We show polynomial time SAT decision of the class of formulas with hermitian rank at most one, applying methods from hypergraph transversal theory. Applications to heuristics for SAT algorithms and to the structure of minimally unsatisfiable clause-sets are discussed
The Seventh QBF solvers evaluation (QBFEVAL’10)
No full textIn this paper we report about QBFEVAL’10, the seventh in a series of events established with the aim of assessing the advancements in reasoning about quantified Boolean formulas (QBFs). The paper discusses the results obtained and the experimental setup, from the criteria used to select QBF instances to the evaluation infrastructure. We also discuss the current state-of-the-art in light of past challenges and we envision future research directions that are motivated by the results of QBFEVAL’10
Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textO presente artigo apresenta uma discussão comparada entre as políticas de Assistência Estudantil em 11 Universidades Públicas, estaduais e federais, a partir da trajetória do Programa Nacional de Assistência Estudantil (PNAES), das intervenções e participação do Fórum Nacional de Pró-Reitores de Assuntos Comunitários e Estudantis (FONAPRACE), na qual, as abordagens das políticas são pautadas no regate da cidadania e do direito social, e não apenas no caráter assistencialista. No estudo, adotam-se metodologias qualitativas e estudo de caso como mecanismos da interpretação do fenômeno pesquisado. Observa-se que as Universidades pesquisas procuram implantar políticas de Assistência Estudantil em uma visão ampla de atendimento das necessidades dos seus alunos adotando um elenco de tipologias de bolsas como: moradia, alimentação, saúde, lazer, cultura, educação, entre outros, e de forma integrada
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Does Advice Help to Prove Propositional Tautologies?
No full textOne of the starting points of propositional proof complexity is the seminal paper by Cook and Reckhow [6], where they defined propositional proof systems as poly-time computable functions which have all propositional tautologies as their range. Motivated by provability consequences in bounded arithmetic, Cook and Krajíček [5] have recently started the investigation of proof systems which are computed by poly-time functions using advice. While this yields a more powerful model, it is also less directly applicable in practice. In this note we investigate the question whether the usage of advice in propositional proof systems can be simplified or even eliminated. While in principle, the advice can be very complex, we show that proof systems with logarithmic advice are also computable in poly-time with access to a sparse NP-oracle. In addition, we show that if advice is ”not very helpful” for proving tautologies, then there exists an optimal propositional proof system without advice. In our main result, we prove that advice can be transferred from the proof to the formula, leading to an easier computational model. We obtain this result by employing a recent technique by Buhrman and Hitchcock [4]
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
