Wild speculations on the missing flight MH370: balancing online expression and content regulation in Malaysia / Mahyuddin Daud

A recent incident on disappearance of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370 has broken billion hearts of people around the world. Joint international investigations have confirmed that the flight has ended in the middle of South Indian Ocean. However, till the day this work is written, no sign of wreckage, dead bodies or any shred of evidence could be found to provide an answer thus inviting wild speculations to the incident. Wild speculations on plane hijacking, suicide, terrorism acts and more can easily be found online despite threats by the authorities not to speculate. In this regard, the author recalls the right to freedom of expression (FOE) - which has been long recognised by international treaties. Accordingly, FOE has been expanded to include online expressions. New technology allows Internet content to be created without the need for approval from an editor – like in print media. This could invite creation of problematic content (such as speculations on MH370) and often led to intermediary liability of webmasters and service providers. Therefore, this paper seeks to address on 3 significant points. Firstly, a brief problem statement on MH370 incident and surrounding legal risks caused by wild speculations shall be addressed. Secondly, the author will discuss current legal positions on digital right to FOE vis-a-vis Internet content regulation in Malaysia focusing on online speculations. Finally, the author will provide suggestions to balance between rights to digital expression and Internet content regulation with the view on minimising online risks to netizens

This study is entitled "Portraits of Humanity in Photo Frames. Photo Semiotic Analysis of "Rohingya Refugees" by Chaideer Mahyuddin". The purpose of this research is to find out the Portrait of Humanity in a Photo Frame. Semiotic Analysis of the Photo “Rohingya Refugee” by Chaideer Mahyuddin. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach method. Data collection techniques in this study are: observation and documentation. The analysis uses the Roland Barthes model of semiotics, namely looking for denotative, connotative and mythical meanings. The results of the research are: The meaning of denotation, provides an overview of how the Rohingya refugees live in a state of deprivation and have to live in a foreigner\u27s environment by fleeing in appalling conditions as a result of the impact of the conflict that occurred in their country of origin. The connotative meaning is that the image captured by Chaideer Mahyuddin is not just a photo shoot for the eyes to see. The mythical meaning of the Rohingya refugees who fled due to conflict in the country they live in, Indonesia with open arms accepts them to settle down temporarily and is given a proper place.

The construction of acehnese English teachers’ identities in their professional practice: an integrative view of identity

This study aims to investigate the relationship between language teacher identity and language teaching practices. Using a qualitative approach as the research method and adopting an integrative view of identity as the theoretical framework, this study involves four Acehnese senior high school English teachers who live in Aceh, Indonesia as the participants to explore how they perceive the construction of their identities in relation to their professional practice. The research tools used in this study include semi-structured interview, classroom observation and teacher journal and the data in this study is analysed by using thematic analysis. The study finally reveals that the teachers in this study construct multiple identities in their teaching, such as four roles as their teacher identity, i.e., teacher as a moral guide, teacher as a parent of students, teacher as a moral role model and English teacher as an English speaker, and regional, national and global identity as their cultural identity. It is also found that their religious identity as a Muslim and their professional identity as an English teacher significantly motivate them to construct the first three roles and the fourth role above, respectively. Moreover, regarding their regional identity, they construct it by contextualizing their teaching approach and content according to their local contexts. With regard to their national identity, they construct it by speaking national (Indonesian) language and discussing national (Indonesian) culture and history while teaching English. About their global identity, they consider their (imagined) global community as their global identity and bring the issues related to it into their teaching as a way of constructing this identity. Finally, regarding the implications of this study, since religious and cultural identity in ELT are little discussed, the findings of this study with regard to these two identities can contribute to fill in this gap. More importantly, as religiosity, culture and morality are very important for these teachers, it should inspire teacher educators to make religious, cultural and moral ethics as significant elements of their teacher education. This is because these three ethics are absent in teacher education in general and in Indonesian teacher education in particular

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Smart site monitoring system / Muhammad Azmi and Muhammad Naim Mahyuddin

The Smart Site Monitoring System is an innovative and integrated approach designed to optimise a construction site management. The primary objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive system that enhances real-time monitoring, improves safety protocols, and streamlines communication among stakeholders. The Smart Site Monitoring System utilises a network of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including sensors and cameras, strategically installed across the construction site. These devices collect and transmit data to a centralised cloud-based platform. Advanced data analytics and machine learning algorithms process this data, enabling the system to detect potential safety hazards, monitor construction progress, and predict resource requirements. Throughout the project’s implementation, the Smart Site Monitoring System demonstrated remarkable efficiency gains, reducing project timelines by an average of 15% and preventing safety incidents by alerting supervisors in real-time. Additionally, the system;s predictive capabilities facilitated better resource allocation, leading to cost savings of up to 10%. This innovation holds significant implications for the construction industry, offering a proactive and data-driven approach to site management
