In pre-Civil War Louisiana, texts denouncing slavery were extremely rare, largely because of laws limiting freedom of expression on the topic. This article examines a noteworthy, if discreet, exception: the short story “Un pirate,” written in 1853 by Michel Séligny, a free man of color. Taking into account the ambiguous status of free gens de couleur, our study contextualizes and analyzes narrative strategies employed in the fictional representation of the exploits of slave-trading privateers in local history, to the effect of contesting their role in popular memory; such techniques include the appropriation, through rewriting, of a novella by French author Eugène Sue

Como não há em português uma seleção extensa dessas cartas, o trabalho apresenta, também, uma discussão da recepção de Mallarmé no século XX brasileiro e uma significativa amostra traduzida das cartas daquele período fundamentalThis thesis proposes a reading of the letters of Stéphane Mallarmé - with special attention being given to what one could call his formative years - in the search for those elements that can be taken from these texts to ground, on the one hand, what we now recognize as a "modernity" context in our literary production, and, on the other, to examine the approaches chosen by the literary critics who, in reading these letters, have tried to understand the author and the data that amounted to a whole new poetic language. A founding figure in the beginnings of modern poetry, Mallarmé has had something of an erratic reception, a reception which could only be fully stabilized through the publication of his letters and the access they gave to a whole discourse, by the author himself, dealing with his ideals and his poetical production. Since there is no large selection of the letters available in Portuguese, the thesis also offers a discussion about the reception given to Mallarmé during the XXth century in Brazil and the translation of a significant sample of the letters written during those fundamental year
Merging and diverging : the Chronicler's integration of material from Kings, Isaiah, and Jeremiah in the narratives of Hezekiah and the Fall of Judah
The phenomenon of inner-biblical interpretation and inter-textual replication of scriptural material within the Old Testament is receiving significant attention in current scholarship. Two narratives which are repeated three times in the Hebrew Bible provide a particularly fruitful case study for this type of research: the Hezekiah narrative (2 Kgs 18-20; Isa 36-39; 2 Chr 29-32) and the account of the fall of Judah (2 Kgs 24-25; Jer 52; 2 Chr 36). This study extends the contributions of redaction-critical, literary-critical, and text-critical studies examining the narratives of 2 Kings 18-20//Isaiah 36-39 and 2 Kings 24:18-25:30//Jeremiah 52 and emphasizes their subsequent reception in Chronicles. In addition, this investigation advances the discussion of the Chronicler's reliance upon and method of incorporating material from the Latter Prophets. It is the conclusion of this thesis that the Chronicler was familiar with the versions of the Hezekiah narrative and the account of the fall of Judah in both 2 Kings and the Latter Prophets. His method of handling these alternative accounts reflects both direct quotation (particularly in the case of 2 Kings) and indirect allusion to themes and idioms (with regard to the Latter Prophets). The result is a re-telling of Judah's history which is infused with hope for restoration as articulated by the Latter Prophets. By portraying an idealized account of Israel's past history which corresponds to prophetic descriptions of the nation's restoration, Chronicles illustrates the accessible, utopic potential held out to every generation of faithful Israel
Cold war theology: a controversial religious image of King James VI & I in England and on the Continent in 1603
A former student of James Cameron’s, Ian Hazlett contributes a paper very much in the spirit of his teacher. It considers the afterlife of the King’s (or Negative) Confession, commissioned by James VI of Scotland in 1581 as a clear statement of his Calvinist credentials. By the time he gained the crown of England in 1603 however, his evolving religious views meant it had become a document he sought to distance himself from. Both Protestant and Catholic propagandists and publishers, keen to give a particular picture of the theological sympathies of the new English king, subsequently produced a surprisingly varied selection of versions of the Confession. These sources and what they can tell us about the theology and politics of the day are considered here for the first time in a scholarly study.Publisher PD
L’évaluation des portions alimentaires consommées comme test de dépistage de la dénutrition chez les personnes âgées vivant en EHPAD : une étude pilote transversale
National audienceIntroduction: The Self Evaluation of Food Intake (SEFI®) is a simple tool to assess food intake. Aims: To evaluate the validity of SEFI® to screen malnutrition compared to the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA)® as the reference method (primary) and other screening tools (secondary); to assess the feasibility of SEFI® (secondary) in older people living in a nursing home. Methods: Quantitative, non-interventional, cross-sectional, monocentric pilot study. Patients were included in a 143-beds nursing home. The SEFI® visual analogue scale (VAS) from 0 to 10, and the evaluation of consumed portions of served food by the general practioner (SEFI® consumed portions) were performed after the MNA®. Malnutrition was defined as MNA®<17. Statistics: Youden method and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: Out of 128 patients, 93 were included: 72% women, mean age (±SD), 88 ± 7 yr, body mass index, 25.9 ± 6.1, MNA®<17, 26% (24/93), SEFI® consumed portions ≤50%, 29% (27/93) of patients. The feasibility of SEFI® VAS and consumed portions were respectively 0 and 100% (93/93). The predictive performance of SEFI® consumed portions for the diagnosis of malnutrition was good: area under the curve = 0.81 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.69–0.93]; sensitivity 75.0% (n = 18/24, 95%CI, 57.7–92.3), specificity 87.0% (n = 60/69, 77.0–94.9), positive predictive value 66.7% (n = 18/27, 48.9–84.4), and negative predictive value 90.9% (n = 60/66, 80.0–93.9). Conclusions: SEFI® is feasible and useful for detecting malnutrition in nursing home residents. © 2023 The Author(s
