The Danish Muhammad Cartoon Conflict

No full text
The “Muhammad crisis,” the “Muhammad Cartoon Crisis,” or “The Jyllands-Posten Crisis” are three different headings used for the global, violent reactions that broke out in early 2006. The cartoon crisis was triggered by the publication of 12 cartoons in the largest Danish daily newspaper Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten on 30 September 2005 and the Danish governments refusal to meet with 11 concerned ambassadors. However, Jyllands-Posten’s record on covering Islam; the ever growing restrictive identity politics and migration policies and the popular association of Islam with terrorism made it predictable that something drastic would eventually happen, although neither the form of the counter-reaction or the stubborn anti-Islamic forces were unknown. This collection of chapters seeks to fill out some of the most glaring holes in the media coverage and academic treatment of the Muhammad cartoon story. It will do so by situating the conflict more firmly in its proper socio-historical context by drawing on the author’s basic research on the Danish news media’s coverage of ethnic and religious minorities since the mid 1990s. The author uses thick contextualization to analyze this very current theme in IMER studies, which has consequences for most immigrants of non-Western countries to the Nordic countries

Current study was performed to investigate the effect of i. breed, sex and age on body weight and morphometric measurement traits and ii. phenotypic correlation of morphometric measurement traits to body weight. Data on body weight and morphometric measurement traits i.e., live body weight, body length, wither height, pubic bone length, heart girth and chest width were collected from 792 individuals from seven goat breed of Punjab including five strains of Beetal breed; Barbari, Dera Din Pannah, Nachi, Teddi, Pahari and Pothwari. Body weight was measured in kilograms with the help of weighing balance and morphometric measurement traits were measured with measuring tape in centimeters (cm). Mixed Procedure with Restricted Maximum Likelihood methodology in SAS University Edition was used to investigate the effect of sex, breed and age on different body measurements of seven goat breeds under investigation. The findings revealed that sex had significant effect on body weight and morphometric measurement traits except for pubic bone length among all the studied goat breeds. There was also a significant effect of breed on body weight and body measurements. Beetal had a maximum adult weight (44.49±0.48 kg) followed by Nachi (37.45±2.32 kg), Daira Din Panah (37.24± 2.36 kg), Barbari (36.99±2.21 kg), Pothwari (34.25±2.67 kg), Teddi (23.52±1.55 kg) and Pahari (20.81±1.78 kg). A strong positive correlation of body weight with all morphometric measurements was observed i.e., to heart girth (0.895), to body length (0.833), to body height (0.789), to chest length (0.741) and to pubic bone length (0.664). It was concluded that variations in body measurements and body weight depended largely on age, sex and breed. The results from the current study might have possible implications in launching proper selection program for improving meat potential of native goat breeds. This article is published as Moaeen-ud-Din, Muhammad, Raja Danish Muner, Muhammad Sajjad Khan, and James M. POWER ALLOCATION ALGORITHM FOR MIMO BASED MULTI-HOP COOPERATIVE SENSOR NETWORK

Get PDF
Cooperative transmission is a new breed of wireless communication systems that enables the cooperating node in a wireless sensor network to share their radio resources by employing a distributed transmission and processing operation. This new technique offers substantial spatial diversity gains as the cooperating nodes help one another to send data over several independent paths to the destination node. In recent times, an extensive effort has been made to incorporate these systems in the future wireless networks like LTE (Long Term Evolution), IEEE 802.16j (Mobile Multi-hop Relay (MMR) Networks) and IEEE 802.16m (Mobile WiMAX Release 2 or WirelessMAN-Advanced). But, there are few technical issues which need to be addressed before this promising technique is integrated into future wireless networks. Among them, managing transmission power is a critical issue, which needs to be resolved to fully exploit the benefits of cooperative relaying. Optimal Power Allocation, is one such technique that optimally distributes the total transmission power between the source and relaying nodes thus saving a lot of power while maintaining the link quality. In the first part of the thesis, mathematical expressions of the received signals have been derived for different phases of cooperative transmission. Average-Bit-error-rate (ABER), has been taken as a performance metric to show the efficiency of cooperative relaying protocols. In the second part of this Chapter, a multi-hop framework has been presented for the power allocation algorithm with Amplify-and-Forward relaying protocol. The efficiency of the power allocation algorithm has been discussed with different scenarios i.e. First for a three node (2-Hop) wireless network configuration and then for a four node (3-Hop) wireless network configuration. The transmission scenarios (2-Hop and 3-Hop) have been further categorized into multiple cases on the basis of channel quality between source-to-destination, source-to-relay, relay-to-relay and relay-to-destination links.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format

