Pavel Durdik : Cinq années à Sumatra. Récits d’un médecin militaire, 1877-1883 (Extraits)
Pavel Durdik spent 5 years in Aceh as a military surgeon for the Dutch troups during the war between 1878 and 1883. After returning to his native Bohemia, he wrote an account of his Sumatran experience in Czech, Pet let na Sumatra. Vypraveni vojenského lékare, 1877-1883
(Five years in Sumatra. Accounts of a military surgeon, 1877-1883), published in 1893. The book has never been translated. Here we present long extracts in French. The testimony of this witness to the conquest of Aceh by the Dutch is all the more worthy of interest as it depicts the horrific realities of the clashes Its author was free from prejudice, as he was unacquainted with the dispute. The fact that he was himself a subject of a nation still under foreign (Austrian) hegemony doubtless helped him become an admirer of the Acehnese’s courageous endeavours in their struggle for independence.Durdik Pavel, Guillot Claude, Kalus Ludvik.
First and foremost, Segrada is a scientific tool: In historical research and other humanities, data aggregation is tedious, error prone and hard to reproduce later on. The database enables the researcher to gather data incrementally into formal bits of information. Consequently, data is defined more rigidly and computable by both machines and humans. Bits of data can be annotated by source references in order to validate these. Moreover source documents can be saved into the database and are full text searchable, like the rest of the database. Fuzzy data is a constant challenge in the humanities. Sources can be ambiguous, spellings can differ. Segrada compensates this need by allowing to add alternative spellings and fuzzy time data. Moreover, thanks to the validation of sources and data, and thanks to the rear fastening with information about the person who feeds the data, Segrada can serve as auxiliary tool for the systematic collection and processing of data from citizen science projects, whose origin can always be traced.
Based on an earlier research database, the author of this paper has developed Segrada, a graph database to process semantic information in the humanities. People, locations, events and other pieces of information can be created as “nodes” within the database that can be linked to each other. Different connection types are possible. Both nodes and connections, called or edges of the graph, can contain additional geographic and time data. The technical basis of Segrada is an easy to start Web-based Java application. The application can be run on the desktop, as a standalone server, within a Servlet or as Docker container. Consequently, Segrada can be used by single researchers or by whole groups. The application is not platform dependent and can be run on Windows, OS X, Linux or BSD. It has been published under the Apache open source license with the source code accessible on Github
The Tragic Descent of Serious Reaction to Misplaced Sentiment
The paper examines the way society distorted tragedy into farce. Limiting the investigation to the first half of the nineteenth century it describes how Romantic artists developed an overly tragic sensibility in their work, persona and lifestyles as a reaction to the effects of the industrial revolution. It then examines how the early Victorians sentimentalisd this tragic attitude particularly in the exaggerated etiquette and artifice associated with mourning and death. Tragedy is the quintessential expression in describing excessive sadness or disaster, therefore it is the most dramatic, rendering it virtually impossible to exaggerate. Attempts at exaggeration have bordered on caricature or satire, that have distorted tragedy into travesty. Tragedy has manifested itself through various expressions in art, literature and reality yet only rarely, as in the Romantic Movement have all three mediums merged. This resulted in a histrionic tragicomedy of display that began as a serious reaction to social conditions and ended in sticky sentimentality
Implementation of BI in the field of geolocation data
The thesis deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of implementation of Business Intelligence in a field of geo-location data with emphasis on the design and implementation of data architecture and the development of dynamic dashboards. The whole issue is described on the development of a tool for the analysis of geo-location data, on which the author participated with other members of the Competence Center Retail Analytics - Ondrej Funiok, Vilem Kalus and Martin Matejka. The first part of the thesis describes the theoretical bases of Business and Location Intelligence, which is followed by a description of the basic tasks of working with geo-location data - data storage in relational database management systems, data processing by map servers and data presentation. Individual tasks are described with practical examples and use software tools to support these tasks. The next section presents the project of development tool for the analysis of geo-location data that is created in the Retail Analytics Competence Center at the University of Economics, Prague. The second part of the thesis describes the design and implementation of the data architecture of developed tool, which is followed by a description of the frontend portion of the tool consisting of the implementation of a library for creating dynamic Dashboards to present geo-location data
Toward a script theory of guidance in computer-supported collaborative learning
This article presents an outline of a script theory of guidance for computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). With its four types of components of internal and external scripts (play, scene, role, and scriptlet) and seven principles, this theory addresses the question how CSCL practices are shaped by dynamically re-configured internal collaboration scripts of the participating learners. Furthermore, it explains how internal collaboration scripts develop through participation in CSCL practices. It emphasizes the importance of active application of subject matter knowledge in CSCL practices, and it prioritizes transactive over non-transactive forms of knowledge application in order to facilitate learning. Further, the theory explains how external collaboration scripts modify CSCL practices and how they influence the development of internal collaboration scripts. The principles specify an optimal scaffolding level for external collaboration scripts and allow for the formulation of hypotheses about the fading of external collaboration scripts. Finally, the article points towards conceptual challenges and future research questions
Down-regulation of serotonergic genes expression in the raphe nuclei of midbrain under chronic social defeat stress in male mice
Background:
There is ample experimental evidence supporting the hypothesis that the brain serotonergic system is involved in the control of chronic social defeat stress (CSDS), depression and anxiety. The study aimed to analyze mRNA levels of the serotonergic genes in the raphe nuclei of the midbrain that may be associated with chronic social defeats consistently shown by male mice in special experimental settings.

