Newton's Laws
Authored and curated by David P. Stern, this series of web pages, part of "From Stargazers to Starships," describes Newton's three laws of motion and the two concepts on which they are based, force and inertia. The author breaks down the page in this fashion: the concept of force, motion against outside resistance, and motion with significant resistance. The author also provides additional links for further study on the life of Issac Newton. A lesson plan for instructors is also provided
Outcome of Microlaryngeal Surgery for Vocal Fold Polyp on Quality of Voice
ABSTRACT
Aim
To study the outcome of microlaryngeal surgery for vocal fold polyp on quality of voice with voice handicap index-10 (VHI-10).
Objective
Microlaryngeal surgery for vocal fold polyp will improve the quality of voice.
Materials and methods
This is a nonrandomized prospective study with a quasi-experimental design. A total of 36 patients presenting with vocal cord polyp and who underwent a microlaryngeal surgery for the same from March 2016 to August 2016 were included in the study. All the patients were given a self-reporting questionnaire consisting of 10 questions — VHI-10 — and asked to score it. The same questionnaire was given 6 weeks postmicrolaryngeal surgery to these patients and both scores were compared.
Results
The mean age of the study population was 44.67 ± 0.34 with the maximum number of patients in the age group 31 to 50. Out of the 36 patients, 27 were males and 9 females. A total of 22 (61%) patients had right-sided polyp and 14 (39%) had left-sided polyp. The majority of the patients were voice professionals, with the maximum number being that of teachers. The mean preoperative and postoperative VHI-10 was 30.36 ± 6.42 and 1.11 ± 1.76 respectively. The reduction in preoperative and postoperative scores gave a p-value of <0.05 at a confidence interval of 95%.

Sexually dimorphic behavior, neuronal activity, and gene expression in Chd8-mutant mice
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are four times more common in males than in females, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We characterized sexually dimorphic changes in mice carrying a heterozygous mutation in Chd8 (Chd8+/N2373K) that was first identified in human CHD8 (Asn2373LysfsX2), a strong ASD-risk gene that encodes a chromatin remodeler. Notably, although male mutant mice displayed a range of abnormal behaviors during pup, juvenile, and adult stages, including enhanced mother-seeking ultrasonic vocalization, enhanced attachment to reunited mothers, and isolation-induced self-grooming, their female counterparts do not. This behavioral divergence was associated with sexually dimorphic changes in neuronal activity, synaptic transmission, and transcriptomic profiles. Specifically, female mice displayed suppressed baseline neuronal excitation, enhanced inhibitory synaptic transmission and neuronal firing, and increased expression of genes associated with extracellular vesicles and the extracellular matrix. Our results suggest that a human CHD8 mutation leads to sexually dimorphic changes ranging from transcription to behavior in mice. © 2018, The Author(s
Suitability of Killai backwaters for prawn farming-a preliminary micro level survey
Brackishwater areas have been given much importance for prawn farming. No information was
available on the Killai backwaters about factors like water quality, topography, contour, extent
of the area, tidal amplitude, seed potential and possibilities of flooding etc. Hence during 1982-'84
Klllai area was thoroughly surveyed on the above aspects and the results have been discussed in this
paper. From this it is inferred that a total area of about 155 ha is readily available for undertaking
both pond and pen culture in this backwater

Correlation Between School Well-Being and Self-Regulated Learning in Taman State Junior High School 2 Students.: Hubungan Antara School Well Being dan Self Regulated Learning pada Siswa SMPN 2 Taman
This research was conducted because of the phenomenon of the lack of self-regulated learning that the author encountered in junior high school students such as not having an independent study schedule at home, needing help from friends in doing assignments, not yet having further education targets. This study aims to determine the relationship between school well being and self-regulation learning in junior high school students. His research is a relational quantitative research. 270 research samples were taken from 1119 students based on the Issac & Michael table with a significance of 5%, and the sampling technique used proportinated stratified random sampling. Data collection was carried out using the scale of school well being and self regulated learning. Data analysis used simple regression statistical analysis with the JASP program. The results of the analysis show the correlation coefficient F = 44.954, p=0.001. This result means that the hypothesis is accepted, namely that there is a positive relationship between school well being and self-regulated learning in junior high school students.

A new sparse Gaussian elimination algorithm and the Niederreiter linear system for trinomials over F 2
An important factorization algorithm for polynomials over finite fields was developed by Niederreiter. The factorization problem is reduced to solving a linear system over the finite field in question, and the solutions are used to produce the complete factorization of the polynomial into irreducibles. One charactersistic feature of the linear system arising in the Niederreiter algorithm is the fact that, if the polynomial to be factorized is sparse, then so is the Niederreiter matrix associated with it. In this paper, we investigate the special case of factoring trinomials over the binary field. We develop a new algorithm for solving the linear system using sparse Gaussian elmination with the Markowitz ordering strategy. Implementing the new algorithm to solve the Niederreiter linear system for trinomials over F 2 suggests that, the system is not only initially sparse, but also preserves its sparsity throughout the Gaussian elimination phase. When used with other methods for extracting the irreducible factors using a basis for the solution set, the resulting algorithm provides a more memory efficient and sometimes faster sequential alternative for achieving high degree trinomial factorizations over F 2.Abu Salem F, 2004, LECT NOTES COMPUT SC, V3019, P217; Berlekamp E. Competitive strategies and barriers to achieving competitive advantage : a study of two Saudi Arabian industries.
This study focuses on how organisations achieve and sustain competitive
advantage and the possible barriers to this advantage. It first deals with a
theoretical framework by examining related literature on developing a better
understanding of competitive advantage and generic strategies, as well as the
important aspects that may affect a firm's achievement and the sustainability of
its competitive advantage. This study extends the strategic management
literature on competitive advantage and generic strategies mainly based on
Porter's (1980, 1985) work. In particular, instead of the two generic strategies
(differentiation and cost leadership) put forward by Porter, four competitive
strategies are developed. These are (1) price leadership, (2) low cost
differentiation, (3) imitation and (4) differentiation.
Barriers to competitive advantage are conceptionalised in terms of
"strategic coherence" model, which has three aspects. Competitive strategies
require internal consistency referred to as 'competitive coherence'. In addition,
'organisational coherence' needs to be built, involving the structure of internal
and external elements affecting an organisation's ability to achieve its
competitive advantage. The creation of this structure is not automatic. The
difficulties increase with growing dynamism and complexity of the environment
in which an organisation is operating. While competitive and organisational
coherence might exist accidentally, the third aspect developed in this study is
called 'cognitive coherence'. The lack of coherence in one or more of these
aspects is a barrier to a firm achieving and sustaining its competitive advantage.
Secondly, this study reports empirical evidence on the validity of the theoretical
framework. This study takes the case of two different industries (petrochemical
and food) in Saudi Arabia.
Results indicate that all four competitive strategies are possible and
statistically defined. In addition, high-performing firms, in both industries, have
more strategic coherence than lower performing firms. The results suggest that
high-performing firms are able not only to achieve their competitive advantage
but also to sustain it over time. Moreover, in each industry, firms with different
competitive strategies have different barriers to achieving their competitive
advantage. These results are consistent with those found in the existing
literature, lending support to the view that western strategy models seem to be
applicable to developing countries such as Saudi Arabia
