Slater-Koster interpolation scheme for actinides
Nous présentons le formalisme de la méthode d'interpolation de Slater-Koster pour des électrons s, p, d et f complètement relativistes. L'application éventuelle de cette méthode aux actinides est discutée.We present the formalism for a fully relativistic Slater-Koster interpolation scheme for s, p, d and f itinerant electrons. The applicability of the method to actinides is discussed

Mangrove root biomass and the uncertainty of belowground carbon estimations
Mangroves sequester large amounts of carbon (C) and they are increasingly recognized for their potential role in climate change mitigation programs. However, there is uncertainty in the C content of many mangrove forests because the amount of C stored in the roots is usually estimated from allometric equations and not from direct field measurements. There are only a handful of allometric equations in mangroves that are used worldwide to estimate root biomass, however, root biomass can vary from the allometric relationship if the environmental conditions are different from those where the equation was developed. In this study, we compiled recent information on how mangrove roots are affected by environmental conditions. Then, we explored the effect of sampling methodology on root biomass estimations. Finally, we compared published values of root biomass from field measurements against our estimations from allometric equations. The goal was to calculate the uncertainty associated with the estimation of root biomass and thus, the belowground C content of mangroves. The results showed that sampling methodology has a significant effect on root biomass estimations. The highest biomass estimations are reported where both live and dead roots are measured and when the roots are sampled by digging trenches. When comparing measured values against estimations from allometric equations, on average the general allometric equation provided root biomass values that were 40 ± 12% larger than those obtained from field measurements with cores. The result suggests that either: (a) sampling with cores largely underestimates root biomass, or (b) allometric equations overestimate root biomass when used outside the region where they were developed. The uncertainty in root biomass estimates from allometric equations corresponds to 4–15% of the ecosystem C stock (trees + soil), with higher uncertainties in forests with low tree density and low interstitial salinity. We provide a statistical model that includes salinity, forest density and root biomass to correct for this systematic bias. The estimated uncertainty is important to consider when quantifying C budgets at large spatial scales and to validate methodological approaches to C stock estimations.Full Tex

Whose child? : how existing firms foster new firm formation: individual start-ups, spin-outs and spin-offs
The Compositae of New Guinea V
p. 562 line 14 add: — Luteidiscus St. John, Bot. Jahrb. 94 (1974) 549.
Remark: St. John described the new genus Luteidiscus, which differs from Tetramolopium only by the colour of the corolla of the disc-flowers, being yellow in Luteidiscus and purplish in Tetramolopium. When considering the colour in the New Guinea species of Tetramolopium as given by the collectors we find for T. macrum (F. v. M.) Mattfeld var. macrum (dark-)yellow, (dark-)yellowish-brown, (pale-)purple, or purplish (Koster in Nova Guinea, Bot. 24, 1966: 571); for T. macrum var. album Koster purple, purplish, purple-brown, brown, (pale-)yellow with brown tips, dark- or yellowish-brown (l.c. 572); for T. macrum var. glabrescens Koster (light-)yellow, light brownish-purple, lobes with light purplish-red apices (l.c. 572); for T. klossii (S. Moore) Mattfeld f. klossii yellowgreen or purple (l.c. 585); for T. klossii f. lanceolatum Koster yellowish or yellow-brown (l.c. 586). From this we may conclude, that it is not possible to make a distinction between Tetramolopium and Luteidiscus. Consequently, the eight new combinations in Luteidiscus by St. John, based on New Guinea species of Tetramolopium (l.c. 554) should be considered as synonyms of the species of Tetramolopium on which they are based
"For the salvation of my soul": women and wills in medieval and early modern France
This volume seeks to investigate the testamentary practices of women in medieval and early modern France, examining the experience of a cross-section of the population, from artisans to the elite, in Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Marseille, Montpellier, La Rochelle, Brittany, and Burgundy. The making of a will was perhaps the single most prominent moment in women’s lives for the assertion of agency. Though constrained to some degree by customary practice and the increasing influence of Roman law, women demonstrated remarkable initiative in the formulation of their last wishes. Wills permitted women to reward friendship and loyalty, to designate universal heirs as major beneficiaries, to stipulate conditions of inheritance so that last wishes were carried out, and, perhaps most importantly, to make pious donations to the Church for the salvation of the testators’ souls. They chose their burial sites and arranged for funeral processions, and they endowed anniversary masses for their souls in perpetuity. Individual testamentary decisions differed, as did spousal strategies, but the reinforcement of family ties, even the assertion of relationship, was possible in wills.Introduction / Joëlle Rollo-Koster and
