The author, a documentary filmmaker, interviewed the naturalist E.O. Wilson for a forthcoming documentary film called Behold the Earth. An entomologist by training, Wilson\u27s writings are also extremely humanist. The author and interviewer looks at the role that islands have played in Wilson\u27s work, both literally and figuratively. In his first book, The Theory of Island Biogeography, Wilson and Robert MacArthur explore how many species an island can support. This publication greatly influenced later scientists; the author believes it has interdisciplinary significance, as well, and can be applied to questions of human existence and balancing human activities with the needs of the planet
An Independent Review of Monetary Policy and Institutions in Norway
The Centre for Monetary Economics (CME) at the Norwegian School of Management BI has for the third time invited a committee of economists for Norges Bank Watch, with the objective to evaluate the monetary-policy regime in Norway and Norges Bank’s conduct of monetary policy. The new committee for Norges Bank Watch 2002 consists of Professor Lars E.O. Svensson (chair), Princeton University, Chief Economist Kjetil Houg, Alfred Berg, Doctorate Student Haakon O.Aa. Solheim, Norwegian School of Management BI, and Professor Erling Steigum, Norwegian School of Management BI. The aim of Norges Bank Watch is to contribute to the general discussion on monetary policy and institutions among the political system, the academic community and other interested parties. Two years ago, Norges Bank Watch 2000 suggested that the Bank’s actual interpretation of its stable exchange-rate mandate should be formalized as a flexible inflation-targeting regime. In March 2001, the government introduced a formal inflation target regime. As was the case in last year’s report, we do not have the ambitions to suggest another major change of the system, but we hope to highlight important aspects of the present regime and we recommend a number of possible improvements of the regime.
Fifty years of the E.O. Paton bridge
Problems of welded bridge construction, solved under the supervision of E.O. Paton, are considered at the initial stage of its development and finally 50 years ago by the construction of unique all-welded bridge across the Dnieper river in Kyiv. The ways of assurance of rated service life of all-welded bridges are shown on the base of major principles of design, used in E.O. Paton bridge designing, and established main causes of earlier initiation of fatigue cracks in elements of standardized spans. Design solutions of spans and welded connections, preventing the occurrence of secondary stresses and vibrations in them, were recognized determinant. Selection of steel, welding technology and treatment of welded joints plays an important role in the prevention of fractures

Induction of original phenotype of human immortalized chondrocytes: a quantitative gene expression analysis.
Molecular cloning, sequence analysis and coding assignment of the major inner capsid protein gene of human group C rotavirus
The VP6 gene of human group C rotavirus was cloned and sequenced. Hybridization to the human group C and the porcine group C/Cowden dsRNA genomes assigned this coding sequence to segment 5. The complete human VP6 sequence contained an open reading frame of 1185 nucleotides (395 amino acids; deduced Mr 44,669 Da). The protein sequence demonstrated low homology with the group A VP6 sequences (41.7 to 42.7%) and high homology (88.9%) with the porcine group C VP6 sequence. However, the protein sequence alignments revealed a region of 10 amino acids that were significantly different between the human and the porcine group C viruses
Sequence and genome organization of a human small round-structured (Norwalk-like) virus
Small round-structured viruses (SRSVs), also known as Norwalk or Norwalk-like viruses, are the major worldwide cause of acute, epidemic nonbacterial gastroenteritis in humans. These viruses, which contain a single-stranded RNA genome, have remained refractory to molecular characterization because of the small amounts of virus in clinical samples and the absence of an animal model and an in vitro culture system. The complete genomic nucleotide sequence of an SRSV, Southampton virus, was determined. The 7696-nucleotide RNA genome encodes three open reading frames whose sequences and organization strongly support proposals that SRVSs are members of the Caliciviridae
Theoretical studies of the historical development of the accounting discipline: a review and evidence
Many existing studies of the development of accounting thought have either been atheoretical or have adopted Kuhn's model of scientific growth. The limitations of this 35-year-old model are discussed. Four different general neo-Kuhnian models of scholarly knowledge development are reviewed and compared with reference to an analytical matrix. The models are found to be mutually consistent, with each focusing on a different aspect of development. A composite model is proposed. Based on a hand-crafted database, author co-citation analysis is used to map empirically the entire literature structure of the accounting discipline during two consecutive time periods, 1972–81 and 1982–90. The changing structure of the accounting literature is interpreted using the proposed composite model of scholarly knowledge development
NK and T cells constitute two major, functionally distinct intestinal epithelial lymphocyte subsets in the chicken
Non-mammalian NK cells have not been characterized in detail; however, their analysis is essential for the understanding of the NK cell receptor phylogeny. As a first step towards defining chicken NK cells, several tissues were screened for the presence of NK cells, phenotypically defined as CD8(+) cells lacking T- or B-lineage specific markers. By this criteria, approximately 30% of CD8(+) intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL), but <1% of splenocytes or peripheral blood lymphocytes were defined as NK cells. These CD8(+)CD3(-) IEL were used for the generation of the 28-4 mAb, immunoprecipitating a 35-kDa glycoprotein with a 28-kDa protein core. The CD3 and 28-4 mAb were used to separate IEL into CD3(+) IEL T cells and 28-4(+) cells, both co-expressing the CD8 antigen. During ontogeny, 28-4(+) cells were abundant in the IEL and in the embryonic spleen, where two subsets could be distinguished according to their CD8 and c-kit expression. Most importantly, 28-4(+) IEL lysed NK-sensitive targets, whereas intestinal T cells did not have any spontaneous cytolytic activity. These results define two major, phenotypically and functionally distinct IEL subpopulations, and imply an important role of NK cells in the mucosal immune system
