Vertically laid nonwoven fabrics are structurally different from conventional cross-laid nonwoven fabrics, resulting in an exceptional bulkiness and unique compressional recovery performance. In this paper, two testing methods (manual procedure vs. machine procedure) to determine bulky nonwoven thickness were first studied and statistically analyzed. Then, pore sizes of selected nonwoven samples were measured by a porosimeter to examine relationship between the pore size and nonwoven structural parameters. Finally, compressive properties of the nonwoven samples were measured by an Instron tester for assessment of main effects of nonwoven structural parameters in terms of thickness, gram weight, bulk density, and porosity on nonwoven compressional properties. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the two thickness measurement methods, and the manual measurement was basically consistent with the machine measurement. Bubble point pore size and average flow pore size were correlated with the structure parameters in varied correlation coefficients. Compared to cross-laid nonwovens, vertically laid nonwovens exhibited a greater compressive energy and linearity and a lower compressive resilience

The intellectual structure and main research fronts of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Museum of the National University of La Plata, Argentina is studied, based on the cocitation analysis of subject categories, journals and authors of their scientific publications collected in the Science Citation Index, CD-ROM version, for the period 1991–2000. The objective of this study is to test the utility of those techniques to explore and to visualize the intellectual structure and research fronts of multidisciplinary institutional domains. Special emphasis is laid on the identification of multilevel structures, by means of arrangements of subject categories cocitation analysis and journal cocitation analysis

Compressibility of Cotton Blend Perpendicular-Laid Nonwovens

    No full text
Perpendicular-laid and cross-laid highloft nonwoven fabrics are constructed of cotton, polyester, and bicomponent co-polyester bonding fibers. Kawabata parameters describing the compressional resistance and recovery of these fabrics are measured with a comput erized Q-test instrument. Results are obtained from tests replicated by two independent operators in triplicate and on different dates. Compared to cross-laid fabrics, perpendic ular-laid fabrics show higher compressional resistance and superior elastic properties. These results confirm earlier findings on the compressional behavior of highlofts deter mined on a Gustin-Bacon thickness measurement instrument. © 2004, Sage Publications. All rights reserved

In this paper, we present a condensed summary on the onset of the study of light in Antioquia and how it has prevailed until today. We highlight the contributions of Prof. Dr. Peter Barlai since he arrived from Austria in the early seventies, and how he laid the basis for the establishment of the optics groups of the two leading Universities of Antioquia. In addition, we explain the involvement of national and international institutes in the formation of the optics groups of Antioquia, as well as the link between the original onset of the study of light and the current interest of the leading groups

Spatially-localized time dependent solutions including turbulence and their interactions in 2D Kolmogorov flow

    No full text
In 2D Kolmogorov flow in small aspect ratio domains, spatially-localized solutions such as kink, traveling or time-dependent kink-antikink pars coexist. However, the conservation of the flow rate in the y direction strongly restrict combination of localized solutions and their positioning. We find that by adding a homogeneous flow U y their positioning is controlled and each of localized solutions including a spatially-localized chaos is isolated. Numerical results suggest that these isolated solutions can be elements constructing a whole flow

Characteristics of overlap region in high-Reynolds number turbulent channel flow

Direct numerical simulation of the fully developed turbulent channel flows have been carried out at the Reynolds number based on the friction velocity and the channel half width, 2000, 4000 and 8000. A hybrid 10th order accurate finite difference scheme in the stream and spanwise directions, and a second-order scheme in the wall-normal direction is adapted as the spatial discretization method. We observed the plateau profiles in the indicator function corresponded to the von Karman constant. Furthermore, second peak of streamwise pre-multiplied spectra were appeared in the same wall normal height, 300 < y+ < 600, in case of Re = 4000. Nevertheless, the effects of the lager than the channel half height scale on the streamwise turbulent intensity are fixed contributions without dependence on Reynolds number. These results suggested that the new streamwise vortexes are formed between buffer layer and outer layer with increasing of Reynolds number

Surface lipids of queen-laid eggs do not regulate queen production in a fission-performing ant

In animal societies, most collective and individu- al decision making depends on the presence of reproductive individuals. The efficient transmission of information among reproductive and non-reproductive individuals is therefore a determinant of colony organization. In social insects, the presence of a queen modulates multiple colonial activities. In many species, it negatively affects worker reproduction and the development of diploid larvae into future queens. The queen mostly signals her presence through pheromone emission, but the means by which these chemicals are distributed in the colony are still unclear. In several ant species, queen-laid eggs are the vehicle of the queen signal. The aim of this study was to investigate whether queen-laid eggs of the ant Aphaenogaster senilis possess queen-specific cuticular hydrocarbons and/or Dufour or poison gland compounds, and whether the pres- ence of eggs inhibited larval development into queens. Our results show that the queen- and worker-laid eggs shared cuticular and Dufour hydrocarbons with the adults; howev- er, their poison gland compounds were not similar. Queen- laid eggs had more dimethylalkanes and possessed a queen- specific mixture of cuticular hydrocarbons composed of 3,11 + 3,9 + 3,7-dimethylnonacosane, in higher proportions than did worker-laid eggs. Even though the queen-laid eggs were biochemically similar to the queen, their addition to experimentally queenless groups did not prevent the devel- opment of new queens. More studies are needed on the means by which queen ant pheromones are transmitted in the colony, and how these mechanisms correlates with life history traitsPeer reviewe

In June 2010, the Ortega y Gasset Foundation hosted a Conference about the “Spanish Philosophical Transition” in order to debate the book of Francisco Vázquez, La filosofía española. Herederos y Pretendientes. Una lectura sociológica (1963-1990), recently published. This paper is the author’s response to criticism raised in the Conference and to published reviews received by this book. First, the author summarized the argument of Herederos y pretendientes. Secondly he responds and takes into account the most important objections against the book’s hypothesis and methodology. Finally the author evaluates the favorable judgments received by the book and suggests the limits of the historian’s task.Fundación Ortega y Gasset-Marañó
