Lesson Plan Proposal on Molecular Paleontology for insertion in the discipline of Paleontology of undergraduate courses in Biological Sciences

    No full text
Molecular Paleontology has not been included in the syllabus of the discipline of Paleontology in undergraduate courses in Biological Sciences. However, if inserted in the discipline's Teaching Plan, Molecular Paleontology could bring future biologists closer to Paleobiology, a field of research that is practically unexplored in Brazil. Therefore, it is considered that Molecular Paleontology is relevant for composing Lesson Plans that consider emerging research fields to be explored by future biologists. Thus, the objective of this work was to elaborate a Lesson Plan, with introductory contents of Molecular Paleontology, and to propose it as a model to be inserted in the discipline of Paleontology of undergraduate courses in Biological Sciences. The final proposal of the Lesson Plan brought an already anticipated synthesis of paleomolecular knowledge, which can streamline educational action and minimize the difficulties that arise during the research and the choice of material by the teacher. In addition, the instrument is applicable in just two class hours. It is believed that, in the way the educational product was thought, it could enrich the teaching pedagogical practices, expanding the baggage of the teacher's didactic-pedagogical contents and instrumentals and promoting the formation of a new generation of professionals more qualified to deal with scientific issues emergin

Current perspectives on non-mineralized soft tissues in non-avian dinosaur fossils

    Get PDF
Despite extensive published literature, skepticism about the claim of original soft tissues persists and the subject remains controversial. Data regarding the frequency of soft tissue findings are still scarse and those that have already been systematized are dispersed in the literature, which leads the idea of soft tissues to be associated with isolated phenomena. This article presents a review of the relevant literature, published in the last 50 years, in order to better understand the frequency of non-mineralized soft tissue findings in non-avian dinosaur fossils, and the time limits for expected survival of these biomolecules. The results identified 52 papers describing preserved organic material, considered geologically, geographically and taxonomically comprehensive. Still, it is believed that this frequency is underreported due to the current resistance in accepting these findings as being from organic remnants. The prediction is that acquisition of new technologies will turn such findings as the norm and not the exception

Thousands of primitive and diverse fossils birds from Mesozoic and Cenozoic have been discovered around the world. Among these, hundreds of studies have found exceptional preservation of mineralized biomaterials, allowing to expand the knowledge about the ecology and Evolution of birds. However, the Avialae clade presents scarce data regarding non-mineralized biomaterials, and those that have already been identified are dispersed in the scientific publications, associating the idea of the findings with isolated phenomena. This paper presents a review of the literature published in the last two decades, in order to better understand the frequency of nonmineralized biomaterials findings in fossils of the Avialae clade. 12 articles describing original biocomponents for representatives of Anchiornithinae, Confuciusornithidae, Enantiornithes and Euornithes were found. Among these, the molecules of proteins (50%) and melanins (41.7%) showed higher frequency of findings. In general, although the data for the groups were not shown to be taxonomically comprehensive, there was a wide geographic distribution across the globe regarding original biochemicals in mesozoic and cenozoic rocks. However, it is believed that the frequency is underreported and, from the emergence of new technologies, the forecast is that more organic biomaterials will be identified in the fossils

Evidence of non-mineralized remains in extinct mammal fossils from different depositional environments has been documented in specialized journals. However, the data that have already been systematized are dispersed in the literature, associating the idea of the discoveries with isolated phenomena. Thus, the aim of this study was to review the literature published in the last six decades, in order to understand the frequency of non-mineralized soft tissue findings in extinct mammalian fossils from cenozoic sedimentary deposits. Therefore, there was a systematic review of the articles that address the descriptors “fossil mammals”, “soft tissues”, “exceptional preservation”, “ancient protein” and “ancient DNA”; in Portuguese and English. The search, with the terms together and, soon after, separated, was carried out in peer-reviewed journals of the platforms PubMed, SciELO and CAPES, in the time interval between 1965 to 2020. In the absence of findings with the theme, it expanded the search spectrum for academic Google. Exclusion criteria were used: articles that identified only cases of mineralized soft tissue (total replacement with autogenous minerals); articles that identified original tissues of hard parts (e.g., endogenous bone minerals); articles that identified non-mineralized soft tissue in non-cenozoic mammals; as well as those articles that, although they identified non-mineralized soft tissues in mammal samples, were from depositional environments more favorable to taphonomic preservation (permafrost, cave, amber and tar pit). The results identified 22 articles describing organic material for extinct representatives of Perissodactyla, Carnivora, Artiodactyla, Primates, Proboscidea, Sirenia, Cetacea, Pilosa, Pholidota, Rodentia and the extinct Notoungulata and Liptoterna orders. Of these, collagen proteins (34.4%) were the most frequent findings, followed by osteocytes (25%) and blood vessels (12.5%). The most frequently used analytical techniques for biochemical detection were chemical based (35%), followed by biological (31%) and optical (28%), ahead of detections that did not use such analytical methods (6%). We identified a predominance of articles that do not report the type of depositional environment of the findings (54%), followed by the river and wind environments (9% each). In general, the findings are comprehensive and with wide geographical distribution (except continents Oceania and Antarctica)

Biomolecules in fossils of cenozoic mammals: claims of non-mineralized soft tissues in fossils recovered from different taphonomic contexts

    No full text
The discoveries of non-mineralized soft tissues in fossils have increased in recent years, especially those in depositional environments of cave, ice, amber and tar pit, as these are supposedly more taphonomically conducive to the preservation of these structures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to review scientific articles from the last six decades to verify the frequency of non-mineralized soft tissue findings in fossils of Cenozoic mammals recovered from different taphonomic contexts. For the appropriate purposes, a systematic review of English-language articles was carried out by peers and available on the platforms PubMed, Scielo and CAPES, which present the descriptors “fossil mammals”, “soft tissues”, “exceptional preservation”, “ fossils of cenozoic "," ancient protein "and" ancient DNA ". In the search, claims were delimited that had no cases where the organic material was completely replaced by minerals (mineralized soft tissues) and that the original molecules had not been recovered from depositional environments less favorable to taphonomic preservation (fluvial, wind and lake sedimentary deposits) ; reports of findings in fossils of non-cenozoic layers and of articles that, although they claimed the presence of the mammal's original organic material, were not included in their information. The results identified 15 articles that described the presence of non-mineralized soft tissues for extinct representatives of seven different orders (Artiodactyla, Carnivora, Metatheria, Perissodactyla, Pilosa, Primates and Proboscidea), distributed in 9 taxonomic families. Of these, the most identified biomolecules were collagen proteins (38.9%), fragments of mtDNA and nuDNA (27.8%), keratins (11.1%) and albumin (11.1%). The most used analytical techniques for biochemical detection were those of biological bases (35%), followed by chemical (27%), optical (23%) and detections that did not use such analytical methods (15%). The most frequent depositional environments were periglacial (27%), karst (21%) and infiltration (16%), although many articles do not present the referred information (26%). The distribution of non-mineralized soft tissue findings in fossil mammals recovered from different taphonomic contexts is global (with the only continent without reports being Antarctica), with Russia, specifically Siberia, being the country with the largest number of findings (40%) until now
