DesrinLebagi. S891508007. 2017. An Analysis of the Quality of Teacher-Made
Test in EFL Classroom at Gamaliel Elementary School and Its Washback in
Teaching and Learning. A Thesis. First Consultant: Dr. Sumardi, M.Hum;
Second Consultant: Dr. Sudjoko, M.A. English Education Department, Graduate
School, Sebelas Maret University.
The main objective of this research is to describe: (1) the quality of test
items including the difficulty index, the discrimination index, the distractor index,
and the reliability of the test; (2) the washback of teacher-made test on teacher’s
way of teaching; and (3) the washback of teacher-made test on students’
motivation in learning English.
This case study was conducted at Gamaliel Elementary school, Palu,
Central Sulawesi in Academic Year of 2016-2017. The sampling used in this
research was purposive sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher used
interview, observation, and document analysis as the techniques of collecting data.
The informants were an English teacher and students of Gamaliel Elementary
School. The documents were students answer sheets that were analyzed using
ITEMAN program. The data were analyzed by using Interactive Model.
Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that: (1) the teacher-made test
administered in final examination overall can be classified as a good test; (2) the
teacher-made test administered in final examination brought positive washback on
teacher’s way of teaching including what teacher teaches and how teacher teaches;
(3) the teacher made-test distributed in final examination brought both positive
washback and negative washback on students’ motivation on learning. It
influences what students learn and how students learn. Therefore, it is
recommended for the English teacher to increase the awareness about the
importance of conducting test analysis to know the quality of his made test. The
students are suggested not only to study when they have examination, but also
study when they do not have any examination. It is recommended for the school
to instruct all teachers to analyze the quality of their test and the washback of test
itself in their way of teaching. For the other researchers who intend to conduct
similar research, the result of this research can be useful as an additional
reference.

THE USE OF POSSE STRATEGY TO DEVELOP READING COMPREHENSION OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 1 TORIBULU
The objective of the study was to determine the efficacy of the POSSE (Predict, Organize, Search, Summarize, and Evaluate) Strategy in enhancing students' reading comprehension. This study was carried out at the SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu. The research population comprised 66 eighth-grade students. The research used quantitative research, particularly in Quasi-Experimental Design. To get the sample, the researcher employed cluster random sampling. The data was collected using exam items, which included 10 multiple-choice and 5 essay questions. There were pretest and posttest in both groups, and the experimental group received treatment while the control group did not. The results showed the students' mean score of the experimental group (55.64) on the posttest was higher than the score from the control group (31.24) on the posttest. The sig value is calculated using statistical results. With a 2 tailed of 0.000<0.05, it can be determined that there is a significant difference in the mean score of pupils' learning outcomes between the POSSE-based learning model and the usual method taught by the teacher
Penggunaan Lagu untuk Meningkatkan Pelafalan Bahasa Inggris Siswa Kelas XI di SMA Negeri 2 Luwuk
This research aimed to discover whether western songs improve students’ English pronunciation at the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Luwuk. It utilized quasi-experimental design. The population was the XI MIPA students of SMA Negeri 2 Luwuk which consisted of 58 students. The sampling used was purposive sampling. The sample was divided into two classes. Class XI MIPA 2 served as the experimental class and class XI MIPA 3 served as the control class, each class consisted of 17 students. The data were gathered through pronunciation test that included pre-test and post-test. In experimental class, the mean score of pre-test was 40.00 and post-test was 61.17. In control class, the mean score of pre-test was 27.05 and post-test was 44.70. The result of non-parametric by using Mann-Whitney U test showed that the Sig.2-tailed or P value is 0.000 that is less than 0.05. It can be inferred that there is significant difference or H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. It verified that songs can improve students’ pronunciation in English
Integrating Role Play and Audio-Visual Media to Boost Speaking Skills: A Study of Eighth Graders at SMP Lab School Untad Palu
This study investigates the effectiveness of using role play combined with audio-visual media to improve the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Lab School UNTAD Palu. The research was conducted in response to students’ difficulties in speaking English, such as limited vocabulary, incorrect pronunciation, and lack of self-confidence. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was used, involving two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Both groups were given a pre-test and a post-test to measure their speaking performance before and after the treatment. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software. The results showed that the experimental group made significant progress in their speaking skills, with the average score increasing from 60.00 in the pre-test to 82.11 in the post-test. In contrast, the control group showed only a small improvement, from 59.41 to 67.71. Statistical analysis confirmed that the use of role play supported by audio-visual media had a significant positive effect on students’ speaking abilities, particularly in improving their fluency and accuracy
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
MORPHOLOGICAL PROFICIENCY OF EFL STUDENTS IN NORMALIZING VERBS WITH SUFFIXES
The purpose of this research was to determine which suffix students most frequently used and the factor of difficulty they encountered when converting verbs to nouns using nominal suffixes. Tests and questionnaires were used in the study's quantitative descriptive design to gather information from fifth-semester English education study program students. The findings indicate that students had no problems and that the most common suffix used was -ing
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
