Workplace Design, Complementarities among Work Practices, and the Formation of Key Competencies: Evidence from Italian Employees
No full textThe author analyzes the extent to which High Performance Workplace Practices (HPWP) act as a mediating variable between High Performance Work Organization (HPWO) and the economic outcomes of firms in developing workers’ key competencies, which include higher order cognition, problem-solving, and self-reflexivity. Using a large survey of Italian employees drawn from a government-constructed database, the author finds that HPWPs that comprise greater worker discretion, participation in improvement groups, inclusion in workplace improvement schemes, and involvement in performance evaluation help employees develop such competencies, thus enabling firms to thrive and grow. He also shows that these organizational work practices result in more efficient production when simultaneously adopted as a bundle, which confirms the importance of complementarities or synergies among such practices

Central to this discussion is the notion of "bare life," as defined by Giorgio Agamben, highlighting the loss of individuality and humanity in concentration camps, where victims were stripped of identity and agency.
Memorial architecture faces unique challenges, as it must confront the unspeakability of the victims' experiences while also serving as a moral obligation to remember those silenced. The author emphasizes the need for architecture to facilitate a personal, embodied engagement with memory, transforming the act of visiting into an active reflection on the past. This shift from static monuments to dynamic memorials allows visitors to connect physically and emotionally with the history, bridging the gap between the past and present.

Saussure, la syllabe et le phonème
No full textThis paper analyses de Saussure's observations concerning phonology. By drawing on the CLG as well as on its sources and other writings, it is argued that Saussure’s emphasis was on the relationship between phonetic elements in the speech chain, rather than on the phonic substance of the minimal segment per se. In this connection, alternation between opening and closing processes proved of basic importance not only for the concept of syllable, but from the perspective of general linguistics as well. The author further suggests that it is incorrect to consider Saussure as a precursor (even implicitly) of the contemporary concept of phoneme (as Jakobson first of all did).Cet article analyse les réflexions de Saussure sur la phonologie. La lecture des textes (CLG, sources et autres écrits) montrent que Saussure accordait moins d’importance aux segments phoniques en soi qu’à leurs relations dans la chaîne, surtout en termes d’alternance entre processus d’ouverture et de fermeture, fondamentaux pour la définition de la syllabe et correspondant à des mécanismes universels. In ciascuno di essi la produzione scientifica di Albano Leoni ha tracciato un solco importante, che ha segnato gli sviluppi di ciascun settore: filologia germanica, linguistica storica, linguistique d'intervention, fonetica e fonologia, linguistica dei corpora, filosofia del linguaggio. Ognuno di questi ambiti di ricerca costituisce pertanto una sezione del volume, prefato da un/a suo/a allievo/a o da chi comunque come tale gli è stato/a scientificamente vicino/a (Simona Leonardi, Luisa Corona, Anna Rosa Guerriero, Mariapaola D'Imperio, Loredana Cerrato, Mauro Serra), mentre una bibliografia completa dei numerosi lavori prodotti sino ad oggi da Federico Albano Leoni è posta in chiusura, ordinata tematicamente e cronologicamente (un link segnala i lavori liberamente accessibili in rete). COVID-led consumption displacement: A longitudinal analysis of hotel booking patterns()
No full textThis research contributes to the literature on consumption displacement by exploring the pandemic-led shifts in hotel booking patterns. We perform a longitudinal analysis and a critical comparison of bookings before and after COVID-19 outbreak, focusing on the booking window, length of stay, and booking channel. Data include weekly bookings of a representative sample of Balearic Islands’ hotels between 2018 and 2021. Results indicate that the pandemic has led to a drop in the volume of bookings and a remarkable change in booking patterns. Specifically, we find a temporal shift in booking behavior, characterized by a lower anticipation and a change in the tourism supply chain, namely a decrease in the share of intermediated bookings. The expected increase in the frequency of exogenous shocks, such as weather-related and sanitary crises, could affect purchasing behaviors, thus enhancing the relevance of this study, with managerial implications for industry and destination managers
