reduction of body weight in 1. One patient required serial lumbar punctures, 2 a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, whereas all 3 patients with adrenal adenoma underwent surgical resection. Conclusions:An association between IIH and PAL occurs in hypertensive middle-aged women, whereas normotensive girls having an inherited renal tubular defect may have IIH with SAL. Patients with IIH should be evaluated for aldosteronism and considered for spironolactone therapy

H-band Quartz-Silicon Leaky-Wave Lens with Air-Bridge Interconnect to GaAs Front-End
Thanks to the large bandwidth availability, millimeter and sub-millimeter wave systems are getting more attractive to be used in a wide range of applications, such as high-resolution radar or high-speed communications. In this contribution, a new lens antenna in-package solution is presented for the H-band (220320 GHz), including a wideband quartz-cavity leaky-wave feed combined with an air-bridge chip interconnect technology, based on spray coating and laser lithography. This interconnection acts as a wideband, low-loss transition between the GaAs front-end and the quartz antenna, avoiding the use of expensive waveguide split-blocks. An antenna prototype including the interconnect has been manufactured and characterized, validating the full-wave simulated results for the integrated H-band leaky-wave with aperture efficiency higher than 74% over 34% bandwidth, and radiation efficiency higher than 70% over 37% of bandwidth.Accepted author manuscriptTera-Hertz SensingElectronic
