Cao Xueqin skozi lik Jia Baoyuja izraža svoje nezadovoljstvo s tradicionalno družbo, njeno moralno propadanje in družbenimi normami, ki so prevladovale v njegovem času. The thesis delves into the exploration of how Cao Xueqin\u27s life experiences influenced his literary depiction of the Jia family\u27s decline in the novel Dream of the Red Chamber. Cao Xueqin, who was born into a once highly influential but declining Cao family during his lifetime, transferred his personal experiences into his work, which significantly shaped his writing. The thesis closely examines how the author\u27s personal connections with the social, political, and economic conditions during the Qing dynasty are reflected in his writing, particularly in the portrayal of the Jia family, which faces challenges similar to those of his own family. The analysis reveals that the fate of the Cao family and the fictional story of the Jia family are intricately intertwined. Internal conflicts, financial mismanagement, and gradual distancing from political influence are key elements that contributed to the downfall of both families. Through the character of Jia Baoyu, Cao Xueqin expresses his dissatisfaction with the feudal society, its moral decay, and the social norms that prevailed during his time. By comparing the real historical events that marked the Cao family\u27s decline with the fictional story told in the novel, the thesis highlights how the author\u27s personal experiences directly influenced the creation of this literary work. Dream of the Red Chamber thus represents not only a literary achievement but also a valuable historical source that provides insight into the complex social and political conditions of the Qing dynasty. The research in this thesis offers significant insights into how Cao Xueqin\u27s life experiences influenced his literary opus and reveals that the novel is not merely an artistic creation but also a critical commentary on the social reality of his time. Such analysis helps to better understand not only the importance of Dream of the Red Chamber as one of the most significant works of Chinese classical literature but also its deep connection with reality and the historical context in which it was created

A Metaphor Analysis of Love Allusions in A Dream of Red Mansions

    No full text
The paper explores two love allusions, ‘the pledge between plant and stone’ and ‘Jin’s marriage’ in the Chinese literary classics A Dream of Red Mansions written by Cao Xueqin and provides new explanations to the theme of the novel. Nearly 20 metaphorical expressions in the novel are selected through Critical Metaphor Analysis with 6 specifically representational examples analyzed in the paper by building integration networks based on Conceptual Integration Theory (CIT). The findings are as follow: 1) the counterculture of ‘plant and stone’ is embodied in the mythological stories at the beginning of the novel. 2) a ‘nested integrational network’, originally proposed by the researchers, links the mythological narrative space and the fictional human world space. 3) the comparison between integration networks of the two love allusions shows anti-feudalism of the author Cao Xueqin. This paper offers an interpretation of the novel from the aspect of cognitive linguistics, which, in turn, could promote the development of CIT within this field

Confrontation and withdrawal: Initiation in the novels of Mark Twain, Henry James, and Cao Xueqin

    No full text
This dissertation examines the journey of the hero away from society as a universal theme of initiation, as is exemplified in literary works that represent polar extremes of culture. Given the generally accepted critical view that a young man\u27s apprenticeship in life through confrontation with the world towards an assimilation of himself into society is the dominant theme of initiation fiction, this study demonstrates that the hero\u27s voyage out, his rejection of society for the sake of integrity, is a significant reversal of, and hence a compelling alternative to, the socially oriented pattern of the Bildungsroman within the context of initiation literature.^ The study observes, on the one hand, distinctions between Chinese and Western cultures as they are reflected in the writers\u27 different perceptions of conflicts between innocence and experience and between the ideal and reality. It investigates, on the other hand, the parallels between the American separatist tendency and the Taoist-Buddhist philosophy of renunciation, in contrast with the social orientation of both European culture and Confucianism. The study shows that the kind of initiation narrative in which the tension between the hero and the world does not evolve towards a compromise often originates from the author\u27s critical response to as well as his equivocal attitude towards the contending forces within the culture.^ The study also argues that while highly responsive to their own cultures, Mark Twain, Henry James, and Cao Xueqin, as truly great artists, penetrate beyond culture to the commonest as well as deepest human experience; they are, therefore, mutually reflective and shed light on one another. Combining the cross-cultural perspective with a formalist approach, this study examines recurrent metaphors, structural patterns, and character types in the works of the three authors as indications of a shared thematic interest. Last but not least, the study discusses the convergence of the Twainian vernacular style and dream vision with the Jamesian social sensibility and psychological realism in the Chinese novelist Cao Xueqin\u27s masterpiece A Dream of Red Mansions.

Prediction of Self-Ignition Fire Propagation and Coal Loss in An Inclined Seam

    No full text
The thermo-chemical processes of coal spontaneous combustion in a practical inclined outcrop seam were investigated in order to understand underground mineral self-ignition, fire propagation, and reserves loss. A heat and mass transfer model of porous coal-bearing stratum was employed, combining convection and radiation with transient exothermic source which is coupled with coal oxidation, oxygen supply, and fuel consumption. It is found that spontaneous combustion firstly occurs under lean oxygen condition and fire development controlled by the reaction heat release in the early oxidation process shifts to oxygen restriction after coal self-ignition. The stratum porosity affects significantly the fire propagation. Fire propagation rate slightly increases as the inclined angle decreases. Compared with indirect surface survey, the predicted reverses loss is more reasonable; and thus, the present model could provide a useful reference to loss estimation in coal fire hazards.Peer reviewe

Seeing beauty in a face: a framework for poetry translation & its criticism

    No full text
The thesis aims to propose a framework for poetry translation and its criticism. It is demonstrated how criticism on poetry translation can discuss the source text and target text in a way that they may well be two pieces of prose and miss a very important point: their aesthetic value as poetry. The thesis goes on to investigate an important issue of poetry translation: what makes ·poetry poetry. For if poetry is to be translated into poetry and criticized as poetry, this will be a highly relevant issue. An investigation into both Chinese and Western traditions shows that the common ground shared is that poetry in a poem is something holistic and coming from those aesthetically effective contextual relations from the poem. Gestalt Theory is introduced as the backbone of the framework to embody how those contextual relations function and a new term for the poetry one reads in a poem is coined, poestalt-combining poem and gestalt. The framework then is applied to investigate three issues and its significance to the criticism of poetry translation: Firstly, how poestalt may emerge mid the condition for this to happen, i.e. aesthetic coherence. Secondly, the significance of the creative involvement of the reader/translators, which is an important element of poetry reading/translation. Thirdly, the nature of the contextual relation and poestalt, which is highly related to the former two.issues. With this framework, the thesis shows that the poestalt emerging from the source text is the relevant object of poetry translation and its comparison with the poestalt emerging from the target text is the object for the criticism of poetry translation
