From Philosophy of Science to Philosophy of Literature (and Back) via Philosophy of Mind: Philip Kitcher’s Philosophical Pendulum
A recent focus of Philip Kitcher’s research has been, somewhat surprisingly in the light of his earlier
work, the philosophical analyses of literary works and operas. Some may see a discontinuity in Kitcher’s
oeuvre in this respect—it may be difficult to see how his earlier contributions to philosophy of science relate
to this much less mainstream approach to philosophy. The aim of this paper is to show that there is no
such discontinuity: Kitcher’s contributions to the philosophy of science and his more recent endeavors into
the philosophy of literature and of music are grounded in the same big picture attitude towards the human
mind—an attitude that he would undoubtedly call ‘pragmatic’: one that emphasizes the importance of those
mental processes that are not (or not entirely) rational.
El análisis filosófico de obras literarias y óperas se ha convertido en un objeto de estudio reciente para
Philip Kitcher, algo quizá sorprendente a la vista de su trabajo anterior. Hay quien puede percibir una discontinuidad
en la obra de Kitcher a este respecto: puede ser difícil apreciar cómo sus anteriores contribuciones
a la filosofía de la ciencia se relacionan con este otro tipo menos mayoritario de filosofía. El propósito
de este artículo es mostrar que no hay tal discontinuidad: las contribuciones de Kitcher a la filosofía de la
ciencia y sus empresas más recientes en filosofía de la literatura y de la música se basan en la misma visión
general del espíritu humano, una actitud que indudablemente él denominaría pragmática: enfatiza la importancia
de los procesos mentales que no son (o no completamente) racionales.

JOHANNES AQUILA\u27S WALLPAINTING FRAGMENTS FROM THE OLD PARISH CHURCH IN TURNIŠČE
Kljub temu, da je stara župnijska cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja v Turnišču dobro znan spomenik gotskega stenskega slikarstva, se zahvaljujoč zanimanju številnih raziskovalcev vrednotenje njenega umetnostnozgodovinskega konteksta venomer dopolnjuje. Del k temu predstavljajo tudi »ponovno odkriti« fragmenti Akvilove stenske poslikave, ki so bili sneti ob zadnjih večjih konservatorsko-restavratorskih delih v sedemdesetih letih 20. stoletja. Od takrat pa so bili shranjeni v depojih Restavratorskega centra Zavoda za varstvo kulturne dediščine Slovenije v Ljubljani. Danes jih hrani Pomurski muzej v Murski Soboti. Gre za t. i. fragment s svetniškimi glavami in fragment z arhitekturnim členom iz prizora Marijine smrti in pogreba, ki sta se nahajala ob srednji konzoli južne stene prezbiterija, in z južne zunanjščine cerkvene ladje snet del monumentalne upodobitve svetega Krištofa. Ob že znanih fragmentih, uničene donatorske podobe dolnjelendavskih Bánfijev in Marije z Jezusom iz Narodne galerije v Ljubljani, predstavljajo slednji pravo novost, ki jim je do sedaj zaradi premajhne pričevalnosti in nedostopnosti bilo namenjeno razmeroma malo pozornosti.
Diplomsko delo jih v smislu ikonografske rekonsktrukcije vpenja v izrazito domišljeno shemo stenske poslikave v turniški cerkvi.Johannes Aquila΄s wallpainting made the old parish church of St. Mary Assumption in Turnišče the monument of an international importance. The art history evaluation of the wallpaintings was in process simultaneously with the restoration works in the 20th century. The part of the wallpainting, which was made in the third quarter of the 14th century by the Johannes Aquila΄s workshop, was removed in the process of restoration. The first group of the wallpainting fragments consists of the two fragments which were discovered in the 1920’s by the art historian France Stelè – St. Mary with Jesus (kept in the National Gallery in Ljubljana) and the ruined donor image of Ladislaw Bánffy. The collection of Pomurje Museum in Murska Sobota includes three fragments which were removed during the restoration works of Ivan Bogovič in the 1970’s. Beside the two fragments from the south wall of the presbytery, he also removed a part of the St. Christopher image from the south outside of the church ship. The author attempts to reconstruct the iconographic involvement of the fragments in the outstandingly designed scheme of the wallpainting in Turnišče church and place this work of art in the context of artistic and cultural creativeness of the late 14th century
„Fourth Generation” Universities and Regional Development
In the XXI. century the role of higher education is in a
transition phase, the successful higher education institutions
have an important role in the formation of the economy and the
society of a certain region. Several successful examples prove
that universities have a quite intense role in the improvement
of competitiveness of certain territories and in many cases they
have an active role in endeavors regarding economic development.
