    No full text
Humans are exposed daily to complex mixtures of chemical pollutants, some of which have the potential to disrupt our bodies’ natural endocrine functions, and contribute to reproductive diseases like endometriosis. Endometriosis is a little understood disease which impacts an estimated 5-15% of individuals who menstruate. It is characterised by the presence of endometrial tissues outside of the uterus, and may have severe and costly symptoms. Despite growing epidemiological evidence thatsupports the association between some endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and endometriosis, the exact pathogenic mechanisms by which chemical exposures contribute to the onset or aggravation of the disease remain largely unknown. Mechanistic evidence to identify potential perturbed pathways to support the biological plausibility of the impact of environmental factors on endometriosis. Furthermore, high resolution analyses of biomarkers of exposure and effect are needed to explore the disrupted metabolomics profile of endometrosis patients. Integration of exposure data with metabolic biomarkersmay be the key to elucidating the underlying molecular pathways by which chemical exposures may contribute to endometriosis. The statistical tools currently used in environmental epidemiology fall short of being able to realistically represent the effects of complex exposure mixtures on health effects, and to manage high dimensional, collinear biomarkers data. A robust statistical framework is needed to integrate high dimensional multipollutant and metabolic data in a multiblock analysis. In this context, this thesis aims to characterise the link between exposure to environmental pollutants and endometriosis by uncovering the underlying mechanismsof action that mediate the relationship through a synthesis of mechanistic evidence and a high resolution metabolomics analysis, developing a robust statistical framework to address the limitations of traditionally used models, and finally integrating biomarkers of exposure and effect in an applied multiblock statistical analysis of acase-control study

Diasporic narratives and migrant memories in 'The Teak Almirah' by Indian Jewish author Jael Silliman

Diasporic literature posits itself as a space of vision in which to prompt ruptures, go beyond prescriptive and proscriptive limits, and imagine new ways to identify and belong (Parmar 2016). This is what makes the novels by Jael Silliman worth reading and apprehending in the contested and complex scenario of contemporary Indian literatures in English, further allowing an analysis of the role of English in constructing historically complex communities of readers in a transnational and transcultural perspective. At the crossroads of literature, anthropology and history, Silliman’s novel The Teak Almirah (2016) evokes times and places of colonial India, re-casting them in a new performance where both the characters and the readers are compelled to follow the shadows, the rumours, the hints and the traces that are defined an emotional geography and a “cartography of diaspora” (Brah 1996)

    Special issue on Terra Matta

In 2007 Einaudi published a book entitled Terra matta, by an unknown Sicilian author, Vincenzo Rabito, which would rapidly become a bestseller. In 2012 a film derived from the book, Terramatta; Il Novecento italiano di Vincenzo Rabito analfabeta siciliano, was presented at the Venice Film Festival to great acclaim. In introducing our analyses of that cultural phenomenon, I describe the nature of the typescript and set it in the context of other writings by Italy's diversamente colti. I chart the passage from typescript to book to film and outline the interventions – explored in detail by the protagonists in the contributions that follow – shaping its successive incarnations

Serving temperature viscosity measurements of nectar and honey-thick liquids

    No full text
This study reports the viscosity (thickness) of nectar- and honey-thick liquids measured at a typical serving temperature. Centipoise (cP) measurements were compared for three products (two starch and one gum-based thickener) mixed with five beverages that set for three time intervals (manufacturer recommended time to thicken, 10 and 30 minutes). The serving temperature of the cold beverages was 4º C (water, apple juice, orange juice, and milk), and the hot beverage (coffee) was measured at 70º C. Statistical analysis showed that all factors interacted with one another, meaning that the viscosity of a nectar- or honey-like liquid varies greatly depending on the type of thickening agent and beverage combination in relation to the amount of time its thickens. Simply Thick, the gum-based thickener, typically produced samples that were the least viscous but they maintained a more consistent level of thickness over time. Serving temperature results are contrasted with viscosity measurements collected at room temperature, showing variable thickening patterns especially related to the type of thickening agent

Energy Saving Opportunities and Value of Information: A Trade-off in a Production Line

    No full text
AbstractA general framework for switching the machine off/on has been recently proposed in literature for single machines. However, the amount of information available along the production system is often limited and it might be not trivial to understand which information provides more benefits. This paper studies the performance of a production line when several control policies are applied at machine level. The amount of information at machine level varies and the trade-off with energy reduction is investigated. The considered performance measures are the energy consumed per part and the system throughput. Numerical results are based on discrete event simulation

    No full text
This article is intended to provide an answer to the following questions: Who was the Coptic-Orthodox father Matta Al-Miskīn (1919-2006) and what were his theories and his most important ideas? In order to offer a detailed answer to these questions, and to introduce succinctly the author who is considered —rightly— one of the Coptic-Orthodox theology leading representatives of the 20th century, same as one of key-figures of the Arab Christianity, today. The proposed structure has two main parts, an introduction and some final remarks. Firstly, a brief account of the life of the Coptic-Orthodox theologian is described, as well as a general presentation of his writings. Secondly, a synthesis of his spiritual, monastic-mystical, biblical, patristic and dogmatic-theological thought is proposed.