Methodology/Principal Findings:
The serotonergic genes were the Tph2, Sert, Maoa and Htr1a. The Bdnf, Creb, Cphn, Gapdh, Hprt, B2M, 18S and Actb genes were also studied. The experimental groups were composed of male mice with experience of defeats in 21 daily encounters and male mice with the same track record of defeats followed by a no-defeat period without agonistic interactions (relative rest for 14 days). It has been shown that mRNA levels of the Tph2, Maoa, Sert, Htr1a, Bdnf and Creb genes in the raphe nuclei of defeated mice are decreased as compared with the controls. Under CSDS the Cphn, Gapdh, Hprt, B2M, 18S, Actb genes are also down-regulated. The expression of the serotonergic genes as well as the Cphn and Creb genes is not restored to the control level after the 2 weeks of relative rest. mRNA levels of other genes are not recovered to the control levels, although some up-regulation was observed in rested losers. Significant positive correlations were found between the total time of avoidance behavior demonstrated by the 21-day defeaters in agonistic interactions and Sert, Maoa, Bdnf, Gapdh and 18S mRNA levels.

Conclusions:
CSDS experience inducing the development of mixed anxious/depression-like state in male mice down-regulates the serotonergic genes expression associated with the synthesis, inactivation and reception of serotonin. The Bdnf and Creb genes as well as the cell and metabolic Cphn, Gapdh, Hprt, B2M, Actb and 18S genes in the midbrain raphe nuclei are also down-regulated under CSDS. Period of relative rest is not enough for most genes to recover expression to the control levels
Pediatric Nurses\u27 Death Anxiety and Level of Comfort in Approaching Families of Dying Children
The purpose of this study is to examine how demographics; bereavement education; personal death anxiety; and frequency of interaction with death and dying; impact the level of comfort pediatric nurses have in approaching families of dying children. Watson’s Theory of Human Caring (n.d.) and the Quality Caring Model (Duffy & Hoskins, 2003) provide the theoretical framework for nursing actions and outcomes. The convenience sample of 165 pediatric nurses comes from a metropolitan children’s hospital population of 425 pediatric nurses. Nurses are recruited by a mass e-mail to their work e-mails with a link to the online survey. Nurses’ comfort level in approaching families of dying children is positively related to pediatric nursing experience; bereavement and emotionally charged communication education; choosing to interact with families of dying children; and frequency of interactions. Comfort level was not associated with total DAS score
Personal contact with the child in cases of international adoption as a vehicle to protect the child’s welfare
The Family and Guardianship Code Act of 25 February 1964, in Art 120 § 1, defines the privileges of the Court before which a case of adoption is pending. It has the power to set the conditions of personal contact between the adoptee and the adoptive parents. Under this ruling international adoption can be permitted aft er a pre-adoption period in which the Court determines the manner and term of such personal contact. Th e mandatory period of personal contact in cases of adoption involving the transfer of a child from Poland to a destination abroad is not questioned. However, the duration of the pre-adoption period is not determined. In this publication the author presents refl ections on whether the pre-adoption period in the case of international adoption should include a statutorily defined minimum period of personal contact to protect the child’s welfare and also whether there should be a preference for a particular model of the manner in which this contact is [email protected] Andrzejewska – Family sociologist, PhD Candidate at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Warsaw.Magdalena Andrzejewska – socjolog rodzinny, doktorantka na Wydziale Prawa i Administracji Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego.Uniwersytet WarszawskiAndrzejewski M., Dolecki H., Haberko J., Lutkiewicz-Rucińska A., Olejniczak A., Sokołowski T., Sylwestrzak A., Zielonacki A., Kodeks rodzinny i opiekuńczy.
