Strategic Reforms for Accelerated Agricultural Growth in Pakistan
Agricultural growth rates in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s show that strong growth during the 1960s was driven by several factors, including greater certainty in the use of irrigation water (as a result of an agreement with India), the introduction of productivityenhancing fertiliser-seed packages, the introduction of tubewells and the electrification of rural areas, and policy changes that improved the profitability of farming. Growth during the 1970s dropped to 2.3 percent as a result of the uncertainty created by land reforms in 1972 and 1977, severe climatic shocks, a cotton virus that depressed production for most of the decade, and political instability. The recovery in the 1980s and early 1990s can be attributed to the introduction of new cotton varieties and improved management techniques, as well as to a gradual improvement in economic incentives. Closer inspection of the nature and sources of this growth raises concerns about its sustainability and casts doubt on the ability of the sector to grow by more than 3–4 percent a year in the future. Many of the past sources of agricultural growth in Pakistan appear to have been fully exploited. Strategy for the future must effectively address the followings. Allowing the market to Operate, policy reforms that support the ongoing structural adjustment should be given top priority. To address the crisis in irrigation management market-determined incentives must be allowed to determine resource allocation within the irrigation system. Reform in extension should include establishing closer links with research institutions and reducing the number of front-line extension workers and replacing them with fewer, bettertrained workers who are more responsive to the needs of farming systems. Full-fledged land reform is difficult to enact and can be considered only after a comprehensive study of costs and benefits. Some important measures can be implemented immediately, however. Foremost is providing security of tenure to many farmers, especially tenants-at-will, thereby improving responsiveness to incentives and creating better incentives for long-term investments.
Nationalism in Iraq 1936-1941: Rashid Ali and foreign involvement
The present work is a study of the background to the Rashid Ali movement of 1941, and the influence of Arab nationalism, as well as the British, French, and Axis involvement in the events leading up to 1941. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the pan-Arab nationalists in Iraq during the war years on the one hand, and Britain and the Axis Powers, on the other. Because it is intended mainly to examine the strategies and policies of Britain, Germany and Italy in relation to a particular area, this thesis is not concerned with the details of military operations - whether in Europe, the Western Desert, or in Iraq itself - except where they are immediately relevant to the subject under examination. This thesis sets out to discus_s four major issues: Firstly, the repercussions of the developments brought about by the complex and often ambiguous clauses of the post-World War I peace settlements, and their impact on the Arab Middle East, the Arab national movement, and on the machinery of government in Iraq, Britain granted independence to Iraq in 1932, but it was an independence hedged with a binding treaty which virtually preserved British interests in an area which traditionally was her "sphere of influence". This unnatural status not only gave rise to a revival of nationalist feelings, but in fact encouraged corrupt politicians to involve the army in politics. A second issue to be investigated is the struggle between the nationalist and the moderate elements over the course, or policy, the country should pursue vis-a-vis Iraq's commitments with Britain. This period is best characterized by the recurrence of the coup d'etat as a determining factor in government changes. The third issue is the Iraqi nationalist reaction to the division of Europe into two warring blocs, and Hitler's impressive victories. It also concerns the Axis overtures and propaganda efforts to woo the Arabs in order to undermine Britain's position and prestige in the Arab Middle East. The final issue to be analysed is the series of Axis-Iraqi initiatives to pave the way for a mutually profitable collaboration. However, there were several obstacles to be surmounted, such as Germany's Italian and Vichy considerations, Hitler's own disinclination to be involved in an Arab venture, and his pessimism regarding a successful outcome of such an alliance. Furthermore, Churchill was zealously determined both to offset and prevent a German penetration into the Middle East, and to nip Rashid Ali's open confrontation in the bud

ENT 600 : The X-Beast Dumbbell : new product development / Mohammad Amirul Rashid Jamil
Technology involves year by year with the innovation made by the human that covers nearly every area of human activity in everyday life. Sports and entertainment also get the indirect effect from the evolution of technology. From basic fitness equipment such as dumbbell to the advanced workout machines in the gym, research and development processes are under way to create more efficient product that can fulfil buyer's needs. My firm has invented a new type of dumbbell calling as The X-Beast Dumbbell. This dumbbell is ergonomic so this dumbbell should be used to work out and perform the aerobics. Some problem occurs when I want to invent my product such as suitable material that needs to be use and competition in the market of dumbbells with other brand. There are also some limitations that need to be considering like capital to R&D, shell life of the product, as well as lack of idea for new fixtures. Under new product development, research and development program is done with some idea generation, idea screening, and market survey to produce better product. Sketching of the product is important to project some image about how the product might look like with some verbal description. The prototype will be built according to the sketching of the product. Test marketing has been conducted to gather some feedback from various backgrounds of respondent
Pakistan: Breaking out of stagflation into sustained growth
This paper proposes that the underlying cause of the macroeconomic problems facing Pakistan today are a series of supply shocks which have constrained output growth. It is argued that while the current debate has solely focused on government expenditures and revenues, it is critical to also address the acute energy shortages which is constraining supply. The paper goes on to present four recommendations for breaking out of the present stagflation: (i) prudent macroeconomic management, (ii) reviving the role of the government in development while restoring fiscal balance, (iii) loosening monetary policy in order to spur the private sector, and (iv) improving social safety nets.Economic Growth, Supply Shock, Pakistan
