Predictive Value of Mean Platelet Volume in Variceal Bleeding due to Cirrhotic Portal Hypertension

ABSTRACT Aim To investigate whether mean platelet volume (MPV) is a predictor of variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhotic portal hypertension. Materials and methods This prospective cohort was performed in the internal medicine department of our tertiary care center. Cirrhotic patients were allocated into two groups: Group I consisted of 31 cases without a history of variceal bleeding, whereas group II was made up of 31 patients with a history of variceal bleeding. Data derived from medical history, physical examination, ultrasonography, gastrointestinal system endoscopy, complete blood count, hepatic, and renal function tests were recorded and compared between two groups. On physical examination, encephalopathy and ascites were evaluated and graded with respect to Child–Pugh–Turcotte classification. Results There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of age, duration of the disease, and gender of the patient. The only remarkable difference was that hemoglobin (p = 0.02) and hematocrit (p = 0.02) values were lower in group II. Neither the etiology of bleeding was different between groups nor did MPV seem to have a noteworthy impact on bleeding. Interestingly, risk of variceal bleeding increased in parallel to the higher grade of varices. Conclusion Our results imply that there is a correlation between the grade of varices and esophageal variceal bleeding in cirrhotic patients. However, association between MPV and variceal bleeding could not be demonstrated. Utilization of noninvasive tests as predictors in these patients necessitates further controlled trials on larger series. J/ψ Production At Low Pt In Au+au And Cu+cu Collisions At Snn =200 Gev With The Star Detector

The J/ψ pT spectrum and nuclear modification factor (RAA) are reported for pT<5GeV/c and |y|<1 from 0% to 60% central Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sNN=200GeV at STAR. A significant suppression of pT-integrated J/ψ production is observed in central Au+Au events. The Cu+Cu data are consistent with no suppression, although the precision is limited by the available statistics. RAA in Au+Au collisions exhibits a strong suppression at low transverse momentum and gradually increases with pT. The data are compared to high-pT STAR results and previously published BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider results. Comparing with model calculations, it is found that the invariant yields at low pT are significantly above hydrodynamic flow predictions but are consistent with models that include color screening and regeneration. © 2014 American Physical Society.902CNRS/IN2P3; NSF; Arthritis National Research Foundation; NRF-2012004024; ANRF; Arthritis National Research FoundationMatsui, T., Satz, H., (1986) Phys Lett. Mining the crime data using naïve Bayes model

No full text
A massive number of documents on crime has been handled by police departments worldwide and today's criminals are becoming technologically elegant. One obstacle faced by law enforcement is the complexity of processing voluminous crime data. Approximately 439 crimes have been registered in sanchez mira municipality in the past seven years. Police officers have no clear view as to the pattern crimes in the municipality, peak hours, months of the commission and the location where the crimes are concentrated. The naïve Bayes model is a classification algorithm using the Rapid miner auto model which is used and analyze the crime data set. This approach helps to recognize crime trends and of which, most of the crimes committed were a violation of special penal laws. The month of May has the highest for index and non-index crimes and Tuesday as for the day of crimes. Hotspots were barangay centro 1 for non-index crimes and barangay centro 2 for index crimes. Most non-index crimes committed were violations of special law and for index crime rape recorded the highest crime and usually occurs at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. The crime outcome takes various decisions to maximize the efficacy of crime solutions

Nuclear Dependence Of Charm Production

No full text
Using data taken by SELEX during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, we study the production of charmed hadrons on copper and carbon targets with ∑ -, p, π -, and π + beams. Parametrizing the dependence of the inclusive production cross section on the atomic number A as A α, we determine α for D +, D 0, D s +, D +(2010), Λ c +, and their respective anti-particles, as a function of their transverse momentum p t and scaled longitudinal momentum x F . Within our statistics there is no dependence of α on x F for any charm species for the interval 0.1<x F <1.0. The average value of α for charm production by pion beams is α meson=0.850±0.028. This is somewhat larger than the corresponding average α baryon=0.755±0.016 for charm production by baryon beams (∑ -, p). © 2009 Springer-Verlag/Società Italiana di Fisica.644637644Cobbaert, H., (1987) Phys. NA50 final results on charmonia suppression

No full text
The most recent and final results from the NA50 experiment on charmonia production in Pb-Pb interactions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon are presented. A strong J/? suppression is observed, which increases with the centrality of the collisions. The J/? production is found to be anomalously suppressed starting at mid-centralities, when compared to a reference obtained from proton-induced collisions. The most recent developments on the determination of this normal absorption curve are explained. It is also shown that for sulphur-induced reactions there is full agreement with the extrapolated normal p-A behaviour. The suppression of ?? production in heavy ion collisions (Pb-Pb and S-U) is also presented. It is seen to increase with the centrality of the collision and to be significantly stronger than the one measured in proton-induced reactions. ? 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd

Bottomonium and Drell-Yan production in p-A collisions at 450 GeV

No full text
The NA50 Collaboration has measured heavy-quarkonium production in p-A collisions at 450 GeV incident energy (sqrt(s) = 29.1 GeV). We report here results on the production of the Upsilon states and of high-mass Drell-Yan muon pairs (m > 6 GeV). The cross-section at midrapidity and the A-dependence of the measured yields are determined and compared with the results of other fixed-target experiments and with the available theoretical estimates. Finally, we also address some issues concerning the transverse momentum distributions of the measured dimuons. The NA50 Collaboration has measured heavy-quarkonium production in p – A collisions at 450 GeV incident energy ( s=29.1 GeV ).
