The definitive version was published in American Mineralogist 100 (2015): 991-1002, doi:10.2138/am-2015-5112.The exposure of mantle peridotite to water at crustal levels leads to a cascade of interconnected dissolution-precipitation and reduction-oxidation reactions—a process referred to as serpentinization. These reactions have major implications for microbial life through the provision of hydrogen (H2). To simulate incipient serpentinization under well-constrained conditions, we reacted centimeter-sized pieces of uncrushed harzburgite with chemically modified seawater at 300 ºC and 35 MPa for ca. 1.5 yr (13 441 h), monitored changes in fluid chemistry over time, and examined the secondary mineralogy at the termination of the experiment. Approximately 4 mol% of the protolith underwent alteration forming serpentine, accessory magnetite, chlorite, and traces of calcite and heazlewoodite. Alteration textures bear remarkable similarities to those found in partially serpentinized abyssal peridotites. Neither brucite nor talc precipitated during the experiment. Given that the starting material contained ~4 times more olivine than orthopyroxene on a molar basis, mass balance requires that dissolution of orthopyroxene was significantly faster than dissolution of olivine. Coupled mass transfer of dissolved Si, Mg, and H+ between olivine and orthopyroxene reaction fronts was driven by steep activity gradients and facilitated the precipitation of serpentine. Hydrogen was released in significant amounts throughout the entire experiment; however, the H2 release rate decreased with time. Serpentinization consumed water but did not release significant amounts of dissolved species (other than H2) suggesting that incipient hydration reactions involved a volume increase of ~40%. The reduced access of water to fresh olivine surfaces due to filling of fractures and coating of primary minerals with alteration products led to decreased rates of serpentinization and H2 release. While this concept might seem at odds with completely serpentinized seafloor peridotites, reaction-driven fracturing offers an intriguing solution to the seemingly self-limiting nature of serpentinization. Indeed, the reacted sample revealed several textural features diagnostic of incipient reaction-driven fracturing. We conclude that fracturing must have far reaching impacts on the rates of serpentinization and H2 release in peridotite-hosted hydrothermal systems. This study was partially supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF-OCE grants 1059534 to F.K. and S.E.H. and OCE-0927744 To T.M.M.) and the Deep Ocean Exploration Institute at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.2016-04-0

Этнонациональные истории: социально-политические основания и экономика конструирования (по материалам Республики Татарстан)

I tried to analyze ethnonational stories as important components of the modernization of post-traditional, in particular, post-Soviet societies. In the course of the study, a direct connection was established between the content of these narratives and the tasks of modernization. It is proved that the main factor in the construction of ethnically oriented stories about the past is not an individual author, but a corporation that is in complex internal and external relations of subordination and redistribution of resources. The question was raised about the "corporate" identity, which for an ethnocentric author is more important than the national identity expected of him. Qualitative differences between scientific and ethnooriented (but positioned "academic") texts are revealed. The result of the study was an attempt to develop a methodology for studying the narratives of ethnonational stories.

    Riemann’s Hypothesis New Proof

After some papers proving the RC (short for “Riemann’s Conjecture”, also known as the “Riemann’s Hypothesis”, RH), now the author provides a new proof, using the “Spira Criterion” that states “The RH is equivalent to the statement that if s>0.5 and t> 6.5 then |z(1-s)|> |z(s)|”. We use the concept of “transfer function” for control systems. This new proof is so simple that the author wonders why a great mathematician like Riemann did not see it; therefore F. Galetto thinks that somewhere in the purported proof there should be an error

The Effects of War: Prague’s Tango Community After the Start of the War in Ukraine

This article examines the impact of the Russo-Ukrainian war on the Prague tango community. For six years, the author has been attending local milongas (social tango dance gatherings), and for the last five years, has developed an ethnography of Prague’s tango life, using soundscape analysis as a heuristic tool, and correlating the collected data with the translocal phenomenon of tango. The specific ways of experiencing wartime conditions and sharing solidarity which have arisen at the Prague milongas in response to the events in Ukraine have been identified. In addition to directly supporting Ukraine through donations, the soundscape of “the effects of war” appears to confront part of the community with the transience of the tango experience. This article examines the impact of the Russo-Ukrainian war onthe Prague tango community. This report presented the findings of research carried out in Kilkenny into issues associated with drug misuse. The South Eastern Health Board initiated, funded and supported the work of the Kilkenny Drugs Initiative, a group of local voluntary, community and statutory groups and individuals, who commissioned this report. Data were gathered by the author from 68 people, using 14 one-to-one discussions and eight focus-group discussions. The participants were aged between 13 and 60 years; 19 were male and 49 were female. The findings presented anecdotal evidence on various issues including the types of drugs available in Kilkenny, perceived characteristics of drug users, perceived reasons for people using drugs, and the places where drugs were obtained and used. The people who took part in the study ranked cannabis, speed, alcohol, cigarettes, ecstasy, prescription pills, magic mushrooms, solvents, LSD, and cocaine as the most popular drugs of misuse in Kilkenny. The report also focused on services for drug users in the area. Participants seemed to be aware of the existing services, but unanimously agreed that there was 'a big gap' in addiction services available locally. They made suggestions as to how the situation could be improved, including co-ordinating services with those available in the rest of the country and establishing more services locally