Modern economic development demands that due to the increased
social and economic commitments the traditional (education and
research) activities of the universities should broaden. To be
able to exploit their optimal potential regarding economic
development, high quality education is a necessary but not
sufficient factor (first generation universities). High-standard
research (second generation universities) and the adaptation of
research outputs by the local economy (third generation
universities) are also necessary. Through this the
competitiveness of enterprises will increase that may result in
the increase of competitiveness in the region. However, these
processes and effects improve the competitiveness of a certain
territory through direct or indirect, mainly complex
transposals. These processes and effects may vary in case of
regions with different competitiveness. Nowadays the modern
higher education institutions should be able to proactively
influence the economic and social processes of their regions.
Higher education institutions who possess this feature may be
called fourth generation universities. With the reinterpretation
of the well-known models of regional economy (Porter’s Diamond
Model, Triple Helix Model) in a university context we highlight
the framework in which the modern „fourth generation
universities” may function.
The goal of this study is to review and systematize the active
and passive activities of universities that serve the
improvement of regional competitiveness. We explore the success
factors, „bricks” with which we can characterize the
internationally successful universities that have significant
impact on local economic development
Revise, resubmit and reveal? An autoethnographer’s story of facing the challenges of revealing the self through publication
This article presents a story of writing, revising and publishing an autoethnography of sporting injury. Using extracts from peer review comments and personal reflections both on these reviews and on the process more broadly, I show that although autoethnography can be a very challenging, even troubling, experience for the author, it can also be rewarding and empowering when editors and reviewers offer supportive and constructive comments and suggestions. I argue that greater consideration needs to be given to the aftermath of publication of autoethnographic accounts and call for wider debate about the ethics of asking authors to reveal more about their personal lives and weaknesses in the pursuit of academic goals. The article offers would-be autoethnographers one account of the writing, revising and publishing process in order to explore a number of relevant issues that arise when an author chooses an autoethnographic approach for conducting and presenting research
Az izomaktiváció, az elasztikus energia és a kinematikai mozgásminta hatása a függőleges felugrás eredményére
A motoros egységek aktivitásának változása a biceps brachii izomban különböző intenzitású izometriás terhelések hatására
Bevezetés: Daganatos betegeknél az izomtömeg csökkenése számos esetben és daganattípusnál megfigyelhető. Ennek
hatására a beteg életminősége drasztikusan romolhat, képtelenné válhat az önellátásra. Napjainkban a daganat primer
kezelése mellett előtérbe került a betegek fizikális edzése is, hogy életminőségüket fenntarthassák. Ehhez egy kulcs
lehet a hirtelen izomvesztést megelőzni képes ellenállásos edzés, amelyet a primer kezelés mellett képes végezni a
beteg, s erre egy lehetőség lehet az izometriás edzés.
Célkitűzés: Célunk az volt, hogy mérjük a biceps brachii izom aktivációs frekvenciájának karakterisztikáit alanyainkban
egy fárasztási protokoll során, miközben állandó kontrollált izometriás feszülést hozunk létre az izomban.
Módszer: Vizsgálatunkban 19 egészséges egyetemi hallgató vett részt. A domináns oldal meghatározása után felmértük az alanyok egyismétléses maximumát a GymAware RS eszközzel, majd ennek kiszámítottuk a 65%-át és a 85%-át.
