"(D)ie alte Eva, die niemals auch aus dem neuesten Weibe auszutreiben ist" : An analysis of the female characters in Maria Janitscheks : Die neue Eva

    No full text
This diploma thesis deals with the female characters in Maria Janitschek‘s volume of novellas 'Die neue Eva'. The introductory chapter focuses on the historical and literary context and therefore discusses womens position in society, the womens rights movement and the image of women in literature at the beginning of the 20th century. An overview of Maria Janitschek‘s life and art and an examination of the publication history and reception of her book, which was published in 1902 and forbidden in Germany in 1909, precede the analytical part of the thesis. Due to her unreserved depiction of female sexuality Maria Janitschek made a name for herself as a daring author during her lifetime. Nevertheless, she cannot be classified as a feminist writer due to her ambivalent position on the womens rights movement. In 'Die neue Eva' Maria Janitschek creates female characters who conform to traditional as well as progressive concepts of femininity and illustrate the cultural, social and scientific influences of their time. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the depicted female characters with regards to these influences and to show which gender stereotypes, societal norms and moral conceptions shape their thoughts and actions.vorgelegt von Lisa FrikasesAbweichender Titel laut Übersetzung des Verfassers/der VerfasserinDiplomarbeit Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz 2021 3.167Zusammenfassungen auf Deutsch und Englisc

Harley Quinn in transition. Between male gaze and emancipation: A visual comparison of the portrayal of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad (2016) and Birds of Prey (2020)

The challenges female directors encounter in establishing themselves within the Hollywood film industry persist. This study will explore whether female directors influence the representation of female characters, leading to more diverse portrayals. The focus of this work is on the film and comic character Harley Quinn, who has been portrayed in various films directed by both men and women. The following research question is posed: “How is Harley Quinn portrayed in Suicide Squad (2016) by David Ayer and in Birds of Prey (2020) by Cathy Yan, and what differences can be deduced from this?” A comparative analysis will be used to evaluate how aesthetics, character development and staging change under the influence of female directors. In addition, existing studies on the diversity and representation of women in visual media will be consulted, with a focus on the frequent sexualization of female characters and its effects on the perception of gender roles. The studies show that female directors contribute to making female roles multilayered and complex. However, as the scope of the study was limited to one film directed by a male and one by a female director, it is not possible to make any general statement. Analysis of further films by female and male directors would therefore be valuable in order to recognize possible (positive) tendencies in the representation of women.

    Author Profiling in the Wild

In this paper, we use machine learning for profiling authors of online textual media. We are interested in determining the gender and age of an author. We use two different approaches, one where the features are learned from raw data and one where features are manually extracted. We are interested in understanding how well author profiling works in the wild and therefore we have tested our models on different domains than they are trained on. Our results show that applying models to a different domain then they were trained on significantly decreases the performance of the models. The results show that more efforts need to be put into making models domain independent if techniques such as author profiling should be used operationally, for example by training on many different datasets and by using domain independent features.</p

Challenging Male Hegemony: A Case History of Women's Experiences in British and US Higher Education, 1970-2002

This thesis is located within the discipline of history, and centres around the experiences of women in US and British universities. Higher education in both the US and the UK, as throughout the world, has historically been male-led and male-controlled. This male hegemony of higher education continues to the present, as evidenced by the low percentage of women in the upper echelons of academia (for example, professors). Women in the US and the UK have been challenging this male hegemony since their admittance to higher education institutions in the nineteenth century. They faced fierce opposition in their efforts to open higher education to women. This opposition was later echoed in the resistance to twentieth-century feminists' efforts to found women's studies programmes. The male hegemony of higher education is evident in the case histories of the experiences of women at Appalachian State University (ASU) and the University of Gloucestershire (UG) in the latter part of the twentieth century. ASU and UG, although located in different countries, have similarities which make a comparison interesting. The male hegemony of the institutions, and women's challenges to it, is especially illustrated when analysing three areas: residence hall life (living), staff issues (working), and the women's studies programmes (teaching and learning). Women students at both institutions experienced, and successfully challenged, strict residence rules through the 1960s. National influences, such as the change in the age of majority, and pressure from the students themselves brought a loosening of these rules in the 1970s and 1980s. The conservative nature of the institutions also influenced the experience of women academic staff. Institutional management was not proactive regarding women's issues, and there is strong evidence of a `glass ceiling' at both institutions. The male hegemony of the institutions was also illustrated in the struggle to found and maintain women's studies programmes

The flip side of the coin: Influencing factors of social media consumption on consumer well-being in the sportswear industry

The usage of social media is increasing. At the same time, the number of mental health issues is increasing as well. Recent studies discuss the relationship between social media consumption and consumer well-being (CWB) and found resulting problems like depression, feelings of loneliness, lower self-esteem and decreased levels of well-being. The objective of this study is to explore the influence of social media consumption on CWB, investigate the influence of model size and the impact of CWB on purchase intentions. To collect data an online survey was conducted. For the data analysis 222 survey responses from female respondents between 18 and 35 years were used. Data analysis was conducted with PLS-SEM. Resulting from the study, no influence of social media consumption (SMC) on CWB was found. However, materialistic values (MV) and social comparison (SC) have an impact on CWB. In turn, CWB has a negative impact on purchase intentions (PI).Author Lisa Keplinger, BSc.Masterarbeit Universität Linz 202

Taking Comedy Seriously: Humour in Lisa McGee's Girls and Dolls

    No full text
Laughter in the midst of tragedy can be one of life's most disturbing, cathartic and enlightening experiences, a maxim experienced in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, one of the most painful periods of Irish history. Northern Irish playwrights were acutely aware of this when dealing with violence in their plays and so, however grim the events they depicted, the comic element was very much present. After the Good Friday Agreement, along with the change in the political situation in Northern Ireland, there was a generational change in the theatre. What seems to characterise this new wave is the ironic distance taken towards the sectarian divide and the consequences of the conflict on Northern Irish society, which is revealed above all in their use of humour. Lisa McGee, one of the most important representatives of the new generation thanks to the popularity of her television series Derry Girls, had already shown her maturity in her 2006 play Girls and Dolls, performed by Tinderbox the same year. McGee mixes the tragic and the comic to present the terrible consequences of childhood trauma alongside the violence of the late Troubles, while raising questions about guilt, the meaning of friendship and the subtle ways in which violence affects us. This article aims to analyse the different uses of humour employed by McGee to deal with tragic episodes and their theatrical effect, drawing on the existing research on humour in literature and McGee's own observations given in an interview with the author on 3 March 2023

    Ricardo Reis, poeta engajado

Traditionally, the poet Fernando Pessoa is seen by the critics as an author whose works privilege subjectivity instead of social matter. However, the philosopher Theodor Adorno alerts us that even the most pure poetry could be analyzed from a materialistic point of view. In this article, we would like to apply such form of thinking to de Odes of Ricardo Reis, basing our analysis also in the concept of Literary Field, by Pierre Bourdieu.
