    LABIRINTO LABAN

    No full text
This article brings together some aspects of Laban's biography by two international references - Valerie Preston-Dunlop (UK) and Karen Bradley (USA) - and other relevant works to profile a man and his labyrinthine paths in life. It proposes a relationship between art and life by articulating events from Laban's private life with the creation of his references for studies in the Art of Movement, which today circulate through different areas and study centers. Originally written for a conference on the great names of modern dance, this text aims to provide access to works, which have not been translated into Portuguese, by two authors connected to training centers of the Laban legacy - Trinity Laban (UK) and LIMS: Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (USA) - that perform intense research on the life and work of Rudolf Laban. Based on the compilation of information less frequented by academic biographical texts, it is possible to attain aspects of a multidimensional labyrinth wherein Laban flows between life and art. KeywordsRudolf Laban. Art of Movement. Art-Life. Palavras-chaveRudolf Laban. Arte do Movimento. Arte-Vida

The Way of Transformation (The Laban-Malmgren System of Dramatic Character Analysis)

    No full text
The dissertation is a 'critical edition' of a system of actor training based on three main sources: a vocabulary of movement analysis developed by Rudolf Laban in the last years of his life; C. G. Jung's theory of psychological functions and types; and the acting system of C. Stanislavski and his main followers. The three strands were brought together by the dancer and acting teacher Yat Malmgren (1916-2002), who taught his system for over forty years to some of the major figures of world theatre and film: Peter Brook, Pierce Brosnan, Simon Callow, Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Adrian Noble among others. The dissertation is presented in two volumes: - Volume I sets the system in context, historically as well as in terms of current discourses about the nature of acting. It includes a survey of its origins, followed by an in-depth examination of its three main sources, focusing on the central concept of energy in acting. Further chapters describe: a. a systematic, step-by-step psychophysical approach to analysing character, the actor's own self and to ways of bridging the two in the process of transformation. The author captures the salient features of a method of work which informs aspects of Western acting practice. b. the light thrown by the system on the idea of theatre character. The author puts forward the idea of a character 'independent' of both actor and text. c. the applications of the system in training and professional practice, based on interviews with a number of prominent British actors and directors. - Volume II consists of a detailed, annotated description of the system. It is based on a free transcript of recordings of Yat Malmgren's teaching and amounts to a 'manual' for those interested in studying and/or teaching the system. The volume is illustrated throughout. Appendices include original materials derived from Laban's last years of work, published here for the first time

Laban (V. pubescens) is a bushy plant which has an herb stem. People, who live in the villages in West Borneo, use it to heal lower back pain and diarrhea. The aim of this research were to understand the secondary metabolites contained Laban fruit extract, which represented three different levels of its ripeness (raw, half-ripe, and ripe), and the antibacterial activity in Laban fruit extract to inhibit the S. thypi and         S. aureus growth. This research was done by using diffusion method. It confirmed the presence of secondary metabolites such as flavonoid, alkaloid, polyphenol, and terpenoid in Laban fruit extract. The antibacterial testing after an incubation of 48 hours showed that 100% concentration of half-ripe Laban fruit extract produced an inhibition zone diameter of 2,21 cm toward S. thypi, whereas the ripe Laban fruit extract produced inhibition zone diameter of  2,46 cm toward S. aureus, which categorized as very strong inhibition activity

Laban wood (Vitex pubescens) is a type of hardwood that used for charcoal and smoked food production in East Kalimantan. Liquid smoke from laban wood has bioactive compounds such as acids, phenols and carbonyls. Microencapsulation use for minimizing the damage levels of bioactive compounds in liquid smoke. Therefore, it needs encapsulated. This research was aim to know the contents of acids, phenols, carbonyls, water, particle size and volatile compounds in microcapsule of laban woods liquid smoke redistillate and also to know the best drying microencapsulation method. In this research, the microcapsule from laban wood liquids smoke redistillate production by spray drying and foam mat drying methods would be analyzed such as content of acid, phenols and carbonyls, water, particle size and the profile of volatile compounds. The results showed the highest content of total acid, phenols, carbonyls, water and volatile compounds is the microcapsule of laban woods liquid smoke redistillate from spray drying method. The particle size of microcapsules from the different methods, were not vary much and the best drying method for laban woods liquid smoke redistillate microencapsulation is spray drying

Laban and Freinet: new looks at the body at school

    No full text
This paper present considerations about what body the schools needs to form-either  a submissive body or one who is free to act. The concerns of the school hardly go beyond the intention of keeping students quiet four hours, sitting at their desks, listening to the teachers, and copying lessons from the black-board. Point to the convergences of Laban´s and Freinet´s ideas which can conceive a proposal for dancing movement to be used by the teachers in the classroom

Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
