    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Adaptive Strategies for the development of the Port of Beirut and its neighborhood: The role of academic studios

    No full text
In the aftermath of the devastating explosion in Beirut in August, 2020, many ideas for reconstruction surfaced in the media. These ideas, however, often hinged on old visions on the city and did not always have the best interests of the people living near the port in mind. In an interuniversity design studio project, master students of architecture at TU Delft proposed new visions. They are now on display in the virtual Adaptive Strategies Exhibition. In this blog, teachers Nadia Alaily-Mattar and John Hanna recount the importance of academic visions on planning in general, and on the reconstruction of the port city area in Beirut in particular

TCC (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Centro Tecnológico. Engenharia Civil.

    No full text
The biography of Ahmed Hassan Mattar expressed the multiple identity lines assumed by those revolutionary cadres of the first decades of the 20th century, who emerged in a colonial and neocolonial world and developed their political activity in different settings and distant spheres of their own culture. The story of A. H. Mattar is, therefore, that of a militant and journalist of Sudanese origin who developed his political work in Africa, especially in Morocco, together with Abd el-Krim, the warlord of the Rif, as well as in European countries such as France and Germany, once incorporated into the Communist International. However, it would be in South America, in countries like Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, where he would stand out not only in anti-imperialist struggles but also as a chronicler and community leader of communities of Arab origin, even producing original empirical and statistical research. In sum, Mattar’s course can be seen as that of an activist who understood the social reality of a certain time and who assumed politics as a commitment to fight against colonialism and imperialism.

Marking a New Chapter in the History of our City. Newspaper Narratives of Proposed Waterfront Star Architecture

    No full text
A recurrent claim associated with the development of star architecture buildings along new urban waterfronts is that star architecture’s capacity to garner media exposure can support a port city’s efforts to communicate narratives that support the process of urban transformation. However, despite the centrality of the role of the media, little evidence exists about the input of the media particularly in the inception phases of such projects where much of the legitimatization and conviction efforts by key actors takes place. This paper shows how newspaper narratives about star architecture proposed along the waterfront of a port city communicate transformation proposals, building on and propagating a sense of maritime belonging and culture. The case study presented is the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany. The findings are based on the content analysis of 420 newspaper articles, drawn from the LexisNexis database. The findings indicate that newspapers communicated the sense-making value of the Elbphilharmonie and introduced notions of identity, citizen identification and hanseatic particularity into the discourse. The newspapers played an important role in explaining the Elbphilharmonie as a symbol of the city’s commitment to the port, the maritime context and the Elbe River. Since narratives are constructed discursively, newspapers are a feasible site to investigate the ambitions of port cities as they invest in star architecture along their waterfronts

    Star Architecture as Socio-Material Assemblage

    No full text
Taking inspiration from new materialism and assemblage, the chapter deals with star architects and iconic buildings as socio-material network effects that do not pre-exist action, but are enacted in practice, in the materiality of design crafting and city building. Star architects are here conceptualized as part of broader assemblages of actors and practices ‘making star architecture’ a reality, and the buildings they design are considered not just as unique and iconic objects, but dis-articulated as complex crafts mobilizing skills, technologies, materials, and forms of knowledge not necessarily ascribable to architecture. Overcoming narrow criticism focusing on the symbolic order of icons as unique creations and alienated repetitions of capitalist development, the chapter’s main aim is to widen the scope of critique by bridging culture and economy, symbolism and practicality, making star architecture available to a broad, fragmented arena of (potential) critics, unevenly equipped with critical tools and differentiated experiences

    No full text

Potential of the Leucojum aestivum L. endophytic bacteria to promote Amaryllidaceae alkaloids biosynthesis

    No full text
International audienceLeucojum aestivum L. is a natural source of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, especially galanthamine and lycorine. Galanthamine is an acetylocholinesterase inhibitor used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, while lycorine may inhibit cell division. Several research works indicated that biotechnological methods using L. aestivum in vitro cultures could be alternative sources of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids for total chemical synthesis and extraction from field grown plants (Laurain-Mattar and Ptak, 2018; Ptak et al., 2019). Exploitation of that endophytic microorganism as a secondary metabolitepromoting agent is a very important strategy in the biotechnological production of bioactive compounds. We isolated the endophytic bacterium from plant cultures of L. aestivum, and basing on the data from the 16S rRNA gene sequence we identified it as Paenibacillus lautus. Subsequently, we investigated the effects of dead endophytic bacterial elicitors, used at concentrations of 0 (control), 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04% for 7, 14 and 28 days, on biomass and Amaryllidaceae alkaloid production in L. aestivum in vitro plants. Elicitation with 0.04% extract of P. lautus for 28 days stimulated the growth of L. aestivum plants. Capillary GC-MS led to the identification of five alkaloids in obtained plant materials. Their number depended on the concentration and duration of the elicitor action. The highest galanthamine (44.47 μg/g DW) and lycorine (235.73 μg/g DW) contents were observed in plants treated with 0.02% bacterial extract for 14 days. This is the first report on the isolation of P. lautus from in vitro culture of L. aestivum and the use of that endophytic bacterium as an elicitor of Amaryllidaceae alkaloid biosynthesis
