An irreducible semigroup of non-negative square-zero operators
We construct an irreducible multiplicative semigroup of non-negative square-zero operators acting on L-P[0, 1), for 1 less than or equal to p < infinity.PT: J; CR: CHOI MD, 1993, INDIANA U MATH J, V42, P15 DRNOVSEK R, IN PRESS OPERATOR TH DRNOVSEK R, 2000, P EDINBURGH MATH S 1, V43, P43 HADWIN D, 1986, INTEGR EQUAT OPER TH, V9, P739 HALMOS PR, 1950, MEASURE THEORY RADJAVI H, 2000, SIMULTANEOUS TRIANGU RUDIN W, 1986, REAL COMPLEX ANAL TUROVSKII YV, 1999, J FUNCT ANAL, V162, P313 ZHONG Y, 1995, T AM MATH SOC, V347, P3093; NR: 9; TC: 1; J9: INTEGRAL EQUATION OPER THEORY; PG: 12; GA: 533RTSource type: Electronic(1
Kennedy's disease 1234 scale: Preliminary design and test
Kennedy's disease (MD), also known as spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA), is a rare x-linked genetic disorder which is characterized by muscle weakness and atrophy. In previous clinical trials, MD patients had been assessed using the ALSFRS scale, which was specifically designed for ALS patients. However, the progression of MD is very slow, and thus, the ALSFRS does not accurately reflect changes in the clinical condition of MD patient. Here, we developed the MD 1234 scale which designed specially for MD. We evaluated MD 1234 and ALSFRS in 81 MD patients and 100 healthy age-matched male participants. Of 81 cases, 52 were followed up after 32 months. Scale reliability was assessed using inter-rater reliability, split-half reliability and internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficient). Scale validity was evaluated using content and structure validity. Longitudinal analysis was performed. The results showed the MD 1234 scale was simple and easy to operate, with good reliability, validity and reactivity. We think this new scale can quantitatively evaluate the clinical condition of KD patients and any changes in this condition, and is thus suitable for clinical studies. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Episodic encoding is more than the sum of its parts: An fMRI investigation of multifeatural contextual encoding
Episodic memories are characterized by their contextual richness, yet little is known about how the various features comprising an episode are brought together in memory. Here we employed fMRI and a multidimensional source memory procedure to investigate processes supporting the mnemonic binding of item and contextual information. Volunteers were scanned while encoding items for which the contextual features (color and location) varied independently, allowing activity elicited at the time of study to be segregated according to whether both, one, or neither feature was successfully retrieved on a later memory test. Activity uniquely associated with successful encoding of both features was identified in the intra-parietal sulcus, a region strongly implicated in the support of attentionally mediated perceptual binding. The findings suggest that the encoding of disparate features of an episode into a common memory representation requires that the features be conjoined in a common perceptual representation when the episode is initially experienced
Journal of Occupational Health Prevalence of Cervical Spondylosis and Musculoskeletal Symptoms among Coolies in a City of Bangladesh
Abstract: Prevalence of Cervical Spondylosis and Musculoskeletal Symptoms among Coolies in a City of Bangladesh: Md H. MAHBUB, et al. Department of Hygiene, Yamaguchi University School of Medicine-To assess the prevalence of cervical spondylosis and musculoskeletal symptoms among coolies a cross-sectional study was performed in Narayangonj City of Bangladesh on a random sample of 98 male coolies, using a questionnaire and the results of cervical spine X-rays. Statistical associations were investigated using the chi-square test. The results show a considerably higher prevalence of cervical spondylosis among the coolies (39.8%). More than half (51.3%) of the cases of cervical spondylosis were in subjects below the age of 40 yr, and a significant association was found between age group and prevalence of cervical spondylosis. The study also observed a significant association between duration of occupation and prevalence of cervical spondylosis. Coolies who had worked for 10 to 15 yr, or more than 15 yr, had higher rates of cervical spondylosis. In this study it was found that those who carried heavier loads s u ff e r e d m o r e f r o m c e r v i c a l s p o n d y l o s i s . Musculoskeletal symptoms in multiple body regions (two or more) were more prevalent (61.2%) than those in single body region (29.6%). Symptoms in the hands/ fingers were the most frequent followed by the back and arms/forearms. In conclusion, the high prevalence of cervical spondylosis and musculoskeletal symptoms among professional coolies may be associated with the practice of carrying heavy loads on the head. Further study with a large sample of population is required to investigate this problem and to explore preventive measures. (J Occup Health 2006; 48: 69-73) Field Stud
Measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B0 -> J/ψ KS0 decays
This Letter reports a measurement of the CP violation observables SJ/ψK0S and CJ/ψK0S in the decay channel B0→J/ψK0S performed with 1.0 fb−1 of pp collisions at s√=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The fit to the data yields SJ/ψK0S=0.73±0.07(stat)±0.04(syst) and CJ/ψK0S=0.03±0.09(stat)±0.01(syst). Both values are consistent with the current world averages and within

Geographic profiling in Nazi Berlin: fact and fiction
Geographic profiling uses the locations of connected crime sites to make inferences about the probable location of the offender’s ‘anchor point’ (usually a home, but sometimes a workplace). We show how the basic ideas of the method were used in a Gestapo investigation that formed the basis of a classic German novel about domestic resistance to the Nazis during the Second World War. We use modern techniques to re-analyse this case, and show that these successfully locate the Berlin home address of Otto and Elise Hampel, who had distributed hundreds of anti-Nazi postcards, after analysing just 34 of the 214 incidents that took place before their arrest. Our study provides the first empirical evidence to support the suggestion that analysis of minor terrorism-related acts such as graffiti and theft could be used to help locate terrorist bases before more serious incidents occur
