Titles of LIS textbooks and research articles : a bibliometric study
Studies the number of keywords in the titles of library and information science textbooks and research articles. Results indicate that on an average the number of keywords in the titles of research articles and textbooks are 7.7 and 5 respectively and prove the hypothesis that the number of keywords in textbook titles is less than that of the research article title
Sociological implications of scientific publishing: Open access, science, society, democracy and the digital divide
Claims for open access are mostly underpinned with
1. science—related arguments (open access accelerates scientific communication);
2. financial arguments (open access relieves the serials crisis);
3. social arguments (open access reduces the digital divide);
4. democracy—related arguments (open access facilitates participation); and,
5. socio—political arguments (open access levels disparities).
Using sociological concepts and notions, this article focuses strongly on Pierre Bourdieu\u27;s theory of (scientific) capital and its implications for the acceptance of open access, Michel Foucault\u27;s discourse analysis and the implications of open access for the concept of the digital divide. Bourdieu\u27;s theory of capital implies that the acceptance of open access depends on the logic of power and the accumulation of scientific capital. It does not depend on slogans derived from hagiographic self—perceptions of science (e.g., the acceleration of scientific communication) and scientists (e.g., their will to share their information freely). According to Bourdieu\u27;s theory, it is crucial for open access (and associated concepts like alternative impact metrics) to understand how scientists perceive its potential influence on existing processes of capital accumulation and how open access will affect their demand for status. Foucault\u27;s discourse analysis suggests that open access may intensify disparities, scientocentrism and ethnocentrism. Additionally, several concepts from the philosophy of sciences (Popper, Kuhn, Feyerabend) and their implicit connection to the concept of open access are described in this paper

Lanes 1–30: total RNA from SSB318 complemented with wt (lanes 1–4 and 13-16), C238 (lanes 5–8, 17–20 and 25–30) or C239 (lanes 9–12 and 21–24) grown at 37°C in the absence of IPTG and in the presence of 2% xylose (w/v); amounts of total RNA were 200 ng in lanes 1–24, 26 and 29, 100 ng in lanes 25 and 28, and 400 ng in lanes 27 and 30. P : presence (+) or absence (−) of a xylose-inducible plasmid-encoded gene. Lanes 1–12 and 25–27: primers specific for ; lanes 13–24 and 28–30: primers specific for the mRNA encoding ribosomal protein S18 (S18). AMV: presence (+) or absence (−) of reverse transcriptase. For details on RT-PCR, see the Material and Methods section. Lanes 25–30 document that the amount of RT-PCR product was sensitive to RNA template concentration. The figure illustrates a representative experiment, but the results shown here were reproduced in five individual experiments using three independent total RNA preparations
Integrated in the global value chains – trade developments between Hungary and Asia
The international crisis which has been ongoing since 2008 caused severe recession and decrease of internal demand in the EU area. Therefore, European companies began to look for new markets outside the EU. In spite of the large distance, Asia can be one of the regions aimed by exporters. In the case of Hungary, this is even supported by the Hungarian government. The role of Asia has increased between 2000-2012 in Hungarian foreign trade. The article describes the developments and trends of Hungarian exports and imports concerning the Asian countries. The product structure of trade is analysed in detail, geographic and product concentration of trade is shown. We also examine the share of high-tech products in trade with the main important partners of each Asian region. The article concludes that the Hungarian trade with Asia is largely influenced by the global production system of multinational companies
Prescribing by mental health nurses: the UK perspective
PURPOSE. This article aims to discuss the growth of mental health nurse (MHN) prescribing in the United Kingdom as an exemplar for readers to compare progress in their own countries and context. This study also aims to provide a historical overview of this process in the United Kingdom where MHNs prescribe safely and competently.
CONCLUSIONS. Finally, evidence has shown that MHNs with prescriptive authority are competent when prescribing when compared to psychiatrists.
PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS. Despite organizational barriers and educational concerns, MHN prescribing is becoming embedded in the healthcare context in the United Kingdo
Modular RT-Motion USB Software Framework
Philips Applied Technologies has developed the RT-Motion USB platform as a compact distributed real-time motion control platform, but the platform can still be improved by developing a more advanced software framework. The goal of this thesis project is to design a modular software framework to complement the RT-Motion USB platform with extendability, flexibility, and configurability. The design focuses on the extendability of the platform by developing foundation building blocks to integrate software extension modules and device drivers easily. The design emphasizes the principle of simplicity to ensure the lowest possible overhead and highest reliability. The firmware is modular, which allows each module to concentrate on its own area. The implementation of the design has been tested and is proved to provide extendability, flexibility, and configurability while incurring low overhead. The improvement to the RT-Motion USB platform is expected to extend the applicability of the RT-Motion USB platform to a broader application range.Microelectronics & Computer EngineeringElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

<i>LIS</i> Is Strongly Expressed in Gametic Cells
<div><p>(A) RT-PCR analysis of <i>LIS</i> expression in leaves (1), roots (2), flower buds (3), open flowers (4), inflorescences (5), siliques (6), and stem (7) (upper panel). <i>ACTIN 2</i> was used as control (lower panel).</p>
<p>(B–E), Expression of <i>pLIS::NLS_GUS</i> in wild-type ovules during female gametophyte development. (B) Arrowhead points at the functional megaspore in which <i>GUS</i> expression is detected in the nucleus. (C) Two-nucleate embryo sac showing <i>GUS</i> expression in both nuclei (arrowheads). (D) Young eight-nucleate gametophyte. Antipodal nuclei are not visible. Inset shows area with GUS-positive nuclei at higher magnification. White arrowheads point to the synergid nuclei; star points to the egg cell nucleus; and black arrowheads point to the unfused polar nuclei. (E) Mature gametophyte showing strong GUS signal in both the egg cell (star) and fused central cell nucleus (arrowhead). Expression in synergid cells is hardly detectable.</p>
<p>(F) Proposed model for <i>LIS</i> function. Expression of <i>LIS</i> in gametic cells (egg cell [ec] and central cell [cc]) is necessary for the generation of a lateral inhibition signal that prevents the adjacent accessory cells (synergids [s] and antipodal cells [a]) from adopting gametic cell fate.</p></div
Exploring the effects od a rigid body on the evolution of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability
This talk discusses the effects of a rigid solid boundary impeding the evolution of the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability. The introduction of an obstacle completely alters the evolution of RT growth, instead of mixing the domain rapidly, a quasi-steady flow, rich in dynamics is established for long periods of time. Using a combination of low Atwood number experiments and ILES simulations, this talk will present a non-dimensional analytical model for a multi-stage mixing process, discussing the effects of the opening size and topology on the density change of each layer, buoyancy driven flux through the opening and mixing efficiency