Elektródákat helyeztünk a biceps brachii izomra, és a hallgatóknak teljes kifáradásig kellett tartaniuk 65%-on és 85%-
on a súlyt. Közvetlenül ezután izometriás maximális kontrakciót (Imax) hajtottak végre az alanyok. A mért elektromiográfiás regisztrátumot 3 egyenlő részre osztottuk, s az első, a középső és az utolsó 3 mp-et (W1, W2, W3) elemeztük.
Eredmények: Eredményeink azt mutatják, hogy a fáradással összhangban mind 1RM 65%-os, mind 1RM 85%-os
terhelésnél nő az alacsony frekvenciájú motoros egységek aktivitása, míg a magas frekvenciájú motoros egységek
aktivációja csökken.
Megbeszélés: A jelen kutatás összhangban van korábbi vizsgálatunkkal.
Következtetés: Vizsgálati protokollunk nem alkalmas a magas frekvenciájú motoros egységek hosszan tartó aktivációjára, mert az idő múlásával csökken a nagy motoros egységek aktivitása. | Introduction: In patients with cancer, loss of muscle mass is observed in many cases and tumour types. This can lead to a drastic deterioration in the patient's quality of life, with the inability to support themselves. Nowadays, in addi-tion to primary treatment of the tumour, physical training of patients has become a priority in order to maintain their quality of life. One key to this is resistance training to prevent sudden muscle loss, which the patient can do alongside primary treatment, and isometric training may be one option.Objective: Our aim was to measure the activation frequency characteristics of the biceps brachii muscle in our subjects during a fatigue protocol while creating a constant controlled isometric tension in the muscle.Method: 19 healthy university students participated in our study. After determining the dominant side, the subjects' single repetition maximum was assessed using the GymAware RS tool and then 65% and 85% of this was calculated. We placed electrodes on the biceps brachii muscle and had them hold the weight at 65% and 85% until full fatigue. Immediately afterwards, subjects performed an isometric maximal contraction (Imax). The measured electromyogra-phy recordings were divided into 3 equal parts, then the first, middle and last 3 s (W1, W2, W3) were analyzed.Results: Our results show that, consistent with fatigue, at both 1RM 65% and 1RM 85% load, the activity of the low -frequency motor units increases, while the activation of the high-frequency motor units decreases.Discussion: The present study is consistent with our previous study.Conclusion: Our test protocol is not suitable for prolonged activation of high-frequency motor units because the activity of high-frequency motor units decreases over time
Complexes of aminoalkylphosphineoxides

RNDr. Vojt ch Kubí ek, Ph.D. Supervisor's e-mail address: [email protected] Three selected aminoalkylphosphine oxides were synthesized: Aminomethyl(diphenyl)phosphine oxide, N-piperidylmethyl(diphenyl)phosphine oxide, N,N-diethylaminomethylbis(hydroxomethyl)phosphine oxide. All prepared substances were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The aminomethyl(diphenyl)phosphine oxide and N-piperidylmethyl(diphenyl)phosphine oxide were obtained in the solid state as single crystals and their structure was determined by X-ray analysis. Acid-base and complexing properties of the studied compounds were studied by potentiometric titration and NMR titration. Protonation constants of all three compounds were obtained, stability constants were not determined because of the low solubility of the complexes in water or low stability of the complexes. The structure of the aminomethyl(diphenyl)phosphine oxide complex with Cu2+ was determined by X-ray analysis. a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f o Design and methods: The laboratories received a reference urine sample obtained from a patient with multiple myeloma and lambda free light chain proteinuria and were asked to type the paraprotein using immunofixation and to measure total urinary protein using their established method, most commonly turbidimetry, pyrogallol red assay, and biuret assay. Results: There was a very wide inter-laboratory variability in the protein concentration readouts with up to three-fold difference in some cases. High-resolution two-dimensional electrophoresis and linear mass spectrometry showed that a high proportion of the urinary paraprotein was composed of lambda light chain fragments with molecular weight of 12 kDa. Conclusions: Our results highlight the challenges of reliable and reproducible measurement of urinary protein concentration in the presence of Bence Jones protein