The new year's festivals and the shrine of Ali Ibn Abi Talib Sy Mazar-I-Sharif, Afghanistan

This study examines the customs and origins of three spring festivals at the shrine of 'Ali b. Abi Talib, Mazar-i Sharif, Afghanistan; namely Nauroz, Janda Bala and Gul-i Surkh. Since these festivals are not part of the Islamic religious calendar, we seek to locate their origins in the pre-Islamic religions of Iran and record the contemporary traditions of these festivals. Since the festivals are assimilated to a shrine dedicated to the fourth Caliph of Sunni Islam, we examine the processes which gave rise to this juxtaposition and how it came about that this shrine came to be considered a rival to Najaf. The Sa1juq and Timurid discovery narratives are examined (Chapters 1-2) in their wider religious and cultural context, followed by an examination of Afghan folklore related to Nauroz and the pre-Islamic religious traditions of Bactria (Chapters 3-4). We conclude that an important impetus for the founding of this shrine is the fact that, until the arrival of Islam, Bactra had been the paramount pilgrimage and cult centre of the region. Over the millennia, whilst the dominant religious tradition had changed, Bactra adapted to such ideological fluctuations in order to maintain its dominance of the. lucrative pilgrimage traffic. Marginalised by Islam, whose heroes and foci of pilgrimage lay in the Arab world, the alleged discovery of the body of Hazrat 'Ali at the site, provided an acceptable Islamic framework for the revival, or continuation, of indigenous Bactrian New Year customs. Our examination of Gul-i Surkh, or 'Red Rose', festival (chapters 5-6) finds a parallel in the Annenian Vardavar festival. Originally this festival appears to have been derived from a blending of Iranian and Babylonian religion in Bactria, namely the cults of Anahita, Adonistrammuz and custoins associated with the Iranian hero, Siyawush. Janda Bala (Chapter 7), on the other hand, appears to be rooted in ancient Vedic and Shamanistic tradition. All three festivals, though, we argue, also represent different aspects of ancient Indo-Aryan and Babylonian fertility rites connected with the spring and vernal equinox

This paper sheds light on the clash between the native and the foreign cultures which fragmented their individual consciousness in the scrutinizing for their individual uniformity. The current study is intended to investigate the tacit confidence in diaspora deterritorilization and its aftermaths in Pakistani literature. Modernism tried to delve into fundamental facts but did not succeed to oppose apprehensions and lawlessness of that era by giving birth to contrary postmodernism. Postmodernism has promoted personal emancipation in form of an individuality. This individuality has given rise to personal identification through confronting identity crisis created by modernism through working of societal, religious, political and socio-cultural positions. Personal identity formation corresponds to functioning of these societal by corresponding another issue of same coin of identity crisis. This research sheds light on internal turmoil of individuals which they have to face while living away from their native land. This study has tried to analyze the functioning of these positions behind the enfeeblement of identity in post-modernism through the textual analysis of the central characters in these novels The Runaways by Fatima Bhutto, Cities of Spies by Surraya khan, Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie and Maps for lost Lovers by Nadeem Aslam. This paper has used theoretical ideas of Bhabha, Dunn and Hall to assist critical formation of ideas. The findings of this study indicate that identity crisis is the most significant issue in all these novels and their protagonists undergo through this procedure
