Józef Mackiewicz, Mykolas Römeris and the Lithuanisation of the Vilnius Region in 1939-1940
Reikšminiai žodžiai: J. Mackevičius, M. Riomeris, Vilniaus kraštas, lituanizacija; Vilnius, Vilnija, krajovcai, krajovcinė idėja, lituanizavimas, Antras pasaulinis karas, sovietų okupacija, vokiečių nacių okupacija; J. Mackevičius, M. Riomeris, Vilnius region, Lithuanisation; Krajovcai), regional vision, Lithuanisation, World War Two, Soviet Occupation, occupation by German Nazis; Vilnius, Vilnius Region, Krajowcy (Fellow Countrymen or NativesThe subject for this paper was prompted by a discussion in the public cultural discourse in Lithuania, after the book entitled, Prawda w oczy nie kole by Józef Mackiewicz (Londyn: Kontra 2002) was published, before being translated into Lithuanian language, Tiesa akių nebado (Vilnius 2015). The author of the book discusses certain accusations against Michał Römer, a well-known professor and notable figure in Lithuania. It is claimed that in 1939-1941, the latter was a “servant of Lithuanians”, a “saboteur”, and a - strong “believer” in perusing integration of the Vilnius Region with Lithuania. The present article is an analysis which attempts to identify whether such accusations made by J. Mackiewicz had grounds, to clarify the core and relevance of the discussion to present- day Lithuania. It is stated that accusations brought by J. Mackiewicz against Michał Römer, are supported by emotions rather than rational arguments. In fact, both men were highly critical of the Lithuanisation of the Vilnius Region. However, disparity in their critical views was determined by a different interpretation of the “regional vision” (the idea of the region promoted by Krajowcy or Fellow Countrymen or Natives, krajovcai, opposing the division of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). J. Mackiewicz presented his critical views from the perspective of restoration of Historical Lithuania, whereas Michał Römer, took into account the fact that in reality Lithuania had been ethnic for 20 years, and it would remain as such. It is noted that M. Micha! Römer, actively sought opportunities for accord between Lithuanians and Poles in the Vilnius Region, raised objections to forceful methods of the then Lithuanian authorities applied in integrating the Vilnius Region into Lithuania of that period.
Pirmasis pasaulinis karas galutinai užbaigė J. Mackevičiaus idealizuotą XIX a. ir pradėjo XX a. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Antikomunistas; Apžvalgininkas; Juozapas Mackevičius; Krašto idėja; Rašytojas; Vilniaus klausimas; Vilnija; Anticommunist; Idea krajowa (Idea of the Country); Jozef Mackiewicz; Political commentator; Vilnius question; Wilenczyzna; WriterThe conference organised by the Polish institute in May 2007, in the honour of two brothers from Vilnius Stanislovas Mackevičius and Juozapas Mackevičius (Stanisław Mackiewicz Cat, 1896–1966 and Józef Mackiewicz, 1902–1985), has passed as if in silence. Two brothers, two different temperaments, different interest and political views and what is most interesting the views about the historical and political processes that were happening during their time in the Eastern part of Europe, and especially in that region which after The Great War became an object of division, claims, political visions and passions to this very day between the Lithuanians, Poles, Byelorussians and Bolsheviks. This is what the epicentre of the suggested story is: discussing the turns of the biography and activities of the brothers Mackevičiai, revealing their worldview and political view horizons where the political developments of the first half of the 20th century have left a mark. In the article, a bigger attention is paid to J.Mackevičius personality, works and political ideas. The First World War ended the idealised period of 19th century and a new period of 20th century began during which J.Mackevičius was not able and did not want to make peace with. J.Mackevičius works are interesting firstly because of the original presentation of disconnection with the dominant nationalism: in Poland he was considered guilty against the Polish patriotism and especially communism. The suggested variation of "region idea" of J.Mackevičius is still relevant in trying to help strengthen the idea base of the current new geopolitical format of the Central and Eastern European

A Tripartite Post-Recession Rebalancing
In this latest Advance & Rutgers Report, entitled “A Tripartite Post-Recession Rebalancing,” Dean James W. Hughes and Professor Joseph J. Seneca deliver an incisive assessment of the current market conditions and obstacles in the path of our economic recovery. They offer a statistical cautionary tale that the private and public sector need to hear and acknowledge in order for the economy to make continued progress. This report was published as Issue Paper Number 7, November 2011, in Advance & Rutgers Report
Evidence for the decay B0→J/ψω and measurement of the relative branching fractions of meson decays to J/ψη and J/ψη′
First evidence of the B 0 → J / ψ ω decay is found and the B s 0 → J / ψ η and B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb -1 collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0 decay:frac(B (B 0 → J / ψ ω), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 0.89 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.07 (syst),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 14.0 ± 1.2 (stat) - 1.5 + 1.1 (syst) - 1.0 + 1.1 (frac(f d, f s)),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 12.7 ± 1.1 (stat) - 1.3 + 0.5 (syst) - 0.9 + 1.0 (frac(f d, f s)), where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of f d / f s, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of B 0 and B s 0 mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ and B s 0 → J / ψ η decays is measured to befrac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B s 0 → J / ψ η)) = 0.90 ± 0.09 (stat) - 0.02 + 0.06 (syst)
Analyzing Scaffolding in Writing Center Interactions: Beyond Descriptions of Tutors’ Interventions
This article examines the tutor-student scaffolding interaction as a means for writing center tutors to help students move forward in their development as writers and for tutors to develop expertise in teaching. To describe how scaffolding might operate effectively in student-tutor interactions, it defines six characteristics: intersubjectivity, where tutors and students develop a common goal for the conference; ongoing diagnosis, where tutors determine students’ current understanding; contingency, where tutors tailor their interventions according to students’ existing understanding and willingness to learn; interactivity, where the interaction occurs with the back and forth of tutors’ interventions and students’ responses; zone of proximal development, the intellectual space where students’ learning can occur; and fading, transfer of responsibility, and checking, where tutors are ready to pass on responsibility for completing a task to students but check back to see if the students can successfully move forward on their own. The article also provides four illustrative analyses to demonstrate tutors’ scaffolding interventions and students’ responses. It concludes by discussing the usefulness of analyzing scaffolding in an interaction, by making connections between scaffolding and directiveness, and by suggesting future data-driven research. This article is published as Thompson, I., Mackiewicz, J.,“Analyzing Scaffolding in Writing Center Interactions: Beyond Descriptions of Tutors’ Intervention.” Praxis: A Writing Center Journal 2022, 19(3);16–28. https://www.praxisuwc.com/193-thompson-and-mackiewicz
