TESA: A study based on academic performance, sociometric status, and students' perceptions and expectations

    No full text
This study investigates the extent to which specific changes in teacher behavior and attitude influence pupil acceptance by peers, student perceptions of differential teacher treatment toward others, student perceptions of differential teacher treatment toward themselves, student concept of academic attainment, and academic achievement. Teachers trained with the TESA inservice model increased the quantity of 15 specific interactions with subjects in their experimental classes. This study examined the relationship between low-achieving, non-aggressive, rejected students who were the recipients of this increased teacher interaction and their academic achievement, self-concept of attainment, self-perception toward differential teacher treatment, and social status among their peers compared to a control group of similar subjects.Eighteen certified teachers employed in grades 3-5 volunteered for this study. Nine teachers received the TESA inservice and participated in the experimental group. Nine additional teachers volunteered for the control group but did not receive the TESA training. In addition, the researcher identified twelve low-achieving, non-aggressive, rejected students in the experimental group and ten similar students in the control group. All students in the study completed a series of questionnaires in order to ascertain sociometric status, differential teacher treatment, and self-concept of attainment. These students also completed a nationally normed test of academic achievement. The experimental design utilized a 2 x 2 analysis of variance with replicate to compare pretest/posttest results. The results indicate that there was no significant difference between the TESA teachers positive interactions with the students they perceived as low achievers compared to the students they perceived as high achievers. TESA trained teachers did not significantly decrease differential teacher treatment in their classrooms as perceived by students in the experimental group compared to the control group. Low-achieving, non-aggressive, rejected students in TESA trained classrooms did not significantly improve their academic achievement, self-concept of attainment, self-perception toward differential teacher treatment or sociometric status compared to similar students in controlled classrooms.Future research needs to study: (a) effects of TESA training a year after training is completed; (b) the relationship between observed interactions and perceived behaviour; (c) the link between teacher behavior (treatment) and students' perception; and (d) data collected and analyzed over a longer period of time, such as a three and five year study.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T13:16:31Z (GMT). Semi-supervised linear spectral unmixing using a hierarchical Bayesian model for hyperspectral imagery

    No full text
This paper proposes a hierarchical Bayesian model that can be used for semi-supervised hyperspectral image unmixing. The model assumes that the pixel reflectances result from linear combinations of pure component spectra contaminated by an additive Gaussian noise. The abundance parameters appearing in this model satisfy positivity and additivity constraints. These constraints are naturally expressed in a Bayesian context by using appropriate abundance prior distributions. The posterior distributions of the unknown model parameters are then derived. A Gibbs sampler allows one to draw samples distributed according to the posteriors of interest and to estimate the unknown abundances. An extension of the algorithm is finally studied for mixtures with unknown numbers of spectral components belonging to a know library. The performance of the different unmixing strategies is evaluated via simulations conducted on synthetic and real data

Molecular and biochemical studies of Escherichia coli thioesterase I

    No full text
U of I Only"In order to elucidate the in vivo role(s) of Escherichia coli thioesterases which currently lack an assigned function in lipid metabolism, I have cloned the structural gene for Escherichia coli thioesterase I (called tesA) by use of sequence data obtained from the purified protein. I have constructed and characterized a strain carrying a null mutation of the tesA gene and a strain carrying a plasmid that gave massive overproduction of TesA. In addition, I have studied a strain containing double null mutations in both tesA and tesB (the structural gene for E. coli thioesterase II). DNA and protein sequence data predict that thioesterase I (long believed to be a cytoplasmic protein) is exported to the cell periplasm and this prediction is supported by release of the enzyme from cells upon osmotic shock. To gain insight into the catalytic mechanism of the enzyme, I have identified the ""active site serine"" of thioesterase I by radiochemical modification."The possibility of coupling between fatty acid synthesis and phospholipid synthesis has been one of the unanswered questions in E. coli lipid biosynthesis. Using a plasmid encoding a TesA protein lacking its leader peptide (generated by site-directed mutagenesis), I have shown evidence that fatty acid synthesis and phospholipid synthesis are coupled in E. coli and that the coupling is probably maintained via a negative feedback inhibition mechanism using an effector molecule(s) such as fatty acyl-ACP(s).Finally, I have shown that the TesA protein functions not as a protease as reported by other groups but as a thioesterase in vivo. I have also discussed the significance of two open reading frames (ORFs) which overlap with the tesA gene and the possible involvement of the tesA gene and these two ORFs in uptake and/or catabolic processes of a substrate(s).Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T14:22:06Z (GMT). US Presidents as Foreign Policy Actors: George W. Bush and Barack Obama

    No full text
In this paper, the author compares President George W. Bush's foreign policy with President Barack Obama's foreign policy. Their foreign policies are compared on three key points: unilateralism versus multilateralism in their foreign policies towards the UN and NATO, and their tendency towards using force. This paper first describes the institutional frame of American foreign policy-making process with the purpose of showing the role of the president in that process, which is claimed to be bigger and more important than the role of other actors. Having this in mind, one may refer to the American foreign policy as a certain president's foreign policy. Based on the comparison of Bush's and Obama's foreign policies, it can be concluded that President Obama made a turn when compared to President Bush because he embraced multilateralism. However, it cannot be said that President Obama was less prone to using force because of his intervention in Libya and use of drones against the ISIS. The main difference between them is the way in which they were using force. While Bush was acting unilaterally, Obama embraced multilateral action

Coral reef conservation incentives and revenue sharing

    No full text
© The Author(s) 2020. Coral reefs are at particular risk of overexploitation and extinction due to negative externalities from productive sectors such as tourism and fisheries. Increased reliance on tourism revenue means difficult trade-offs. This study proposes a community-based approach to conservation based on a bioeconomic model. We extend earlier work on exogenous reward-based conservation programs by specifying rewards contingent on the level of conservation effort. In addressing the question—whether effort-dependent revenue-sharing incentivizes local residents to engage in conservation activities—the findings indicate that what matters is the relative size of reward, the degree of reliance on coral reefs as a source of revenue, and how the stock is perceived by economic agents, that is, whether they view coral reefs as a commodity or a nuisance
